Just getting into the set and I absolutely love it.
I think it’s the combinations of gorgeous fronts, player stories, production anomalies, variations and availability of the base set that make it the ultimate collectors dream. Though I am a complete novice, I was thinking of going down the road of making the ultimate information resource on the set, combining player stories and bios with set info. Does such a thing exist? What resources are currently out there? |
I started the set about three months ago and have about 70 graded 3 or better. Seems to be getting slower as I go along though.

Having completed this set.....I continue my T205 "hunt" by forming these A - B - C - D sub-sets.
Here is an example of my favorite...... http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...Huggins25x.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...uggins25bx.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |

There are some sharp, graded exmt T205 commons included in the LTOG auction, which just went live. Plenty of goodies there for everybody. Nice job, Al.

Does a list exist of T205 cards and their availability in the 11 different tobacco brand backs? Does any T205 exist with all 11 brands?

Does anybody have any idea how many T205 hall of famers have been found with a Hindu or Drum back?
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |
Drum - Mordecai Brown
Hindu - Walter Johnson Taken from Ted Z.’s detailed thread on T205 backs, where he also predicts that Miller Huggins and Zach Wheat Drums may someday be found. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=197200 A couple of notable non-HOFers exist as well - Chase Drum and Cicotte Hindu. |

I’ve never seen the Hindu Duffy before - that’s a sweet card.
|
I am not sure but I don’t think Duffy has been confirmed till now. I am still trying to find my paper list.

Acquired these Drum backs in the same era but a little after the Hindu backshttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bf99b40483.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...31aeab4522.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...32121a8a7c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...03960fdd84.jpg

Ted I would trust your list are accurate and quite up to date.
Sorry to hear you couldn’t make it to National. Would love to chat if you got time. I believe you should have my number still. |
That's fantastic Ted...do you have a list for Drum too?

T205 DRUM's
There are exactly 32 subjects in the T205 set printed with the DRUM back. For more info regarding these DRUM cards,
check-out this thread....... T205 DRUM vs HINDU...... T205 A=B=C=D pattern http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...genABbk25x.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...Lobert25bx.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ggins25bxx.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...rDRUMx25bx.jpg The key factor in this A = B = C = D equation is the Black American Beauty back. NOTE that a T205 subject with a Green American Beauty back will NOT be found with a DRUM back. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...erDRUMx50x.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...05Drum25xb.jpg T205 A-B-C-D connection.......32 subjects James Austin John Bates Beals Becker George Bell William Bergen Russell Blackburne Albert Bridwell Mordecai Brown Harold Chase (border on shirt) Frank Corridon Thomas Downey Louis Evans George Graham (blue signature) Buck Herzog Richard Hoblitzell Miller Huggins Jack Knight A. Latham Thomas Leach John Lobert Briscoe Lord Patrick Moran Frederick Olmstead George Paskert Fred Payne Edward Phelps John Quinn Lewis Richie David Shean George Stone Zach Wheat Harry Wolter The above 5 subjects in bold letters have yet to be confirmed with the DRUM back. But, they already have been confirmed with the A - B - C backs. Therefore, I expect these 5 subjects will eventually be discovered with the DRUM back. TED Z T206 Reference . |
Great news guys. I found my checklist. I will try to take pictures and post it later

I'm sorry, but they're all worthless since none of them have been graded by a third party grader! :D
|
Lol...that's fine by me...I have never submitted a card for grading...made me mad to "have to" buy some T205s that were graded to finish the set because I could not find raw cards in the condition I wanted to fit in with my set
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |
I guess I will have to consider my set complete even though they have found 2 more variations since I thought mine was completed many years ago...the Wilhelm "suffered" and Mathewson "loss" variations...but if I could ever pick those 2 up "reasonable" I guess I would consider it...lol

Grading offers another level of frustration. I had 5 cards not graded despite me measuring every card before I bought them. I have cards graded lower than I thought they should, but when I look to upgrade with higher grades, the higher grade is in worse condition. You are better off just enjoying your cards. |
So using Ted's lists, the only HoFers that have been found with Drum backs are Brown and Johnson and the only HoFer that has been found with a Hindu back is Duffy as Huggins and Wheat are unconfirmed...I have a Drum Brown and a Hindu Duffy...any idea on how many of each of them may exist? And does anyone have the Drum Johnson or a pic of it?

It got sold in my catalog collection sale through Heritage Auctions, around 3 yrs ago. Here is the 2nd half of my current set I am working on... Yours are in nicer shape than these but I don't want to spend so much to get the top tier. I am on a budget :). Waiting for decent centering and not much flaking is making it more fun albeit a bit slower.

Leon, I have a total of 291 T205 cards including duplicates...only missing the Wilhelm and Mathewson variations to have all 221 cards for a master set...have at least 2 examples of all 11 different tobacco brands and have at least one Hall of Famer with all 11 different brand backs...and have one blank back card(Jimmy Dygert).. but only 20 of those 291 T205 cards are graded and I am perfectly OK with that...I just enjoy looking at them without being "entombed"...I guess if I ever decide to sell them I may be forced to get them "slabbed and graded" to maximize the greatest financial reward...I often wonder what some of the old time collectors would think about the grading process...I only really got to know one serious old time collector...his name was Crawford Foxwell from Marylands eastern shore and he used to set up at local shows in our area...he always had a little of everything and was extremely knowledgable

After looking at my earlier post I realized I mixed up the rare Hindu and Drum back Hall of Famers...there is only 1 confirmed Drum back Hall of Famer and that is Brown as Huggins and Wheat have not been confirmed with Drum backs...and there are 2 confirmed Hindu back Hall of Famers and they are Duffy and Johnson...thanks again to Ted Z for the list and Leon for the pic of the Johnson Hindu

while I was still typing away. Anyhow, now this matter is clear. Trust me, Huggins and Wheat will eventually be discovered with the DRUM back. T-205
I am at 52, including a few HOF, in consistently low grade. List is on http://www.oldbaseball.com/ and interested in trading some of my 50's and 60's baseball to get more. I am more than a quarter done, excluding minor leagues and crazy variations.
Probably my favorite baseball set ever! Love those colors and most of mine still have a back to read :) Best, Ed Pike |
