Day 70 (March 10, 2020 – 070)
Here we have a 1970 Baltimore Orioles player matchbook by Universal Match. I have a few matchbooks of the Oriole players, but don’t have all 24 in this set; may have to track them all down one day. The Brooks matchbook cover uses a familiar B&W photo of Brooks surrounded by an orange circle with Baltimore Orioles contained within the circle. I just picked up this small cutout picture of Brooks and Manny Sanguillen last week from the '71 Series and failed to post it within Day 71. I pictured the same shot of Brooks and Manny in post #612 that was used for a book "Baseball: How to Hit and Run".

I ran across this Orioles organization binder and thought I'd post now since we've been seeing awesome minor league items. As you can see on the inside is an Orioles sticker that states, "MINOR LEAGUE DEPARTMENT". Wonder what was inside back in the day...

Today we have an advertising photo of Brooks in a nice suit along with a model. Does this photo scream the 70’s or what?!? I love the background color used in this photo as well as just the overall look. I’m not 100% sure, but I believe this is a photo used to advertise Hamburgers (not the food) the retailing clothing chain. I recall a Hamburger store where my father used to shop located in the Charles Center. Hamburgers ultimately closed shop in the early 90’s. 1956 Columbus Foxes

Columbus, Georgia hosted the Orioles 1956 Class A affiliate in the South Atlantic League. The Foxes finished 79-61, but lost to Jacksonville in the championship. A few players ended up in Baltimore. Marv Breeding was the most productive. Lenny Green and Ray Barker also worked their way to the majors.

Also, I enjoy seeing pictures of players in Oriole jerseys wearing the number of a player that is remembered for wearing that jersey number. In this instance you have Fitzgerald wearing #19 and I just associate that number with McNally. I still haven't seen a picture of an Oriole, other than Brooks, wear #5 (except Frank for a photo when he first arrived in B'more). I know there were a few prior to Brooksie to do so. |

I thought I would contribute a few Oriole items to Mark’s thread. All are related to the 1971 Series. I picked up these ticket stubs from the original owner. I love the writing on them. They each tell a story. The green press pass is very cool because game 2 was a rain out and the rain drop stains reflect that it was there. The original Type 1 Brooks and Pops photo originated from the estate of the designer of those funky 1970s bullpen carts. A few years back I purchased a hundred slides from the James Drake collection. He covered the series for sports illustrated. These are a few shots he took of the Orioles. The Louisville Slugger black bats originate from the collection of James O’Toole who was the Assistant to GM Joe Brown. The snapshot of the Pittsburgh celebration is not original but it’s so 70s and tacky I love it nonetheless. The parking pass was a gift from Mark the author of this post. Thanks again Mark! I have posted the mint in box Clemente and Robinson Rawlings WSS Special Glove before. Its one of my favorite items so indulge me please. In 1972 The Bucs played the Orioles in what was billed as Game 8 of the 1971 World Series. The ticket sales went to Children's Hospital. Sorry Mark the Bucs won that one too. The stub and program are a tough find. You can’t have a 1971 Series post without The Great One . Here he is in all his glory as captured by James Drake’s camera.

Day 74 (March 14, 2020 – 074)
This Transogram advertising cardboard piece is from 1969 and features the American League players that were in the collector series of figures. As you can probably see they have Frank listed as Brooks and Brooks listed as Frank. Reminds me of a Frank quote: "I don't see why you reporters keep confusing Brooks (Robinson) and me. Can't you see that we wear different numbers." I remember those figures well as a kid. I didn't really care for them then and still have a hard time warming up to them. As an 11 year old, I was more interested in the cards on the back, so my boxes got all cut up and the figures didn't last the riggers of play. Knoxville, Tennessee was the home of the Orioles Class A affiliate in the South Atlantic League in 1957-58. Today, I'll focus on the 1957 team. They finished 81-73 and were managed by future O's coach George Staller.
The two program variations Attachment 389113 Attachment 389114 The Orioles farm system was becoming more productive, producing a bunch of players to play for the Orioles (some on the way up and some on the way down). The list includes Ray Barker, Fred Besana, Leo Burke, Angelo Dagres, Jack Fisher, Chuck Locke, Milt Pappas, Jim Pyburn and Willie Tasby. 1957 Stockton Ports

As most of you have noticed, I have put together a nice collection of Orioles minor league affiliate items. However, the most glaring holes in my minor league collection are the Stockton Ports. The Ports were affiliated with the Orioles from 1956-1971, except for a one year break in 1958 when they were a St Louis Cardinals affiliate. For some reason, Ports material just hasn't found it's way into the hobby in any quantity. I have a few items, but am always looking to add to it.
1956-1957 were interesting years for the Ports and I'll be discussing the 1957 team today. Mainly because I don't have anything from 1956. The Stockton Ports played in the California League and were a Class C affiliate. They finished a disappointing 61-79. While the 1956 team featured Ron Hansen, the 1957 team didn't produce any future O's. 1957 Program Attachment 389304 One of the most interesting facts is mentioned in their program. While most teams have a major league working agreement, the Ports actually had an agreement with the Orioles AAA team, the Vancouver Mounties. Earl Weaver's hand written scouting reports (on Index Cards; stored in a simple metal filing box) for every A.L. player from his last season of 1986 ..Earl was very much ahead of his time when it came to using stats for pitching match-ups, defensive positioning, pinch-hitting, etc.

1960-61 Leesburg Orioles

In 1960 and 1961, Leesburg Florida was the home of the Orioles Class D affiliate in the Florida State League. Neither team was very successful on the field, but did produce a couple future major leaguers.
The 1960 Leesburg Orioles finished with a record of 53-80 in front of an average crowd of 249 fans. Sam Bowens is the only player from that team to play in Baltimore. 1960 Program Attachment 389443 Attachment 389448 If you think attendance in 1960 was poor, the 1961 Orioles averaged 156 fans, finishing with a record of 56-80. The Orioles went through three managers that year, including Billy DeMars and future Orioles coaches, Ray Scarborough and player/manager, Cal Ripken Sr. Future Oriole and no hit pitcher Tom Phoebus pitched to a 1-12 record. 1961 Program Attachment 389444 Attachment 389445 Attachment 389446 Attachment 389447 With such poor attendance figures, I feel very lucky to have found programs from both years. |

Day 77 (March 17, 2020 – 077)
This piece is still in the factory seal, so I haven’t watched it. It’s an ESPN The Legends of Baseball VHS tape from 1996 narrated by Roy Firestone. There’s another VHS tape with a slightly different setup on the front, but I figure one’s enough. Attachment 389540 I think it’s such a cool color action shot from an away game of Brooks used on the VHS tape, but it’s small compared to Aaron. 1961 Tri City Atoms/Braves

As we work our way through the Orioles minor league affiliates, today's post discusses the 1961 Tri City Atoms/Braves. Tri-City played in the Northwest League as a Class B affiliate and represented the cities of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland Washington. They finished a dismal 49-90 in front of an average of 544 fans.
Gordon Sundin and Steve Dalkowski both appeared for the team. Sundin appeared in one game for the Orioles in 1956, while Dalkowski could never find the strike zone enough to live up to the hype his fastball created. Very nice card. When I was young my dad would talk about Raymond Berry often and was his favorite receiver. He always said that Johnny U wouldn't have been the same without Berry. He became a favorite of mine due to my dad's influence. When we lived in MD a lot of the Colts current players used to work for the same company in the off season that my father did and some were employed after their retirement. He met and traveled with a number of Colt players during this time. He brought me autographs home quite often. I'm unsure what I did with all of the signed pieces I was given, but in several moves and years later I have no idea what happened to them. |

Day 78 (March 18, 2020 – 078)
Today we have a few publications, which were high quality in my view, from 1993. The first was a newsstand edition from July/August of 1993 with nice artwork of Brooks on the cover. Attachment 389663 Next was a 1993 July/August Hobby Edition with again with nice cover artwork of Brooks. Attachment 389664 Thought this was a little odd, but this is a Goal Line Art mail out for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Art Series. The mailed sheet is a price guide for the HOF Art Series. 1961 Little Rock Travelers

The Orioles Class AA affiliate in 1961 was located in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Travelers played in the Southern Association and finished with a record of 80-73. Compared to a few of the other O's affiliates, the Travelers played to a huge average crowd of 1,782.
The team featured a bunch of names that should be familiar to most die hard O's fans. Some played for the Orioles themselves and a few made their name for other teams. These included Cal Ripken Sr, Pat Gillick and Bo Belinsky, Jim Fridley and Bob Nelson.
