Did you know that, or did you have to look it up?
By the end of 1983 Ryan assumed the strikeout lead for good & the rest is HISTORY!

I did know it was Lefty and it was in 1983 but I did check with my certificate of attendance.

Hi Dave,
Nice pickup. I'm glad to see that you were the one that got it. I had this on my watch list, but the lack of the web prevented me from pulling the trigger in spite of the beautiful condition of the mitt. I'm sure that you know that this was Vandy's personal endorsed glove (JDM) that came in this glove box.

Scott,
I have been dying for one of these since I saw your incredible display that featured one. Would kill to find a box like yours.

Dave,
I'd be honored to keep an eye out for one of these boxes to complete the set. ;)
Stay tuned...

Lelands just sold one of those boxes recently. I was an underbidder mostly interested in the gambling letter sent to Ban Johnson. Such an odd grouping.

July 2017 has really been one of my best pickup months in the last two years.

While watching the 2017 All Star Game I received an e-mail from a collector friend of over 20 years. About 25 years ago at a baseball card show in the NY area he picked up the home and road lineup cards from a game played in 1983 at Montreal. These game used lineup cards originated from the personal collection of long-time NL umpire Bob Engel. Noting that HOF pitcher Nolan Ryan was the pitcher for the Astros in the game he bought them. Only last week when researching the game did he realize how historic the game truly was....

On 4/27/83 at Montreal's Expo Stadium, Nolan Ryan became the all-time career strikeout leader with 3,509 K's as he passed HOF great Walter Johnson's standard of 3,508 K's. For the record, Montreal player Brad Mills was Ryan's milestone strikeout.

When my friend realized what he had, he was nice enough to immediately contact me asking if I would like to buy them, which I certainly did. :) ;)
I have always hoped to find the lineup or dugout cards to this game because this was a major strikeout milestone for Nolan en route to his career standard of 5,714 K's, which is a record that quite certainly will never be broken.

These lineup cards now join a mini-collection that I have put together of memorabilia linked to this 3509 K milestone.
In my personal collection I have a 3509 game ball, scored program that is signed and inscribed by Ryan milestones 3508 K's (ties WaJo) - Tim Blackwell and 3509 Brad Mills (sets new record), both umpire lineup cards and a souvenir plastic cup that commemorated Nolan Ryan becoming the all-time strikeout king.

TRIVIA DID YOU KNOW TIME

After passing Walter Johnson for career strikeouts, Nolan Ryan briefly lost his strikeout king crown to another HOF pitcher. Can you name him and how this occurred?

Nolan Ryan's milestone 3509th strikeout Brad Mills had an interesting career footnote last week in the 2017 All Star Game. Can you tell me what it is and the unusual circumstance by which it occurred?

Nice stuff! The lineup cards are cool. Not sure if it makes any difference in value, but 2 HOFers on the Montreal roster adds a nice touch.

It has signatures from Tom Fears, Norm Van Brocklin, and Elroy Hirsch. But, more importantly for me, it clearly started during the Santa Clara University 1949 season, which ended with an Orange Bowl victory over Bear Bryant's Kentucky team. Unfortunately, Bryant did not sign the hat. I always heard that he was pretty pissed about this loss, and never wanted to talk about it.

Very cool. Glad you got it!

First full tickets I've seen from these games. Was able to get day 4 as well. Wichita Boeing Bombers won the series led by Wichitan and MVP Daryl Spencer.

Hey Clint - do you have a hookup with Daryl Spencer? I'd be happy to take any Giants stuff off his hands!

Rob I knew Daryl but he passed earlier this year. One of the nicest guys around. I don't believe he had any Giants memorabilia left. I never seen any other than newer autos. I got many of his local baseball items and a Brooks Robinson hat from his old restaurant. If anything turns up around here I'll let you know.

One thing I noticed was how disappointed he was on missing out on the 54 series due to military service.

I've always loved the skyline patch on Mets jerseys. Too bad they abandoned them for a while but good they're again featured on Mets jerseys.

Was happy to pick up this football program from the Raiders first regular season game on Sep 11, 1960 vs the Houston Oilers. As there were only 12,000 in attendance that day, I suspect there are not too many of these around.

Was able to cross two tickets off my list for a total of 50 bucks, which also checked off the box of being cheap right now. LOL
Anyway, got a season ticket for the newest 3000 hit club member, and a 1971 all star game stub. The stub is a bit rough, but actually will display much better than the picture shows. The 71 all star game was the second AS game that I remember watching as a kid, and also the game that Reggie really took the national stage with his homerun that hit the transformer on top of Detroit stadium.

This Cubs mini in pristine condition, that was very fairly priced, was my most exciting pickup from the National. :D

While there were quite few pinbacks at the show, to my knowledge there wasn't a single Cubs/Tiger pin I wanted/needed available for my collection.

I do really like this Newark Bears pin that I picked up for a bargain price.

I also picked up a Redwings nodder and a couple old University of Michigan pinbacks for my daughter

Nice pickup Mike. Those game 7 tickets have really spiked in price, but they do show up at some reasonable prices occasionally...at least mine did and it sounds like yours did too.

Cool pick-up!

Looks like the artist is RJ Dwyer. Couldn't find anything in a cursory search online. I found a James Dwyer who was an illustrator, but he was born in 1898. Being that this piece dates to 1901, that would make this James Dwyer either the wrong person or quite the child prodigy.
