And a darn nice one at that!

The 2nd most popular guess hit and I LOVE IT! Corners, centering, colors, registration, but alas the tape did me in! What a beauty though! Wowser!

4.5 st... The card is beautiful. No qualifier? Makes no sense.

vthobby 12-02-2020 10:22 AM

Sorry Lance....

Awesome. You should be thrilled. Quick question; did you submit as “don’t use a qualifier” or did they just assign this grade?

vthobby 12-02-2020 10:27 AM

Good question.....

Gary,

I checked the No Qualifier box and wrote a note in the comments also.

Sometimes as you know they will still assign a Qualifier such as MC even when you ask them not to. I think the "eye appeal" and the fact that the tape is obviously old and not malicious was a factor! Not sure though!

I am thrilled! Thanks for all the comments and the guesses!

Peace, Mike

A card like that really doesn't matter if it had a qualifier or not. It is still gonna bring the coin.

Totally agree....point being that some of us OCDers hate qualifiers!! HA...very happy for the OP. Awesome card!

luciobar1980 12-02-2020 11:13 AM

Sweet card, and the tape wouldn't bother me too much either. Congrats!

JeremyW 12-02-2020 11:38 AM

Great card- congrats! Would love to hear the story of how you found it & brought it back into the hobby.

Original owner collection, all had tape. This card was the "prize". I am good at "finding cards". Been doing it since 1976. Have found original owner 1957-58 Topps Basketball, 1948 Bowman Basketball low numbers, multiple Babe Ruth baseballs, T206s, T207s, all from New England. I use word of mouth and aggressive use of friend to friend constant reminding. Always looking! Some of these finds were with a friend who is also very aggressive at asking anyone and everyone we interact with! Little bit of luck and instinct. It serves me well when I collect celebrity baseballs also. Covidd has put a damper on my methods but there is so much uncovered stuff out there! Trust me!

Thanks! Mike

Thanks for the response. Hard work always pays off.

Congrats and nice of you to sponsor the contest and offer prizes!

Ricky 12-02-2020 02:46 PM

Congrats! Love the card!

AGuinness 12-02-2020 04:01 PM

Congrats! And the best part is how much you clearly enjoy it, that's the way the hobby should be!

oldeboo 12-02-2020 04:08 PM

Great card no matter what and good job with finding these gems.

Not so fast! I can still win this thing once this card gets submitted for the coveted "Purple Label!" I'm submitting a protest that a winner has been prematurely declared!

P.S. Beautiful card!

Thanks Kevin, I just got the paperwok from the White House for a re-count.

I'm on it! Along with the Alaska Vote Count! lol

BTW as a former comic collector, I did get the "purple" reference! lol

I can see the kid in 1948 putting the tape on and enjoying his card thinking "I hope they don't give me that damn "Altered" Qualifier or the "purple label! Happy Holidays! I enjoyed your humor! :)

Peace, Mike

Mike...actually my reference was to the ridiculous (my opinion only) new service being offered by a startup company where they will "grade" the job your authenticator did, and if they deem the card looks better than the grade it received, they will affix a "Purple Label" to your slab indicating that the card is a really nice 1.5. So, should this card be submitted and awarded the purple label, I would technically be correct here! Lol

Here's a link to the net54 thread where the Purple Label was discussed:

I appreciate the correction. I instantly thought of the "purple" CGC labels for comics. That service you pointed out is hilarious and I had not heard of it! Thanks again! Mike

If this card ever shows up as a 1.5 Purple Label you will hear from my lawyer. ;)
