I love this thread. There are some amazing photos.

This is a recent pickup...my first close up of the iron horse.

Picked up this photo of Jake Beckley in the recent Hunt's auction. You don't see many playing-day photos of players from his era.

I just received both of these back from PSA - I posted the Bender in Lucas's snapshot thread but would also like to post it here. The Chief's snap was included in an auction lot of Jimmie Wilson ephemera I purchased a few years ago.

Everyone knows that Cal Hubbard is the only person elected to both the football and baseball Hall of Fame. I think this is a pretty rare autographed type I from his induction to the baseball hall in 76. He died a little over a year later. Hope you enjoy them.

Stan Musial type 1 from 1942/43. Had this one framed and matted about 15 years ago and forgot I had it! Was in my basement with some other baseball items.

If I recall correctly, this scene from "The Seven Year Itch" made Joe D. Furious and was the beginning of the end of their short marriage.

I have this photo of a non HOFer, Hi (Hy) Myers but I'm not sure if it's considered a Type 1 photo. I'm not a photo guy. It measures 4x6 inches. I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me if it's a type 1 photo or not. Thanks in advance.

Not a type 1, but a nice photo!

edtiques 02-08-2023 01:59 PM

Thank you for that information. Could you tell me what type it is?

Likely a type 2.

It would've been a similar photographer to Burke or the like who made period copies to sell.

The almost card style papery texture is a telltale sign that it's not a type 1.

edtiques 02-08-2023 02:31 PM

Thank you again!!

type one, etc

The "clips" were phased out in the early 1920s. That type of printing, where the photo came to the edge of the paper, is known as "full bleed." Conlon, for example used full bleed until about 1915 or '16.

If you have a Conlon of Joe McGinnity with white borders, you can be certain Conlon printed it after Iron Joe was retired. It shouldn't matter, Charlie took the photograph and printed it himself, but there is a distinction.

NEA, the photo service, was slow to adapt. You can find their prints with the white globs in the corners into the 1920s.

The early photo paper, the thin stuff, hasn't existed for a century. It would be easier to fake a Vermeer than a vintage Conlon contact print. Also, look at the patina, which you can't recreate. Buy a black light and a pair of cheap calipers.

So….I am interested in collecting these. What would I do with calipers and a black light? Thanks

A Roger Bresnahan Type 2 I picked up recently. Sure, developed several decades after the fact but still from the original neg and image quality can’t be beat.

Thanks, Chris. I think so too and got it at auction for next to nothing. Here’s one of my Paul Thompson Type 1’s — Miller Huggins at the Polo Grounds in 1910.
