Felsch being interviewed by Jerry Harrington

...Talkin' baseball with Hap Felsch..... The "trolley series" of 1944 with St.Louis Browns vs.St. Louis Cardinals.............note the Pevely Ice Cream sign....... ( I think I read once that despite going six games , the series did not have one stolen base )? .. .. |

Adding a larger-size card of one of the "not out" players.
|
Art "Hap" Felsch I believe claimed to be a cousin or something like that to Happy Felsch of Black Sox fame. Art was known for camping out and being the first to buy tickets to the World Series and he had a pretty long history of doing that

So Cool. Someone who sees baseball history from a different angle than most. I love your pairing of the two pieces; you touch on two of my projects, '44 WS game/series winning hit in game 6 and the catcher that Harrington called games on ('33 Millers). My wife is just shaking her head; as I, with Kid-in-a-Candy-Store enthusiasm, tell her about your cool post. And yes, Baseball Reference shows both sides with "0" SB's. Thank you Mike. Made My Day. Actually just completed it today...managed to pickup a raw W514 Cicotte on ebay...excited to finally finish that subset. :) |

The raw Cicotte has to go thru that new ebay "authenticator" service, so I probably won't see it for a couple weeks unfortunately. The Jackson has some staining on the back, but the front shows very well. Was able to pick that up in the BST section, which was great since I don't see them come up for sale too often. |

Have a good amount of the Black Sox as this is what I primarily collect, but thrilled to pick up this one last night. Been chasing this card for 8+ years. Now only if I can locate that McMullin with tab.

Congrats Epps on the pick up its a great card! (one of my cosigned cards...probably should have worked out a deal here!)
I decided to go after the 1916 and won that one |

I don't know if it's fact or fiction that Comiskey promised Cicotte a $10,000 bonus if he won 30 games but it's not in the contract. The contract says he is to receive $952.50 a month so around $6500-$7000 for the season? Baseball Reference states his salary for 1919 was $9075.00 the losers share for the world series that year was $3254.36 I don't know if that is included in the Baseball Reference Salary. It also says he was paid $5000 for 1917 & 1918 plus a $2000 bonus for 28 wins in 1917 but it doesn't say anything about a bonus for the 29 wins in 1919. https://www.greyflannelauctions.com/...-LOT47570.aspx |

Lefty is a tough one, I'd love to see what you got! Hugh High seems like a stand-up guy, despite having played for the Yankees, so it's just this one and a W514 in my Pete Rose lunchbox....

Thanks Epps, that standard biscuit Lefty is a thing of beauty. My collins-mccarthy is indeed off center upwards, but it doesn’t bother me and I think great for the grade. The tango eggs Weaver/Tinker mixup is sharp too, but it’s a gross violation of the childish ‘good guys’ vs ‘bad guys’ approach I bring to my Cubs and Black Sox collecting. 🤣🤣🤣

Technically not a Black Sock, but Attell was the alleged fixer and operator arranging the game rigging and so he seems to mean to qualify for the thread.
Here's all 4 of his T219 cards, if I'm allowed to play with Attell. |
Nice Attell cards. I believe 3 are actually T218, while the slightly narrower one is a T219.

Talkin "Black Sox " guys....show your Tobacco, Candy, etc. cards of those "involved"
Abe Attell was the "bag man" for New York gamblng gangster Arnold Rothstein. Attell supposedly gave $10,000
to several Chicago White Sox players to "throw" the 1919 World Series. https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...8x49%20_2_.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...x49b%20_2_.jpg Printed and issued in 1948 ---------------------------- Printed and issued in 1949 TED Z T206 Reference . |

3 1/2 years ago I traded a 1915 Cracker Jack Jackson SGC 4 for my dream card and I told myself I can always get another CJ Jackson… then the prices went up. And up. And up. Gulp!!! And up. Well, I had several consignments in REA’s last auction and I was able to get this one.

That #121 of McMullen was custom printed by a Net54 board member, and I bought one from him. In my binder I have the W514s in 15 pocket sheets; 1-120 fit in 8 sheets, except for those pesky players who have cards for 2 teams. There are 4 of those players... so in the 9th page goes #121 McMullen, then 3 of those extra cards for the guys with 2 cards for their 2 different teams. I lack the extra card for Bancroft, I don't have his New York Giants card. I'll eventually find one.
Normally I'd have the different versions of a player adjacent to each other... but I like how there's 1-15, then 16-30, then 31-45... It makes it easy to find a card. Hint on the source of #121 McMullen... Moustache |

Did Happy Felsch have a series associated With Brooklyn called "'The Knothole Gang' back in the 50's? As a kid growing up, I remember such a show, particularly since I was a rabid Dodgers fan.

Hal Chase was considered a controversial figure in the "Black Sox" scandal. This factor prevented him from being in the HOF.
