Doug, that middle one is amazing. Love a Ruth Pitching pose.

Yoda 05-24-2022 10:08 AM

While I have several Ruth cards, I am partial to the German Abdullah issue. Will try to post a scan later but am always drawn to the sepia toning and the Babe leaning in a louche pose on his bat.

I'm sure it has been covered here in past but--what is the story with this card? Super rare (e.g. this is the only SGC graded) but allegedly a great mystery. Would love to know. I never even saw it until today....

Look carefully at the three cards even though you cannot see them in this post.

I'll give you a couple of minutes to find them before asking my question.

Ready?

They look like the same image. Correct?

My question is "Did Babe Ruth ever play Right Field, Left Field and Pitch in the same game?"

Exhibitman 05-25-2022 06:40 PM

Haven't seen one of these come to market in a while:

From an entertainment set.

brianp-beme 05-26-2022 02:27 AM

The drawing looks more like Jimmie Foxx to me instead of Babe Ruth. And I don't remember seeing this Ruth card before.

+1 Agreed. They're not even especially common. The double printed #144 only has ~2100 graded combined between PSA and SGC. You could add a 0 to the end of that number and still be nowhere close to meeting demand for the card.

Most of the 1933 Goudy cards in the set on fire including all 4 Ruth cards-!

I often think about all the tobacco, candy and gum cards that were carried around in billfolds, used as bookmarks tossed in a junk drawer or night stand and it's kind of amazing that any of them made it. One day I am going to buy a used book from an estate sale or antique shop and it's going to have a T206 Cobb right in the middle of it...I just know it!

The Ruth I want is the 1921 exhibit. And it'll have to be in low grade like Exhibitman's example. I have the 1921 Cobb and Speaker already. I'd probably have to trade for the Ruth, centered around my Cobb red. Wouldn't that be a beautiful display? And if I got the horizontal pitching 1921 WaJo....wow!

The only Ruth I own, and thus my favorite, is the 34 Butterfinger.

My favorite is the Goudey #144. The first prewar card I ever bought, and the first ever non ebay auction pickup I ever made. I remember seeing a picture of one as a kid, and to this day I still believe it's one of the best looking cards in the hobby.

Pictured with my other Ruths and Goudey Gehrigs, all together today for the first time.

Jesse those are incredible. I particularly love the e210 and e121. Great collection as
usual!

pokerplyr80 06-10-2022 07:15 AM

Thanks Josh, those two certainly are more rare. The e121 is worth quite a bit more, and I really have no idea what the e210 is worth today, they don't come up often. But that 144 pose has just always been a personal favorite of mine. It would be the last one I'd ever sell, and I probably never will.

While the '33 Goudey Ruths are definitely iconic (and rightfully so), you don't see too many of this card. Kind of a fun, quirky pose and from such a recognizable - albeit scarce - set.

Thanks for the kind words. I minimized my collection the past year and have focused on Ruth only, a challenging but fun project and I never get the same feeling from cards of another player as I do “The Babe”

I know what you mean. My VERY humble Ruth collection (consisting of the rough condition w517 and 1935 Goudey that I posted at the very beginning of this thread) are probably the two cards in my collection that I take out and look at most often. There's just something special about a playing days Ruth card.

I haven't seen too many "1"s of 4 in 1s.....

I picked this up on the BST 5 yrs ago (I was about to say a few years ago until I checked). Damn, I am getting old....
Anyway, it was in my first collection and boomeranged back to me....I paid 200 for it the first time and 275 the second time. Those were the days. If we had only known...
I like miscuts and other anomalies...

Yeah, that little guy fills a hole from the 4-in-1 I sold last year and couldn't really justify spending to replace. Feels like a wholesome mini-card, even the cut edges probably have 80 years of wear on them. Reminded me of the insurance commercial, "only pay for what you need". Happy to have it.

Some people think that the Universal Surprise Box quad is meant to be cut up like a strip card. I personally wouldn't cut one but I am agnostic on the question. I wonder if the cuts would get a numerical grade?
