I really enjoy seeing these great cards [in pick-up threads] and where folks are focused.
Happy to add this "Buffinton" to my collection of significant others. Also updating my progress on the Mathews pickup a while back, as I have finally found someone to grade / holder it . . . me :) JMO = Just My Opinion Attachment 576054 Attachment 576053 |

Two Pairs

The winners of 3 and 2 games respectively in the 1903 World Series. My apologies to the estate of Denton Young for his image being a little blurry, but it was tough to get a raw and slabbed together.
Attachment 576435 I know this next pair isn't pre-war but I had to post my favorite broadcast team as I watched a lot of these guy on WPIX when growing up. Attachment 576436 |
And here's the winner of the other three games, also picked up this month.

I actually can't remember when I got my Bill Dinneen, but the Young is recent and I had to pair them. I work at Northeastern University in Boston and our campus is the site of the old Huntington Avenue Grounds where the Sox played before Fenway opened. There's a statue of Cy Young where the mound used to be. |
The thing about those big East Coast cities, it seems like one is always merely a few blocks away from some fascinating built-over history. I just wish there were more aerial images from before WWII.

Via Greg Morris I added these two Jacksonville Jays players (1910 T210 red borders). Now on the hunt for "Wahl" the last player I need for my team set.

I collect King Carl and I've always thought that 41 Goudey was a really nice card, Leon. I would like to collect the rainbow on that one (green, blue, red, yellow), but have to settle for now for just the greenie:

Fan Craze

I began down the rabbit hole of pre-war vintage a couple of years ago and I don't think I will ever get back to modern. I find the world of early cards, in particular pre-33 Goudey, incredibly fascinating....the strip cards, food product cards, game cards, exhibit cards, etc. etc.
I recently discovered Fan Craze. I absolutely love this set/game cards...the images of these greats are so striking, and the cards are so much more affordable then even their later cards, i.e. T206s. |

Some freshly graded Reyes cards

This was hardly a “stop the presses” acquisition, and was a wee bit cheaper than every other card in this thread, but I picked it up as an interesting oddity. It is likely the only anonymous player in the 1921 set.

Recently picked up this exhibits Simmons card. Very happy with it. I am just trying to gauge when it was manufactured. I read the very informative write up on these exhibits cards on this forum. If I understood it correctly, the cards in the first run were blank backs and the last runs had the language that the cards were not to be used in the exhibits machines along with the made in the USA language. Also, if I understood correctly, the age range is more like 1925-31. So this Simmons would likely be from the tail end of the date range? 1929-31?

Fabulous Jackie rookie Ethan.

Another good mail day for the Howe collection
2 Attachment(s)
Jim found these in a lot he win from Goldin. I knew of the Knight and Dahlen, as there had been examples of them from last September’s Goldin auction of the 975 Howe cards in one lot. Comparing scans to cards, the Knight is from that lot, but Dahlen is a different card. Willis is a new one, as there had been a batting version, but no portrait.
My gut tells me more and more Howe cards are going to show up in large card lots from Goldin. My guess is when the 6,000 card lot showed up for them last year, probably the 975 stamped cards they sold as one lot were all in one or two boxes together. As they are sorting and going through the other 5,000 plus cards, probably more Howe stamps will be found among them and be a part of larger lots. Howe may have been closer to a complete set than Scott and I thought after last September. Thanks to all who give me a heads up when you see one. |
Great pickups everyone!
Ben , Love that Ruth! Jeff, incredible rare rookie Ruth piece! Nice Marsans Leon! love the overprint/ bleed-through ink! Pete, Nice D381! That Dell used to be one of mine! |

Fortunate that many of these pickups come from board members Fortunate that I was able to move some of my non focus items to help get my focus items Now the Hardest part is to stay focused on my collection of Ruth and Jackson and not get distracted by other great players and their cards and memorablia For me that is the hardest part staying focused |
