Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
No, Barry, no one can pitch at Coors. In the end, the Pods bullpen has to outlast the Rockies', right?

Posted By: Bob
Wow. 9-8 in 13 innings. I was pulling for the Rockies but Matt Holliday still hasn't touched home. Barrett used a text book leg block but the ump blew it. Sorry Padres fans.

Posted By: Fred C
Bob,

That was a very poor call. The ump delayed the call and probably for good reason. His first instinct was to not make a call then all of a sudden - SAFE. I still think that Colorado was on the way to winning that game but we'll never know - it's baseball... It was a pathetic way to get into the playoffs but hey, they're there.

Posted By: Howard
What an awful throw from Giles! He threw it like a high arc softball pitch. Had he thrown a flatter ball Holliday would have been out by a mile instead of leaving the seemingly random call to the umpire.

I think the Atkins double was miscalled also. The Padres should have had another run.

Howard

Posted By: dennis
it was late, the ump was tired,he wanted to go home. what a lackluster call to say the least, but the way hofman was throwing it was only a matter of another batter or so for colorado to end it. trevor hofman is the relief version of tom glavine....maybe it's time they both hung up the spikes.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
Well I went back and forth on who I was for in that game... Peavy is a good pitcher, I wanted him to do well. Helton is a thoughtful hitter, it is a joy to watch him at the plate. Torrealba has worked his way to where he is, I liked him doing well. And Giles is a solid ballplayer... So I was back and forth.

I truthfully think that Atkins' 7th inning hit to left-center was over the yellow, and that it bounced off of the top edge of the chair. I think there's no way it bounces back onto the field with such velocity if it hit that padding, and if it hit some top edge of the rail it would not have bounced back toward the field at that angle. The Rockies should have had a home run on that.

It would have been a perverse twist on baseball lore for Holliday to go 0 for 6 instead of 2 for 6, and for Chipper Jones to have won the batting title that way. But that didn't happen.

And finally, Holliday did not touch the plate in the 13th. By then I was ready for the Rockies to have a great, comeback win. I'd been thinking in the 12th how the game needed an inside the park home run, since it had about everything else. Seems like folks kept getting leadoff runners on... But Holliday was blocked off of the plate, and he knew it. If you see a replay, watch... not the plate, but his face. He slides by, Barrett drops the ball, Holliday lays there, Barrett retrieves the ball and tags him, then Holliday writhes with frustration knowing he's been tagged out. I saw Holliday miss the plate and get tagged, I knew he was out. Holliday knew it, too.

Still, I'm all for the umpires calling the game. They get so many calls correct. Even ones that might seem close to us, they get right.

A great evening of baseball, all in all. but TBS seemed to have few graphics showing the players' names and stats. They did have the scorecard thing, and while I don't exactly use their scoring system, it was neat to see what a player had done. (At this moment, I must tell everyone to read The Joy of Keeping Score, by Paul Dickson.) I could have done with a bit better graphics, and less of a flashy, multi-light set that seemed better suited for half pipe announcers than for Cal Ripken. That set was nuts.

I just wish Clint Barmes had gotten to play...

Posted By: peter chao
It's tough for the fans to get too mad with Trevor Hoffman. The guy's a pro through and through, probably worn out from overuse but says he has no excuses and takes responsibility for the loss when there are so many other teammates that he could have pointed a finger at.

Peter C.

Posted By: Eric Brehm
I was at Coors Field last night and it certainly was a roller coaster of emotion throughout the long tense game, which ultimately came out favorably for the Rockies. Yet another do-or-die situation where the Rockies found a way to prevail during their remarkable surge down the stretch this season. Got a little help from the Brewers too to keep the Padres within reach.

I couldn't see the Atkins home run (or double as it turned out) or the Holliday winning run clearly from where I was, but the umpires called what they did, it is part of the game.

In any case, we're more than happy in Colorado to have our own team to root for in the postseason this year.
Posted By: Bob
Is it just me or is the only team (if you are not a hometwon fan) in the NL playoffs which is interesting enough to watch the Rockies? In the AL the Yanks, Bosox and Injuns are all interesting. The Cubs, DBacks, Phillies and Angels just don't capture my interest.

Posted By: Tony Andrea
Tbob -
Well as much as I hate to admit it being a D-Back fan your right.
The Rockies came into the playoffs as the hottest team in the league
and are playing at a much higher level than any other NL club right now.
If they can continue to play at this pace, they will be tough to beat.
I will say this though, ain't no NL team beating the AL this year.
The top three teams in the AL would beat whichever team that were to come
out of the NL. Just to strong......

Tony

Posted By: Fred C
I'm a Padres fan but to be honest I didn't care if the Pads made the playoffs because they were a team being held together by duct tape and glue. They only had one regular OF and the replacements (especially Cameron's replacement in CF) were poor at best. Put a minor leaguer in and that's what you get, four misjudged balls and a poor short throw to home plate. It would have been sad to see the Pads go three and out against the Phillies. I'm happy for Helton. It's nice that a veteran like Helton will finally get his chance in the post season. You have to like the Rockies lineup, it's nice. Overall, I'd like to see the tribe or halos in for the AL. It'd be nice for Helton to score big in the post season but I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubbies (which I don't think is going to happen) or the Phillies in the WS.

Posted By: Bob
I guess I expected more from the Cubs and Phillies but then if you remember they played in the two worst divisions in all of baseball, the NL Central and NL East, I guess the results were predictable.

There hasn't been another lead-off hitter like him since Rickey. Come on Phillies, I'd like to see them go deeper into the playoffs.

Peter C.

Posted By: Marc S.
A seven year old boy was at the center of a New York City courtroom drama
yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of
him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge
initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and
regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest
degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more
than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge
then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said
that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate
family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life
among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to
propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child
welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the New York Yankees,
whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.
