Posted By: bcornell
Jay -

You've issued more apologies in the last five years for Barry Bonds than even Barry himself, if that's possible. I'm convinced that unless he shoots up steroids in front of you, burns an American flag, takes candy from babies, and pledges allegiance to France that you're going to say he's good for baseball. The guy's an unparalleled jerk and, by the way, the Giants stink.

Back to cards...

Bill

A white Barry Bonds would be no more palatable than a black Barry Bonds.

Hank Aaron dealt with a lot more racial crap than Bonds could dream of. Bonds is just a nasty arrogant ugly person who is about to break an iconic record, the result of which will be that the record will no longer be iconic.

We do get to choose our icons.

Really.

second, Bonds was well on his way to being listed as an All Time Great. He never needed to enhance his game and hat size subsequently.

third, I agree with Al about how many baseball fans do not recognize todays players as better than MANY older players. With Ruth being the lone exception, my "all time" team would not include anyone prior to Jackie's time. That said, here it is ....

C - Bench
1B - Pujols (yes, that is correct)
2B - Rose (had to put him somewhere)
SS - Arod
3B - Schmidt
OF - Ruth, Mays, Bonds, Aaron, and Williams
P - Clemens, Carlton, Koufax, Spahn and Gibson

just my opinion, as baseball didn't really become AMERICAS SPORT until Jackie.

fourth, I can't stand Bonds

fifth, I have no idea how anyone could seriously root for him

sixth, I know he won't break it in Philly. Posted By: jay behrens
Let me make something clear, I am NOT an apologist for Bonds. What I am, is tired of the hypocrisy surrounding Bonds. People say he cheated. As has been pointed out, cheating has gone since the inception of the game. Get over it. I loved the Jax comparison. He did something far worse, took money to throw World Series games, yet most of you revere him as some sort of god.

I'll take a player that is trying to make himself better over a player that is throwing games. At least we know the games with the guys cheating to make themselves better are on the up and up.

I have no illusions about whether or not Bonds used performance enhancing drugs. He did, along with most of baseball, including Roger Clemens. The guy is a generally miserable person who almost no one likes. So what. I don't watch baseball, or any other sport for matter, for the athlete's personality. I watch sports to see these people perform.

Whether you like the guy or not, you cannot take away the accomplishments that he has. The playing field was as level as it could since Bonds was not the only one using enhancers. Everyone, including pitchers, was using.

Bonds is single greatest player any of us has had the luck to watch.

Yes, Bonds is a miserable, detestable person. Yes, Bonds used enhancers. So did everyone else, but no one else put the numbers that he did, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. You may never seen another hitter as good as Bonds for the rest of your life.

Jay

I love pinatas. You get to beat the crap of something and get rewarded with candy.

Posted By: Joann
I kind of hate to admit this, but here goes.

I really couldn't care less if he used steroids or not. If Barry Bonds got on TV today and said "Yep. Did it. Used a lot." it wouldn't make any difference to me one way or another. I know I'm missing something here b/c I'm way out of sync with almost the rest of the world, but if I knew for sure he did them (and I think I do) it really wouldn't bother me at all.

Not because everyone was doing it. Not because steroids don't help eye-hand coordination. Not because I think he's getting any kind of a raw deal. Just because the issue is kind of flat with me. It just doesn't bother me, and I'm not sure why it doesn't. I wouldn't give it a second thought except I can see that everyone else is so enraged by it that I wonder why the issue doesn't resonate with me at all, and what I'm missing. I really don't care if anyone used steroids.

With Bonds, it is amazing to watch some of the things he's done. Sometimes he only sees one strike in a game and hits it out.

I just got tickets to see the Giants play in Milwaukee July 22, and am excited to go. I don't think he'll break the record that soon - heck I'm not even sure he'll play. But it'd be cool if he played, cooler if he hit one out, and coolest if it were even close to the record.

I really want him to break the record. Maybe it's because for some reason - no reason in particular - I never really cared for Hank Aaron.

OK. I know I'm in for it after this post.

Joann

Posted By: E, Daniel
just wondering Joanne, did you similarly find it 'amazing' to watch Ben Johnson run after he was shown to be using steroids?
What about weightlifters who are continually banned after being outed? Does it seem 'quite' as amazing as over 500 pounds get pushed skywards?
How about the San Diego Chargers Shawn Merriman, who plays like a nutcase and is the best case of controlled roid rage I've ever seen..? Do you like his style?

I'm going to guess, but perhaps with Bonds its because the physique is nicely draped in loose uniform, and swinging a bat on the perfect plane to hit a ball appears a more evolved and 'pretty' motion'. Not requiring pure strength as much as pure timing and eagle eye.
Because, to be honest, I don't get your apathy either. Very respectfully.

All I know is that if my kid were trying to make a ball club, and he was good enough in natural gifts but didn't 'play the game' the pros maybe did to be a rock star, I sure would be bummed for him to be considered a lesser player. Me, I'd prefer he became a doctor, or an author, or......

Daniel

Nowhere else, mind you, but the locals still like him. Probably because they all figure they're going to catch No. 756.

Regarding steroids and their benefits; no, I don't think they help hand-eye coordination much but they can increase bat speed and that increases the distance the ball travels. I think the whole steroid thing is way overblown. I also don't really care who used steroids. In the world of drugs, I believe that what goes up must come down, and I can't believe any player benefits long-term from using steroids (see Ken Caminiti). Just as I don't believe the players dating back to the 1960s who popped greenies (a friendly term for speed) received any long-term benefits ...

Yes, Bonds is a cranky individual. Just notice how ARod is treated: he's a first ballot HOFer and is abused on a daily basis in the NY papers, booed by the home fans, etc. NY is the toughest place to play in the country with the greatest rewards. That's the way it's been for a very long time.

ARod has done in NY exactly what he has done his entire career -- and he only has gotten destroyed by the NY press.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
True, but there has been a finding that he took steroids.

I hate the guy..but not necessarily cause of the 'roids because I think many guys took them. I just think he's a lowlife.

Posted By: doug
not on roids. Im not saying Bonds didnt take steroids, it sounds like half of baseball was taking them at some point. But Barry was an amazing player when he was skinny and one of the best hitters of all time before he hit 73 dingers.....Now he is 43 years old and on pace to maybe hit 45 more this year. I dont like him as a person,. but the guy is one of the top 5 hitters of all time, period. How many MVPs has he won? Geez.....hes awesome and his bat speed was incredible when he was in college.

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
The 1994 strike was a big deal. The World Series was cancelled. Fans said F-unc this. Baseball ratings were down in subsequent years, which means that advertising revenues were down too. Something had to be done. And it was. MLB juiced the ball. HRs went up. In 1998 two players hit over 60 HRs. This is statistically essentially impossible.

But it didn't stop there.

Those two players went on to each average over 60 HRs for four consecutive seasons. (Let me check the statistical no-way machine) yep, the red light is flashing.

Lets see now. Ratings and revenues are up. Time to implement the cover up. Blame steroids.

It is believable, kinda. It allows players to become stronger (that is evil). Stronger players will hit more home runs. Maybe no body will notice that half of the 500 HR club consists of players <200 lbs.

I do not buy the "juice was in the players" explanation as the complete story. I do believe that a stronger athlete will hit more HRs than a weaker athlete. But I do not believe that steroids alone can yield four consecutive seasons totalling 240 or more HRs without juice in the ball or some other physical variable outside of the player, as the greater contributing factor.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Back in the day, quite a few days ago, I occasioned upon a beer bar which was pleasant, had a real pot belly stove for heat, free (very long) shuffleboard, free snacks and sandwiches (I said it was in the past). I guess that I went back there several times. Nobody ever asked the proprietor "Why don't you offer wine" because they knew the answer "this is a beer bar".

Nobody asked for whiskey, grape juice, watermellon, knishes, sauerbraten, kool-aid, etc. Do you know why?

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Back in the day, quite a few days ago, sometimes the teacher would sense the buildup of tension in the class and leave the room for a bit.

There would ensue relative chaos including the throwing of paper airplanes, spitballs and the associated pulling of pig tails and pony tails; mainly of the more attractive famales.

Upon the teacher's return, order was restored and everyone's blowing off of steam had the desired effect. At precisely that time, there would be the raised hand needing to be called upon. This person then would recite a verbal report of who did what while there was no supervision. I was never the hand raiser in this situation. My preferences were paper airplanes and pony tails.

Is that Dan's hand I see raised right now?

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Just pointing out the hypocrisy Gil. You wrote that statement 2 days ago and then the very next day you are talking about steroids and Barry Bonds. I personally don't care if people go off topic in this group because I think it does serve a purpose of community and friendship. Leon does a good job of reigning it in when it gets to be too much. So go ahead and have your fun, but please don't complain about someone else going off topic.

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
I have no intention of spoon feeding you explanations for each allegation you choose to conjure Dan. If you do not accept my explanation of Leon deliberately incorporating a single thread OT release for the maddening hoard, to maintain sanity, then either you haven't been paying attention, or I am incorrect. In any event, I will not entertain further challenges from you which are not clearly thought out.

Posted By: peter chao
Dan,

I agree with you a 100%. Just think if we didn't let Barry tell his Seinfield jokes we would never know that he watches reruns religiously. I already know you guys love prewar vintage. Tell me something new tell me what your other passions are.

How can you discuss baseball at all without discussing Bonds and the breaking of the most hallowed record in sports. How could this thread be O/T.

Peter

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Dan, I too regret making statements which could be construed as hostility.
I do not take any of this "verbal" posturing and skirmishing seriously tho. I find it an alternative form of fun. That is, until it is taken to heart.

I am only Gil, and I bring no sword here; but I do enjoy a debate, sparring match and other games which require thought, creativity and dynamics. Heck, I do not always even believe in the position which I accept. Sometimes it is just for the matching of wits, eventho I often only make it half way there.

Have fun!
