4093 career hits!

Just picked up this beauty. A 102 year old card of Arnold "Jigger" Statz. He is one of only nine players known to have amassed at least 4,000 combined hits in the major and minor leagues. The others are: Pete Rose, Ty Cobb, Ichiro Suzuki, Hank Aaron, Minnie Miñoso, Julio Franco, Derek Jeter, and Stan Musial. Not bad company I think.

I have been slowly assembling a tobacco type set, and locating a clean T332 Helmar Stamp of any player has been quite the challenge. Imagine my surprise when I popped into my local card show and saw this one at William Chappell's table. Thanks again, William!

Not nearly as nice as Sam's recent pickup of the same card, but happy to add it to the backrun. 1 more known card to go which should be pretty easy.

Howe’s Hunter 11-16-2024 12:58 PM

And suddenly eight more …

Got a message from Bob Rice last Friday, saying he saw a bunch of Howe-stamped cards were being listed on eBay if I needed any of them. 20 minutes later, I’d purchased eight that I didn’t have.

Takes the list down to 105 possible cards that I would need to have each of the cards Howe might have had in a complete set. Of those, 13 are ones I missed when Scott Gross auctioned off the huge Goldin lot, and I know the owners of five of those. There are another five I know exist, and know the owners of three of those, but they are Cobbs, which will never fit my budget.

When I rethought the collection to go to one of each, I really never thought I’d get close to 400. Thanks to everyone here for letting me know when they see one.

For a D.C. guy, these are nothing less than astonishing. I had never even heard of the Washington Giants, much less seen pictures. Makes me wonder what kind of coverage they got in the black press of the day, if any. Feel free to decline to answer, but I'm curious what you paid for it. My old Hunt's password seems to have become defunct due to inactivity, I guess.

I really like Orange Border cards, and the Plank is a great looking example from the set. Congrats on the pickup. I cropped and resized the image to make your card look even more greatastically better.

I'm still struggling with the photo uploader. It won't let me upload files just take pictures directly

Speaker and Greenburg error

Picked up these two this month. Tough Speaker postcard and another Greenburg error. Looked nice and was pretty reasonable I thought so bought another copy of my favorite card.

It's definitely always cool to own something this rare

Will go to SGC but honestly I have no clue what the market would be these days. It seems like one of the nicer examples

Finally knocked off last HOF ................... :)

Attachment 641413

It only took me almost two years of collecting this set to realize Carey was his rookie card ......... :p

Sitting at 197 ...... ;)

Fun, fun, Scott

Yoda 11-21-2024 12:24 PM

And his RC, no less. Well done. Hooper is a real tough one. Love to see yours.

Nice job Scott. 197 T207 cards in less than two years is impressive. I think anything over 120 or so gets really tough to come by.

I have always liked the way the T207 artist(s) depicted wavy hair on many of the cards, including Carey's. Bresnahan comes to mind as another HOF with prominent wavy locks.

Not to high-jack a thread ...... :o ....... but by request .....

Attachment 641623

Two great examples of why, imo, T207s are a great set: Classic fielding poses, and some GREAT portraits .................. :)

Based on design, Hooper obviously comes with an Anon.3 back. That would be a card I'd like to have (one day ;)) as I am trying to get as many Recruit Anon.3s as possible.

Fun, fun, Scott

Some fun items at Hakes. I don't always keep track of their auctions, but glad I knew about this one. Absolutely psyched about the Hubbell. It's been on my wish list for years.

Not sure what back you're referring to, John. Hooper's now known with 5 backs, with 1 other possible:

Recruit Fac 240
Recruit Fac 606
Napoleon
Anon, Fac 3
blank

He could also be found with a brown-ink back, but that's unconfirmed at the present.

Here's the 5 known backs - the blank back images are from a recent CleanSweep auction - it is not my card.
