It is funny you mention that, because after reading your post I went and double checked my copy of that same matchbook. It is made by the same Diamond Match Co., just not part of any set. Nice item, and there are actually other different DiMaggio Restaurant matchbooks out there. His brother, Dom, also has at least one matchbook for his restaurant that was also in San Francisco. And all of them appear to have been made by the Diamond Match Co., which was out of the San Francisco/Chico, California area. So, no surprise the DiMaggios used them to make their matchbooks to advertise their restaurants since they were local.

Geez, the Omaha Bee-News, another one of these Sports Stamps newspapers I've never really heard of, and have never been able to find an example of for sale. Great info though, thanks for posting.

I hate to dredge up an old thread, but...I just bought an old scrapbook, from the year 1936, that according to what I can see from afar, has at least several Los Angeles Examiner baseball Sports Stamps, both loose and fixed. She be arriving this week. At the very least it appears to have "Goose" Goslin, Carl Hubbell, Gabby Hartnett, and Tony Lazzeri. There are others I can't identify, one is perhaps Jimmie Foxx.

Fantastic! That's the first Feller Sport Stamp I've seen. I actually purchased a 1936 Sporting News paper from the Feller estate that Bob kept all those years. When I received it, I frantically opened it hoping to find the Sport Stamp - No Luck! I thought it would have been so cool to have a 36 Sport Stamp of Feller that he actually owned and kept all those years. I still have the paper. He kept the paper in his desk all this time - unusual? - Who knows.

Here are a handful more from the Seattle PI, including a few PCL ones (Seattle Indians, Strange and Michael), Seattle Sea Hawks hockey coach and Hockey HOFer Frank Foyston, who was a key member of the 1917 Seattle Metropolitans...first US Stanley Cup champions.

Also a different Jesse Owens from Adam's LA Examiner stamp, Ott & Hornsby, and Max Schmeling for good measure.

Examiner, a great many All-Star Sportstamps. 4 are loose with clippings, never glued in. There are 60, all total. The scrapbook covers the 1936 season. I've got a ton of old scrapbooks. Never came across one like this.

The Sunday Advertiser was indeed the Sunday edition of the Boston American. Most of the newspapers on this list I recognize as part of William Randolph Hearst's publishing empire. He owned 28 major papers in 1935, and I suspect all or most Hearst papers included Sports Stamps in 1936.

Thanks! For once in my life in this hobby, I think this is a find! I can't see removing these Sportstamps from the scrapbook and ruining it. Somebody took a lot of time and effort to carefully put it together. Imagine how I almost went into shock over seeing Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Carl Hubbell, Charlie Gehringer, Dizzy Dean, and so many others. I have a full set of All-Star Sportstamps for 1936, I think. Wow!

gonefishin 08-04-2023 09:21 AM

Congrats James! That is a find for sure. Every once in a while a person deserves to get lucky.

Your scrapbook looks very comparable to the one I obtained. It must have been the way to put scrap books together in 1936.

I removed several of mine because I wanted to get the graded. They were pasted on the pages with a salt-like feeling substance and came off rather easily. I just had to massage them gently and they came loose. It also had every All Star in the book. In un-cut panels no less. I kind of wish I would have left it alone, but the Ruth and DiMaggio etc. sure look great in SGC holders!

Read the articles - they are fantastic also.

Congrats! Jim

But Wait! There's More...

Going through all the loose clippings in this scrapbook, about half the book is glued in, there's a huge amount of loose clippings. It's all very neatly trimmed, just never put in. Among all those clippings, 18 more loose Sportstamps...another Hubbell and Lazzeri, Charlie Ruffing, Lefty Gomez, Frankie Crosetti and a bunch of other Yankees and Giants. That brings it up to 78 Sportstamps, total.

Leon 08-07-2023 02:49 PM

That's the kind of scrapbook we all hope to find!
Congrats!

Thanks Leon. It means a lot to me, sir!

Do you think it is fair to say that, other than perhaps some of the special "ColorFotos", that these Sportstamps are the leading or most desirable newsprint items? It seems that clippings from newspapers just don't generate anywhere near the interest.

Your'e welcome. It's always fun to make small or large finds. (large ones are a little better)
I would say these stamps have generated a lot of interest over the last several years. And I guess they took off a little more when the TPG's started grading them. CGC told me, at the National, they will holder them but are still working on their larger holders.

No sir, out of 78 Sportstamps, no Hank Greenberg.

jingram058 08-10-2023 10:17 AM

As you all know, graded cards are not my thing. However, I reached out to SGC about this scrapbook as they are just "across the Alley", Alligator Alley, in Boca Raton. Pretty much what I expected to hear. Tyler said don't destroy the scrapbook trying to get Gehrig and DiMaggio out. Just leave it as is, and, if ever sold, sell it to someone knowledgeable of Sportstamps, and not in some generic eBay auction. The loose Yankees and Giants, however, would get a numerical grade if submitted, and they could be hand delivered, in person to SGC.

Needless to say, I won't destroy the scrapbook to get any of them out.

The scrapbook is in amazing condition, and the stamps in it are perfectly trimmed. There's a wealth of other stuff from the baseball season of 1936 in it, all newspaper clippings, but obviously the Sport Stamps are what make it desirable.

The loose stamps are perfect also.

I'm not much on grading when it comes to cards, but this is different. I reached out to SGC over in Boca Raton, and they actually emailed and then called me. I was told I could hand-deliver the loose stamps for grading/encapsulation if I should choose to do so. I was also told that the scrapbook is most certainly valuable, and please, don't destroy it trying to get certain stamps out of it.

insidethewrapper 11-07-2023 06:26 PM

Thanks Jim, I added a few to my checklist . I now have over 800 Sport Stamps documented from the various newspapers. I'm sure more newspapers will continue to surface since I only found the San Francisco Examiner a week ago. If anyone can help with this project contact me . Thanks

Jason, thanks for the listing. I will catalog my stamps and post them in the near future. I have several but haven't taken the time to sort through them.

Jason: Thanks very much. I have increased the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph checklist from 156 to 213 by adding 57 new subjects from your listing. I now have 914 total stamps on my checklist covering several newspapers. I hope others can add to this list. Also looking to add additional papers from 1936

Jason, could you or someone please instruct me how to copy my excel sheet into the thread without losing the format? I've been trying and have given up. Of course, its garbled when I simply copy and paste. Thanks. Jim

One way is to do a screen cap and save as a jpg. If it's a long spreadsheet, you just have to scroll down saving screen caps as you to get the entire sheet. Then name the jpg images in chronological or numerical order and post them in order or one at a time so the entire spreadsheet is posted and in order.

Thanks James, that's the best way I could do it and make it legible. I have attached a listing of my Sport Stamps. I have about 112 or so. They are all either the Chicago American or Sporting News. They may all be from the Chicago American if they published the paper with the Sporting News heading vice Chicago American. As reflected on the list, I have 4, 6 player panels - 3 multi player (2) panels, and the rest are singles. I hope this helps the cause.

Leon 12-12-2023 11:17 AM

Well done on the screen capture. I will help with some players from papers not mentioned yet. Give me a day or two...

I'm updating all my lists on a daily basis. When I have all organized I will post. Hopefully after the the first of the year. MY scanner is down and a new one for Christmas I hope. And not doing well with my Excel skills. I currently , with the help of NET 54 members , have 967 Sport Stamps documented, with 100's -1000's to go. At least we have a start !!!!

Does anyone have a picture of the Red Grange stamp from the Omaha Bee News? Or possibly even have one for sale? I’ve looked everywhere for a picture of it and can’t find one.

I didn't remember I had this one..

This is pretty similar to mine. I don't have a complete set, but in perusing his images attached to eBay, it doesn't look to me like he does either. And I will also say my scrapbook is in better condition. No guarantees he gets what he's asking, I don't think, but who knows? I have no desire to sell mine, but it is interesting. I contacted SGC and they told me they would happily grade my pile of loose stamps. Not possible to grade the scrapbook, but SGC told me it would most certainly be desirable within the collecting community.

Nice work.
It's going to take a lot more deep dives to get to the bottom of this "set". There are so many newspapers that put them out, it will be almost impossible to catalog all of them...

have gone through the Omaha Bee News, Pittsburgh Sun Telegraph, Washington Herald and TSN (well have the All Star Sport Stamps from July 2nd, are there others throughout the year, anyone know?) From a little research it looks like The Sport Stamps were printed in Hearst owned newspapers (which I can't find a exact/complete list - if I remember correctly what I found shows that there were about 30 Hearst owned newspapers in the 1930s, but dont know how many of those were actually in 1936).

insidethewrapper 09-17-2024 02:09 PM

These papers have been confirmed to have the sport stamps in 1936 :

Detroit Times
Boston American
Sunday Advertiser ( Boston )
Buffalo Times
Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph
The Sporting News
Chicago American
Washington Herald
Los Angeles Examiner
Omaha Bee-News
Oakland Post Enquirer
Atlanta Georgian-American (Minor League)
Seattle Post Intelligencer
The San Francisco Examiner

Thanks for keeping track, Mike. We can add these..

I don't think there are that many of us keeping track, so my vote would be whenever we see one we can add to any of the lists, we should. They aren't as common as they used to be .

You're right, they aren't common, but SGC will grade/authenticate them...if they are loose, not affixed inside a scrapbook or to scrapbook backing.

have found the Boston American and Boston Advertiser online and working through making a checklist

the George Walberg and John Balich are in the June 7, 1936 Boston Advertiser

then the following Sunday ( June 14, 1936 ) the Bill Bonthron and Bill Groh appear without the 'stamp' format and continue like this well into 1937 (have gone as far as May 1937 )

the only other Boston Advertiser sport stamps that i have found are from May 24, 1936 -- John Marcum and Hal Lee along with Boston American sport stamps already printed in the Boston American

was the Boston Advertiser a short series? and for some reason changed to bio 'cards' continuing until ???

does anyone know if these have appeared in a card catalogue?

I got off on a tangent and went into the proverbial Net54 rabbit-hole. For several of us, this is a great thread. Love the little stamps. Would love to get more, different newspapers added to my collection...
These are known but I am not sure they have ever been posted before...

Well, I have a 1936 baseball scrapbook with quite a number of them in it, all the big stars. It was discussed earlier in this thread. It also has 18 that are loose, never glued in. Also, a couple of ZeeNut Joe DiMaggio, 2 different poses. And a complete synopsis of the 1936 MLB and PCL seasons. Obviously put together by someone living in LA, as everything other than the ZeeNut cards came from LA Examiner.

I have it safely put away. I reached out to SGC about it, and that was their recommendation. If I ever wanted to sell it, the person I spoke to said to the right person, it would be desirable, and that an auction house would be the way to go, and by all means keep it intact and safe.

The loose stamps would be graded individually by them, if I chose to do so. For now I keep them safe as well. They are all Yankees and Giants. I have offered them several times for trade in the B/S/T, but was turned down each time. I think because only a handful of us know about them, relatively speaking . So I will just hold on to these also.
