It also enabled me to complete my Magee portrait back run which includes the Magie something I've been pursuing for 4 years. Hopefully if I have time I will post the run later this week. Robert, great choice for a back run.

This C. 1930's Bobby Veach Coal Company Ad Card with Ty Cobb, Bobby Veach & Sam Crawford was my fave!

Not the most expensive item I bought this year but for some reason there's something about this one that grabs me:

1946 Nashua Dodgers team signed picture with Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, Walter Alston, Buz Bavasi and others. Jackie Robinson obviously broke the "color barrier" in 1947, but in 1946 while Jackie was playing in Montreal, Campanella and Newcombe were in Nashua.

I had hoped to find a ball signed by that team (to go with my 1946 Montreal Royals ball and 1947 Dodgers) and thought the picture was a lesser option (especially with the signatures on the back, which makes displaying a challenge) but there's something I really like about it.

Very cool!!

And some very nice looking cards that have been late entrants to this thread!

Thank you! Very excited to have it now, truly a beauty! Went way less than I was expecting.

As you should be! Great color and centering. I love finding gorgeous cards in affordable low grades. That one is nicer than 80% of the 3s out there.

I love this piece because it cuts against the usual impression of Cobb as hated by teammates.

My favorite would be either the Chick Gandil T206 or the 1934 Quaker Oats Babe Ruth Premium. Hard to choose between those.

Graig Kreindler

Nice cards Val and everyone else.

I had already posted, but it is still 2016 and a present (to myself) left under the tree is among my favorites for the year . . .

Graig Kreindler never ceases to impress. Deacon White, the best catcher of the 1870s, now joins Charlie Bennett, arguably the best catcher of the 1880s.

These are based on their 1886 Tomlinson Studio portraits. If and when a Sam Thompson or Lady Baldwin portrait surfaces, I will be knocking on Graig's door once again. I never thought I'd order a portrait, let alone two, but the quality surpasses all expectations. They are the perfect way to add a little color to an otherwise sepia world.

Love it Graig, Merry Christmas All!

ValKehl 12-25-2016 09:13 PM

Kevin, Leon & Joe, thanks for the kind words! Joe, your Kreindlers are absolutely awesome!

Leon, the older I get, the more frequently my wife says, "if not now, when?" She has already convinced me to spend the $$ to attend the National at Chicago next year, something I haven't done in a dozen or so years, back when she worked for an airline and I was able to fly for free. (I have, however, attended all the recent, closer Nationals at Baltimore, Cleveland, & Atlantic City.) Is she a keeper, or what!
Val

Got this at The National. Pretty sure it was the only one there.

Hartley is my Grandpa and Uncle's manager when they were in the minor leagues with the Findlay Oilers (St. Louis Browns farm system).

My favorite pick-up of 2016 was this ca. 1904-05 cabinet photo of the Tacoma Track Team, with Ernie Tanner. Honestly wish I had this image for the Claxton book, but purchased it shortly after publication. The earliest known team photo of the "greatest athlete ever produced in Washington state": http://www.blackpast.org/aaw/ernest-c-tanner-1889-1956

It has since been donated to the Shanaman Sports Museum in Tacoma.

Just arrived, and immediately my favorite pre-WWII pick up of 2016. An upgrade that I just had to have once I spied it.

Congrats Daryl!

I had a great collecting year - my second full year into prewar collecting. I learned a lot and picked up some cards that I'm really happy with. It was tough to pick one favorite, but I think it has to be this:

I think that's my favorite card I didn't pick up. Love that card, and haven't seen more than one in the five years I've collected.

You're looking in the wrong places my friend :). There are about 3-5 signed '34 Greenbergs that sell every year. Or close to that.

Wish my Greenberg was as nice, that example is stunning.

itjclarke 01-03-2017 09:09 PM

Thanks guys, I finally got to dropping it off in my safe deposit box today, but I may need to break him back out sooner than later.

Sam-- as Brent says, there are a handful these and they seem to come available time to time. I think I've only seen 1 or 2 on eBay over the past few years, with the most recent I remember lasting only a few minutes before being purchased as a BIN. I've seen a few more via AHs, which is where I got this one. Happy hunting.
