Posted By: Joann
1. Kyle - great idea. Not only helping a cause, but it will be neat (as you said to begin with) to see what the melting pot of N54 donations turns out to be. I'm in.

2. I suggest a 24 or 36 hour thread to vote for the charity, from 4 or 5 nominees that Leon and/or Kyle can pick from this thread. One person, one vote, any vote for a cause other than one of the nominees is cancelled, and NO using the thread to lobby or otherwise discuss the charities nominated. The poll is too easy to manipulate - remember how 60% of us or something were PSA 8 collectors? There have been several charities suggested that I think everyone could support, but each of us has our favorites within that handful. Even if we have just a short and limited vote, people will get a chance to try for their favorite but still likely support whichever cause ends up getting the most votes.

3. It's probably good that there is so little time - it will spur action. Having too much time might end up with people forgetting or loss of sense of urgency.

4. REA - wow. Good for them.

5. Funny - everyone suggested fairly neutral causes either by name or by generic descriptions of activity. Only one person started down the path of "neutral or slightly my way". How ego-centric. Wow. Whatever Trevor.

I'll send a card regardless - I'll support whatever charity is selected b/c I'm sure it will be good. A chance to vote would be nice too, but not really a show stopper for me.

Joann

Let the high bidder in the auction designate the charity of their own chosing. This would likely result in higher bids.

* If this is not to your liking, then as Joann suggests, have a poll. But, the only people who should participate in the poll are those that are donating something.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Agreed, Barry. Instead of just blathering on about the Right Way, Kopp took matters into his own hand -- and saved countless millions!

Runner-up charity organization: Ted Haggard Charity for the Re-Education of Homosexuals. Again, this is a very worthwhile charity that seeks to eliminate the bad behavior of homosexuality through a 20 day, intensive counseling program. A lifetime of closeted homosexual behavior can simply be ELIMINATED with deep prayer -- but they need money to keep it going. Only PSA 8 charity slabs will do.

Clearly, these organizations will do more for the greater good then, let's say, that silly cancer research.

Charity Auction - The Painted Turtle $6000! 20 mins left!

Posted By: Rhys
As a very longtime forum member who just barely read this thread, I would like to suggest a very worthwhile, and COMPLETELY neutral Charity idea for at least some serious consideration.

The High School in my hometown of Middleton Idaho was completely destroyed by fire last week. It made the National news for a day or so, but the scene is horrible and looks like the aftermath of 911. There are over 600 high school students with no books, no musical instruments, no teachers files, no gym equipment, nothing. They are now seperating up the kids to go to different churches and charity organizations while the town figures out something to do. People all over our community (15 miles from Boise Idaho) are trying to put together dinners and yardsales to help the kids out, but the need is extremely pressing to get these kids books and the basics to get back to normal. The band and orchestra for the school had all their instruments destroyed and most of the parents can not afford to buy new ones, and the school can not pay for it.

I am sure we could make a very significant difference to in a real way rather than donating money to a mega-charity where the money will be used well, but the results never seen. I would be willing to bet anything that the school would honor the donation in a way that would bring some positive attention to the forum and the hobby to people who may have never heard of it before.

If this is something you guys are not interested in supporting for a charity idea, I will respect that. But I cant think of anything more neutral in ideology than a public school in absolutely desperate need of charity.

Rhys Yeakley

Posted By: leon
As we have discussed privately you are doing a really nice thing here. However I would kindly ask that the questions about "are you sending something or not?" addressed to individuals be handled in private emails. No one should feel they are on the spot to donate...and I am sure you didn't mean it to be that way but when asking publicly it is sort of that way. So for those folks asked about donating....if you respond please do it privately to emails to Kyle....or not....it's everyone's own, personal choice....take care and best regards...
