Here’s why. The 1952 topps jackie Robinson is adjacent to the Mick on the high number printing sheet. Same classic set. About the same population in high grade (rare). Neither one is the “true rookie”. Both household names. Both hall of famers pictured while still in their youth. And also each card is just GORGEOUS.
Granted, Jackie is not the same caliber of player that Mantle was- but nobody comes close to Jackie’s historical significance. There’s no number retired in all of baseball for anyone besides Jackie. And I think this significance will only continue to grow over time.
Despite all that, it seems the 52 topps Jackie sells for about ten percent the price of a 52 topps Mantle. Check me on that but I think it’s about right on average.
I don’t think they should be equal - but ten percent? Seems awfully low to me. My two cents.
Agree that the two cards should be closer in value than they are currently. But instead of saying Jackie is undervalued, perhaps it's the Mantle that's way over-valued. :confused:
