In what is hopefully the last of my blue chip posts, here are two E254 Colgan cards of players who eventually became major league umpires (George Moriarty and Al Orth).

Thus the cards you are viewing in this post are Blue (umps in Colgan's) Chips.

Brian (these Blue Chips not mine)

The IBM of cards…

Rhotchkiss 11-12-2022 08:52 AM

Keeping in mind that this is the prewar (WWII) part of the forum, regarding blue chips, just take a look at the 25 highest priced lots in the REA auction ending tmrw: Cobb, Wagner, Young, Johnson, Mathewson, t206 and t205 rarities, and 1914 CJ HOFers. Enough said….

Regarding post WWII vintage, I have no doubt that Mantle, Mays, Robinson, Aaron, key 1952 topps cards, etc fit into the blue chip discussion as well. I just don’t play in that playground much and don’t know if the fact that these cards tend to be more available/common compared to cards from before 1940 makes a difference.

Jay Wolt 11-12-2022 08:55 AM

Aaron that's an awesome card!

I'll second that. Aaron, beautiful Cobb!

Thanks Tony & Jay. I paid as much for it (about 1 1/2 yrs ago) as I sold a ‘14 Cobb SGC 4 for a few years before. They just keep going up

Call me crazy, but isn’t this auction exclusively for pre-war items?

For pre-war items to be at the top of the list when they are the only ones on the list, well, the probability of such a result does seem to be strong.

Blue Chip

People are quick to use top tier “HOF” members as a reference to cover a swath of the great names…IMO, a few well known issues / cards featuring Joe Jackson are / should be considered at the blue chip level…despite his unfortunate HOF status.

This is quite possibly the most ridiculous post I have ever read on this site. BP is already factored in to the bids people make on cards at this level, or levels much lower. The unfortunate part is you are correct, these cards easily went for 20% less than they should have, if not more. But not because of the lack of BP on ebay. I had no idea that these were even up. I'm sure others missed them as well. They ended on the wrong day, a Monday, on the wrong site, and the day before an election.

Wow, people really stretching to find an answer to why they sold for less. You Forgot the full moon in the 7th house and Jupiter aligned with Mars. Literally one person missing it on Ebay, getting their rest to hit the ballot box.

Better just saying people finally arent bidding with probstein.

But yet again they still bid with pwcc in their own platfirm

I am referring to the players and the specific prewar sets, not prewar in general. I feel that was pretty obvious

Apparently I was oblivious to just how obvious it was.

Apparently.

Regular Issue No Oddball Best Centered Highest grade you can afford. That’s my best description of what I consider to be “Blue Chip”

I would add Ted Williams and Hank Aaron to your 5 you recommended and call them The Magnificent Seven.

Great stuff Pete. Can't have enough Ruth material. Love the T202 Cobbs. I regret selling mine years ago. Gotta get another one at some point.

Leon 11-16-2022 07:02 AM

Great looking, centered cards, Dean. Who wouldn't love to have any of those?
Cy is a good one because who hasn't heard of the Cy Young award!
