Ebbets Field Cap
1 Attachment(s)
The only one of these I have seen was the one offered by REA back in 2014 (dated to the 1950s). I always had issues with that dating for a few reasons:
1. The fact that it said Ebbets Field (ushers cap read Dodgers by that time) 2. The size of the employee badge (smaller than those you see in period images of that time frame; I have small collection of these and the smaller ones pre-date the late 1940s) 3. The style of cap. 4. The color of the cap. 5. Period images from the late 1940s-1950s show venders in a different style cap. I got to thinking that in 1937, the Brooklyn Dodgers wore uniforms with green lettering, numbers, and green caps. So I spent some time going through the Brooklyn Eagle and found this for 22 April, 1937: “All of the ushers at Ebbets Field are new and there are 36 of ‘em in those natty green uniforms.” Not prepared to call this an ushers cap yet, but the color, embroidery, and pin size on the REA example suggest to me this is late 1930s/early 1940s. This would help to explain why you can't find images of it during the "Capital of Baseball" era. Dave Grob |

Entered the realm of jerseys and went for this circa 1937 Hoover High School (San Diego) jersey...the same team and jersey style of Ted Williams' (although this was from the estate of another player). Now just trying to figure out if Ted and Warren Kanagy ever played on the team together, or if there time never overlapped (since Ted graduated in early 1937) . If anyone knows the 1936 Hoover roster, please feel free to let me know:)

Some interesting new items for my women in baseball collection.
Program and game ticket for American softball team versus an international team in Japan. I believe this to be post war, but not by much. http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...psx4joyukb.jpg http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...pst1n6fjuc.jpg http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...psni5doh04.jpg And two of my favorite pieces in the collection... These are a pair of postcards featuring members of the 1925 Philadelphia Bobbies girls baseball team. The identity of the right hander I do not know, but I am fairly certain that the tall lefty is the tragic visage of Leona Kearns. You can read more about the Bobbies unfortunate trip to Japan here http://sabr.org/research/dropping-pi...elphia-bobbies. Ms. Kearns was just 17 years old when she embarked on the trip with the team, and through a series of unfortunate events, the team was stranded in Japan. Three of the players, including Ms. Kearns, ended up having to stay for over a month in Japan as the rest of the team and the manager had left them there. The three finally begged for enough money to make the return trip to America, but along the way they encountered massive waves and Ms. Kearns was swept overboard. Her body was never recovered. http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps7sizgglx.jpg http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps8ssleylj.jpg The back of the postcard is in both English and Japanese, which would make sense if they were brought with the team to possibly sell as souvenirs on their trip through Japan. Picked this up. The Giants did a "Tour of Japan" in the preseason from 1960-71. I found a picture of Bobby Bonds (little Barry to the left), toting this type of bag through SFO on March 31, 1970. The bag came from a guy who has some other personal effects of Bonds, so there's a possibility this was Bobby's...

Also, this. The seller is a little prone to hyperbole and says this patch is made with the "same bullion thread they used in high quality WW II patches." At any rate, it's a nice patch. I'm guessing it may have been made for a blazer but I have no photo evidence.

These Hassan Cigarette comic pins are very common, with an endless number of variations, but this particular one has been quite elusive for me, as I've been looking for a while.

1944 Sampson US Naval Training Center vs. Lyconing Aviation program
5 Attachment(s)
Here is a cool pickup that I scored tonight on eBay related to Johnny Vander Meer's baseball stint in the Navy:
An original program to the game played on August 13, 1944 between The US Naval Training Center (Sampson, NY) vs. Laconing Aviation of Williamsport, PA. Apparently Lyconing got smoked 14-1 in this one. If you look at Vandy's team roster, it obviously stacked with several MLB players. Sampson was apparently undefeated to other 22 other baseball teams that included the Cleveland Indians, Boston Braves, Boston Red Sox and Vandy's former ML Cincinnati Reds team up to this point in their season. I can't imagine that many of these scorebooks survived WWII. Certainly primitive looking, but that was a sign of the times I suppose... This is a great complimentary piece to other items that I own related to Vandy's stint at Sampson. I also included my favorite other piece from this era. A signed photo of Vandy's entire basic training class (Company 347) at Sampson in March of 1944. |
