I saw that tour, too, here in Cleveland!

There is no such thing as a rock star who toured for 25+ years who doesn't have people talking about how "difficult" they can be, and sometimes I sure they are. Jeff was no different, but I would bet that the people who would say good things out number those who say bad by at least 100 to 1. And really, how bad can a guy who wears a Gumby shirt be? Doug "less than 100-1 about me" Goodman PS - they didn't show up... |
Glad to hear it. Hate when I hear bad things about musicians I respect. Love the stories about Lemmy and Dio always making time for the fans. They got it.

Doug, love these stories! I'm a little younger (49) so I missed the early 80's stuff live. Also I was broke as hell during high school so just went to parties and local clubs when I could roadie for friends bands and get in for free. Didn't start going to lots of bigger shows until the early 90's.
I just recently realized that the first time I saw Slayer was the San Berdo show that they recorded for Decade of Aggression. Only took me almost 30 years to figure that out! http://www.collectingbrooklyn.com/ne...rtTickets1.jpg http://www.collectingbrooklyn.com/ne...rtTickets2.jpg |

Seriously.I look forward to this thread whenever there's a new post.Reading that Dio story, proves exactly that! \m/ Beautiful man. Love the stories and all the details. Simply amazing!
I know King Diamond and Motörhead have been mention....combine the two names... Anything for Diamond Head? |

Nice. Speaking of, got any early Metallica stories to share? I ordered the "Murder in the Front Row" dvd (already have the book), can't wait to get it.
I grew up in Downey about a mile from Ron's house where they had their practices in the early days. Didn't know it at the time, found out way later. When I saw his yearbook come up for auction I had to have it. As a bonus, my best friend's older sister who I had a childhood crush on is in it! :) http://www.collectingbrooklyn.com/ne...aYearbook1.jpg http://www.collectingbrooklyn.com/ne...aYearbook2.jpg http://www.collectingbrooklyn.com/ne...aYearbook3.jpg http://www.collectingbrooklyn.com/ne...aYearbook4.jpg http://www.collectingbrooklyn.com/ne...aYearbook5.jpg |

The first time I went to Japan was in 1993 with a band called D.R.I.
We almost weren't able to go because 6 days before the first show 3 of the 4 band members were locked up in a prison in Spain (it wasn't jail, it was a prison), but that's a completely different story. That story ends with a high speed drive to the Barcelona airport, even though our flight was from Madrid, but we eventually made it to Japan, and that's where : When I checked us into our Tokyo hotel, I used this credit card, fully expecting that the front desk clerk would frown at me and ask for a real card. But he didn't. So we all headed to our rooms, and it wasn't until a few hours later, while returning from a record buying adventure, that somebody asked me for another credit card because "the one you used to check in keeps being declined". So much for "Unquestioned Credit". |

I received the Murder in the Front Row DVD in the mail today. I pre-ordered it on the website, and didn't expect it until next week. I sent a text to Brian Lew (he is "Umlaut" from the Dio blog post a few days ago), one of the authors of the book, and he was as shocked as I was how early I received it.

Found a few things in a box today...
Handmade card the My Chemical Romance guys gave a few of us after they spent a month as our opening act in April / May 2005. I waited for Ted to arrive to radio station KRQR for an interview with a couple other guys and he did not disappoint. After signing stuff and chatting with us he said "well, I better the fuck out of here, that chick's probably pissin' her pants waiting for me to show up" and he headed inside to do his interview. I have no idea where I got the Tiffany thing. I think a bus driver I had, who had once driven for her, got it for me (sadly, I never met her). |
Niceee! Wasn't expecting that lol
MCR note...very cool item! Happy to see them back touring! As always, thanks for sharing! \m/ |

Nice Ted Nugent Auto. And great story. Waiting outside a radio station to grab an Auto. Been awhile since I posted anything to your amazing thread so my only pick. John Entwistle you can see the wear and he inly played one song with it. Boris the Spider Sept 10 1979 at the Capital Theatre in NJ.
Also from the Capitol Theatre Ted Nugent June 18 1977. The previous Saturday night June 11 I saw Led Zepplin at MSG. Both were outstanding shows and at 16 I was hooked on live Rock and Roll. |
My wife picked up my monthly CDs from Music Outlet in Enfield,CT, which is one of the great and enduring record stores. She opened up the Used Cannibal Corpse Gallery of Suicide CD and found a concert ticket and asked me if we were there. I confirmed, yes Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death and Immolation! Decibel Tour 2016. Death to all but metal!

These posters are from a tour in 1994 that started with 23 shows in 23 days in the US, and after 3 "off" days was followed by 43 shows in 44 days in Europe. The day without a show in Europe was because they were "Banned In Bremen".
70 days, 66 shows, 16 states, 14 countries, 35,000 miles. THAT is how to tour. Love those guys. I saw them for the 167th time a year ago yesterday (opening for Slayer) and that was the first time I had seen them with George "singing". Doug PS - Correction, I just checked my records and saw that earlier that year, they had done 53 shows in a leisurely 58 days around North American. the Toledo poster dates from that run. |

Best I can say is I caught a drumstick at a George Thorogood concert in San Diego in 1986 (with the aid of some pretty good elbows to clear the space, courtesy of a childhood playing hockey in NY) and stuck around afterwards to shake hands with the band at the edge of the stage.

I’m a Pearl Jam freak, so I jumped at the opportunity to buy handwritten “Jeremy” chalk poster used in the music video. The story goes that Eddie Vedder wrote words in chalk then they green screened the words into the video. I am so psyched. The dark black photos are screen grabs from the video, and the chalk matches perfectly.
Not sure if PJ is a bit beyond this post but I wanted to share regardless. Anyone with tips on how to frame it, let me know... |

My Daughter was in 7th grade and there was some drama in a classroom. The teacher asked my Daughter if she saw anything and she said " That don't Befunt Me" her classmates giggled and I got called in to explain that she was saying it was none of her ( meaning my Daughter's) Business. And it was a line from a George Thorogood song. And since they were little whenever my kids asked me something that did not concern them I said "That don't Befunt you" She gave me a look that told me I would not be her choice for parent of the year. My Wife was not amused less so when I shared the story with friends and family. ( which I did exactly once in her presence). Saw George in a Club in New Brunswick NJ. And Everyone had a great time listening to a night of great Music.

Wow, I love all these great stories and am especially jealous of the guys here that were able to get picks during a show. After literally 100's of club and arena shows over 40 some years, I have yet to get a pick as a souvenir...although I was able to get 3 drum sticks. The first two I got at a Dictators show in 1977 at the Starwood in Hollywood. The Dictators were, in my opinion, a missing link between Punk and Metal/Hard Rock with lots of energy. I was standing in front of the stage when the late great Richie Teeter cracked a stick and threw it down in front of his kit in disgust. Luckily for me, the stick hit at an angle and came right at me. I was able to quickly get my hand up and snag it on the fly, which brought a big smile and a thumbs up from Teeter. After the encore, most people filed out but about 7 of us remained on the floor screaming for more, which they obliged 2 more times...as they came out for the third encore, the lead singer came to the front of the stage and asked "who are you guys?". Afterwords, they came out and chatted with us for awhile, and brought out another drumstick for me to have a pair. Great night.
The other time was in San Diego with the Scorpions. I had seats about 35 feet from the stage and off to the left. Klaus Meine came over to our side of the stage and lofted a stick in our direction. Never thinking it would reach us, we all stood up and stuck up our hands...couldn't really see anything but felt the damn stick hit me right in the palm as it bounced off. Pissed, I told my wife if that ever happened again, I wouldn't drop it. Well, about 2 min later, here comes Klaus again and throws another one. What are the chances that he was good enough to throw it that far and that accurately? Well, this time it hit me in the hand and I caught it. I'll have to dig those sticks out of wherever they're stashed...probably some box in the garage along with many negatives I shot of bands in the 70's and early 80's including a young Lita Ford with the Runaways and during her first solo tour. Here's some Dictators for you to hear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q8Mb0cz258 |
I forgot how awesome "Stars" was. Dio, Halford, Tate. The 3 best voices in all of metal, then and still. Malmsteen, Lynch, Campbell - tough to find better players in the 80's. Very cool!
|
Quote:
Brian Johnson Dave Mustaine Bruce Dickinson Ozzy James Hetfield Ian Gillan David Wayne (Metal Church) Lemmy Rob Zombie and I may get criticized for these two but: Axl Rose Sebastian Bach Then Dio (although awfully powerful for a 5 footer) |
Doug, any Candlemass stories?

I'd thought the performance filmed for "Black and Blue" might have just been a bad night, but no. Of the guitar players I've seen, Malmsteen…. not even top 10. People like him, but again, just unimpressive in concert. |

Bon Scott...not just great but so distinctive. Two words into any song you know it is him.
No love for Glenn Hughes? I guess it's an era thing as I was a teenager in the late 1970s-early 1980s so the formative years bands for me were Zeppelin, AC/DC, Van Halen (gods in the San Fernando Valley area while I was in high school in North Hollywood 40 or so years ago), Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, etc. Classics, you might say. FWIW, which ain't much, I think Eddie Vedder has one of the great rock voices. I don't recall if she'e been mentioned yet, but Joan Jett is awesome. I saw her at the Hollywood Bowl last summer and she rocked. I'm more of a punk than metal fan, though I was into the early metal bands until punk and related genres (except hardcore...yech) came on. I kinda dropped out of it in the mid-eighties, so the 'hair bands' are mostly unknown to me. Learning a lot in this thread. |

Better than Ronnie?... Johnson - not a chance. Bon Scott way better. Mustaine - Megadeth is my FAVORITE band of all time but Dave's not better (close). Dickinson - 3rd favorite band of all time, as good, not better (close again). Ozzy - LOVE Black Sabbath/Ozzy, not even close talent wise. Hetfield - no way. Gillan - that's just silly. Wayne - not in the same universe much less planet. Lemmy - second favorite band, nope. Zombie - closer to worse than best. Rose - talented, not in the same league. Bach - seriously one of the best metal singers, unbelievable range, but not Dio. Hope that clears that up! :D |
Quote:
But yes of course he'd be on the All Time list. Sorry All, I was referring to who they could have had better then Dio for the Stars album. I'd dig Bon myself up if I could. Definitely was the most distinctive and in the Top 3 for sure. .....and to the above list, my error on Rob Zombie, not a particularly great voice, as probably can be said of Lemmy, but just love how they sound. And my one big omission, and Winner of the Best Scream hands down.....TOM ARAYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! |
And for those who like Chick Rock, check these chicks out....they are pretty good and funny too.

The most iconic voices in hard rock belong to Ozzy (without Black Sabbath, there is no heavy metal), Scott (so identifiable), Halford (greatest range and arguably best band) and Dickinson (no greater songs were ever written about English history/culture... well maybe by Led Zeppelin). I love this thread but do not really have anything exciting to add... I wanted to ask about this business card as it came out of a collection of sports tickets from the mid to late 1950s etc that I purchased but this card is out of place? I don't know about Johnny and Downtown Records, but I do know that today it's 111 days since I had a show.
The last time I went this long between shows was after the Steve Earle "Guitar Town" tour (I was the merch guy) ended in March 1987 and then Death Angel's first tour (I was the tour manager) started until July. I don't have any Steve Earle or Death Angel scans, so here are some newsletters : |

I first saw Van Halen in 1978 when they opened up for Black Sabbath at MSG. I was staying in a hotel in Long Island in 1995 and was talking to a few colleagues in the Lobby when the Members of Van Halen walked in after a show. I saw Alex and started talking and mentioned the 78 tour and he called over Sammy Hager and the two of them spent about an hour telling me stories about the tour. Great night for me Alex signed an auto wrote it to me but I asked him to personalize it to my son Kyle. Sammy looked for a CD took out the liner and signed that gor me. Eddie I saw briefly the next day and also was very nice and signed for my son. Really nice guys.. Rest in Peace Eddie. We lost a National Treasure
