Added this PSA 8 Hank Sauer with some recent 1959 Topps I picked up. I've gone over this every which way from Sunday and this is a bump waiting to happen. Exhibits all the qualities of a 9.
Old slab...hmmmm. RayB |

Oohhh, I love those Bowmans!

Setup at a local card show today to sell some closet junk. Had a good time sharing a table with Jim (jimtigers65). Spent the proceeds on this guy.

Memory Lane Win
1 Attachment(s)
After looking for quite some time, I was able to score a '54 Kaline last night in the Memory Lane auction. I got it for $532 + BP = $638. While it is not the $450-$500 card that it was 6-8 months ago, based upon recent trends, I was pleasantly surprised to have landed it. What was more surprising was that it was only 4 bids and I placed the winning bid over a week ago.
There was one on Ebay (a 6) that sold on Thursday for $720 and one that will end soon that is heading in that direction. My upgrades are now down to just a couple and Kaline was a big hurdle. PWCC sold one for $1400+ last month and it might have been a PWCC exception/higher end example, so happy that I got it where I got it and maybe a sign that things are starting to settle? |
Great mid grade examples fellas!
Love the DQ stuff! |
My latest impulse pickup
I picked up this Robinson exhibit at a show on Saturday. Is it a good one? I've heard that there are reprints of this card. I'm not sure what to look for.

When I saw it, I thought it looked good; but then I realized I didn't have a clue. I just thought it looked naturally old. What would one look for/at to determine authenticity? Anything in particular? Thanks |

Keep at it, collect what you love and don't get discouraged. I keep reminding myself what the pastor teaches (and it is a hard lesson). Comparison triggers one of two feelings - pride - when you feel a bit better than your comparison, or shame when when you feel a bit worse. It is a marathon, not a sprint (another message that I have to remind myself). Good luck! and happy collecting! |

Awesome Mantle Dave! One of the first vintage cards I bought when I was a young lad was a '69 Mantle. Sure wish I still had it. Congrats!
|
Thanks Dean, I'm almost certain 1969 was my first year of buying cards ( I was 7). Alas, none survived. The earliest childhood cards which made it all the way thru to today are 1970- and most of those are football
|
Not a pickup but I couldn't help sharing. Thinking about the various discussions as to whether 52T Mantle is an RC since it's Mantle's first Topps card, here is some similar logic applied by one eBay seller to Hammering Hank!

These 2 arrived today. I have been trying to watch my spending lately but I got caught up in the "I want it" bidding war and spent more than I intended on the Dimaggio.
Since I won the Dimaggio card, I thought I may as well see if I can win another off the seller and ended up winning this Frank Smith card as well. I am not disappointed with my Dimaggio win, as, other than the top left corner, the card is in real nice shape and I did get it quite a bit cheaper than what they normally go for. |

Beautiful card!

Thanks Lou and Neal !! The rough cut drew me to it. Being a Clemente collecter who would never be able to afford a 5 or better 55 Rookie nowadays I'm happy with this one! The 56 looks better too !
|
The 56 Clemente is one of my favorite cards of all time. Yours is a beauty!
|
Thanks Dan ! I'm with you on the card, love the action of him jumping up against the wall for the ball. Way cool!!

First few words are copied and pasted from the FB forum, sorry.
Just got back from vacation. I go to the same place every August and there's a card shop nearby, run by an older guy out of his house. My boys and I always visit and my favorite thing to do is sift through his "M.A.S.H. Box." It's full of beaters, but priced accordingly, with lots of star power. It's a fun escape from graded cards, which are mostly what I collect these days. Notes below each photo. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...T%20Jensen.jpg Of my new additions, I'm most excited about the card above. For a few weeks now, I've had the itch to add my first 52 Topps. Don't know why one hadn't fallen into my lap before now. Happy to add this Jensen. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0baseball3.jpg Already had a nicer copy of the Piersall and didn't realize it. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0baseball4.jpg Bill White is a personal favorite. Possibly the most underrated player of the 60's. Got these 4 cards for a total of $3 http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0baseball5.jpg I also love vintage league leader cards when they're chock full of HOFers. Got these 5 cards for $3 http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...oggs%20lot.jpg Love Kellogg's cards and thought it was interesting that these weren't "3D". Turns out this was the only year Kellogg's didn't use that effect, because they went with a different manufacturer (Panographics). These were 20 cents each. Like I said, it's fun sometimes to throw condition out the window and buy cheap copies of iconic cards or iconic players. |

Sure glad I was able to win it despite telling myself to curb my spending! I had looked, (although it's not one of my current priority 52 Topps cards) at Dimaggio cards before and always thought, someday I'll get one, just not now. Just happened to be surfing E-Bay when I noticed it, threw in a bid, got outbid, threw in another or 2 and ended up winning it, surprisingly. :) Nice Jack Jensen, btw. That is another card I have been eyeing. (Yankee cards always carry a premium) Quote:

Hit a cool milestone yesterday with the day's mail...got this 69 Topps Fergie that completes my 3rd 1969 Topps set. In my quest to upgrade my first set I was able to put together another VGEX set, and then the quest to upgrade that set let to another VG set..:D This Fergie (after I freed it from the PSA bondage) replaces the card in my 2nd set which dropped that card to my 3rd set which is now COMPLETE.
http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Hu8AAO...nK/s-l1600.jpg My only question now is do I upgrade my 2nd set to EXNM and create a 4th set? My wife thinks I'm crazy but I have to believe I have folks here that quite understand... |
