I picked up this card from RobW here, who also accommodated me in partial trade. So pleased to own a Ruth that looks this nice. This pose has always been my favorite of the Goudeys, as he looks like a tired, old ballplayer nearing the end of his career, which is exactly what he was.

Congrats. I love that card as well hoping it’s my next addition.

(Sorry for the poor quality scan - it's a new scanner that I obviously need to adjust).

Holy sh*t Paul!!!! Amazing! And yes, you definitely need to adjust the settings on your scanner. This card right here folks is pretty much THE holy grail for Zeenut and, of course, HOF rookie card collectors. Where in the hell did you find it???!!!???? I'm SOO jealous..but of course super happy for you. Your collection is absolutely incredible! Nicely done, sir. Nicely done.

Wonderful pickups, they look great! I'm dangerously close to starting to go after those PC796's in earnest, they have such great eye appeal. That 1921 WaJo Exhibit is beautiful, especially for a 1.5. Knowing SGC, there must be a crease in there somewhere, but if so it sure doesn't take anything away from the card. Congrats!!

Ink stain on the back which I'm entirely ok with.

It's been a long time since I've posted a card pickup (mostly photos etc these days), but I did get these two guys recently. 1886 Red Stocking Cigar trade cards of Radbourn and Morrill. Taken out of a Boston-area scrapbook, they have sadly been trimmed down quite a bit. Each measures about 5-1/2" x 2.5". As issued they should be 6-1/2" x 3-3/4", so approximately 75% of each card is still present. But the Radbourn I believe is his rookie card, so 75% is better than none.

Any opinions as to whether or not SGC or PSA will authenticate these with the heavy trim? They are definitely (IMO) real RS Cigar cards. Notice around the edges front and back the small bits of red text still left, which align perfectly with the text on the full 1886 cards.

I would think you'd be okay with SGC. Years ago I had some equally heavily trimmed tobacco/cigar cards from a couple different obscure and very rare 1880's cigar card issues as well. They had no problem encapsulating and marking them all as "A" for me. And unless something has drastictly changed with them over the past several years, would assume they can do the same for you. No experience or clue regarding how PSA would handle them though.

Those look amazing by the way. Good luck.

its debatable...research suggests ruth is depicted in "transitional" garb hence the red sleeves...but I think there are other examples of red sleeves in the set?

Image was made from a famous Conlon photo of Ruth batting for the Red Sox as mentioned in other threads.

Nice pickup!

chadeast 12-14-2021 01:03 PM

The right one finally came along thanks to REA, the pickup of a lifetime for me and one that makes completing the T3 set now actually seem possible! This card is in a PSA AA holder, the holder's been cropped out as I've done in all of my T3 scans. Despite the alteration, it's a really beautiful T3 Cobb IMO and I'm proud to be the new owner.

about Bradenton , Florida , which is the area just South of Tampa where the St. Louis Cardinals held their Spring training in the thirties , back when Diz was a household name , and always a great interview ( and promoter , and marketer)..."The Gas House Gang" of players who were always hanging around the place were great fodder for the sportswriters of the time........we on this forum here were all born too late , dang it...

Love that '14 Cobb, and those Green Ruths. People sleep on how hard that 181 is to find perfectly registered.

I am beyond thrilled to add this piece to my collection. With the rookie and '17s having gone interstellar, for early Ruth pitching this is pretty much "the" one that's kinda sorta still obtainable— at least for the moment. Finally decided to consolidate a ton of stuff into the right one.

Yes it was in the last Heritage auction. It's got a decent crease in the upper right that is much more visible from the back, but the front has such great eye appeal.

That Plank CJ is his best card, IMO, for several reasons. He's in an A's uniform, but he's a Federal Leaguer, and a great write-up on the back. And it's a CJ. It's just a great looking card. Congratulations!

Cool pickup Leon!

Tip of the cap, Patrick.
I felt so lucky when I found mine, a couple of years ago.
Cool thing for me is; I try to stay "old school" as much as I can; an RC is a first appearance in circulated product; excludes, supplements, post cards, game cards and the like.
I strongly believe that the 1908 E91A Bresnahan is his true RC.
