Grading Company's incorrect dating of the 1949 LEAF cards
OK guys, here I go again in my criticism of PSA, SGC, etc. because of their wrong dates on their flips regarding the 1949 LEAF cards.
But, I do salute PSA and SGC for getting it right on the 1949 LEAF Premiums. Most of us (old dudes) who were lucky enough to collect these cards in 1949 remember that these HOFer picture premiums were included in the 24-count wax-pack boxes. There is absolutely no doubt that the Premiums were issued simultaneously with the cards. So, can any of you explain this contradiction. Why do the Premiums' flips have a 1949 date, while the BB cards' flips have "fictitious" dates ? SGC identifies these cards as 1948-1949, I don't know how Beckett dates them, and PSA is totally incorrect with their 1948 date........ http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...tBluexBlue.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...BabeRuth50.jpg . . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...iumGehrigX.jpg TED Z . |

What a set!

Can you name any other set that has DiMaggio, Ruth, Musial, Williams, Paige and Robinson in it? Lucky if you can get 3 out of the 6 in the same set.
Oddly for Seerey, Platt and Weigel it was their one and only time on cardboard. Aberson, I believe can also be added to the "one time only" list. |
Thanks, Steve. :)
Nice Leaf lineups there, Jason and Mike! |
1949 LEAF BB cards & Premiums
Hey guys,
Approx. 50 posts (to date) displaying a variety of 1949 LEAF BB cards in this thread. I really appreciate all of your responses. Let's see some more. I realize most of you on this forum are into graded cards. And, that's fine. I prefer to collect these cards in their original form. Just as I did as a kid. The 101 cards in my 1st LEAF set are in Hi-Quality Mylar. Sixty-two of the 74 cards in my 2nd set are also in Mylar. These 12 displayed here are the last remaining graded cards in my LEAF collection. Eventually, I will free them from their hard plastic capsules and let them "breathe" :) http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...rResTru50x.jpg . . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...lAdaMur50x.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...rGorFel50x.jpg >> Feller back >> http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...xFeller27b.jpg TED Z . |

Short-Print series......
It looks this thread is winding down. But, before it fades away onto page 2, it would be nice to have displayed all the 2nd series short-print cards,
since these cards are not often seen. So far, we have already posted about 1/2 of the 49 cards in this series. Therefore, here are 9 more...... http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...GrJoHuHo25.jpg Incidentally......the Orval Grove bio is one of several bios in this set that reinforces the fact that the 1949 LEAF cards were never issued in 1948. This card mentions the trade of Early Wynn from Washington to Cleveland on Dec 14, 1948. TED Z . |
1949 LEAF BB cards vs Premiums

I reiterate....Can any of you explain this contradiction. Why are the Premiums' flips correctly dated 1949....while the BB cards' flips have "fictitious" dates ? TED Z . |
Before this thread fades away....I thought it would be nice to have displayed all the 2nd series short-print cards, since these cards are not often seen.
So far, we have posted about 1/2 of the 49 cards in this series. In post #89, I added 9 new short-prints. And, here is another group of short-prints.... http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...SpSwWaZa25.jpg One more group to complete this series of 49 short-prints will be posted later. TED Z . |

I just wanted to publicly thank Ted Z for starting this thread and all the great information provided about this set. I only have two from the set but my Musial is easily in my top five favorite cards I own.
If anyone else has other info, printing anomalies, or just addition cards to show please do. Thanks again Ted for making this post war collector visit the prewar side a bit more over the last few weeks.:) Drew (Already shown but why not?) |
Hi Drew
I appreciate your very kind words. And, I am glad this thread got you to check-out the pre-war side of this forum. I debated whether to post this thread here, or in the post-war section. I felt that the historic significance of the 1949 LEAF's, being the 1st major colorized BB card set since 1941, warranted higher exposure. I'm very pleased with the enthusiastic responses here. Anyhow, I think you will be adding some more 1949 LEAF's to your collection. TED Z . |

A brief retrospective on the LEAF GUM Co. (1948 - 1949)
Here are some recollections regarding the LEAF GUM cards from my youth.
Early in 1948, the first cards marketed by LEAF were Pirates of the Seas cards with a 1" x 2" stick of Bubble gum in 1-cent wax-packs. These cards are very tough to find; and, very seldom seen. In 1948, LEAF issued their ALL-STAR FOOTBALL GUM set comprising of 98 cards, issued in two 49-card series. Jackie Jensen's rookie card is in the tougher Hi # series. A tremendous FB and BB athlete, Jackie decided in favor of BB when he signed with the Oakland Oaks of the PCL in 1949. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ieJensen25.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...eJensen25b.jpg In the Fall of 1948, LEAF introduced their KNOCK-OUT BUBBLE GUM set (49 cards + Rocky Graziano). These cards were very popular. And, due to high demand, LEAF ran additional press runs of them in early 1949 (gray cardboard versions). 1948 was the 3rd meeting of the famous Rocky Graziano vs Tony Zale fights of that era. Zale knocked out Graziano in this 3rd match-up, winning 2 of the 3 fights. The Graziano card is extremely rare. Supposedly, Rocky did not like his picture and had LEAF remove his card. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ZaleZale25.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...1949Zale18.jpg 1948 issue .................................................. ....... 1949 issue LEAF issued the 1st series (49 cards) of their ALL-STAR BASEBALL GUM in early Spring of 1949. And, issued the 2nd series (49 cards) in limited distribution during the Summer of 1949. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...DiMaggio25.jpg.http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...iMaggio25b.jpg ALL-STAR FOOTBALL GUM issued in 1949 (49 cards). http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...nyLujack25.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...yLujack25b.jpg Hey guys....I don't think this show is over, yet. So, let's see some more of your LEAF cards. TED Z . |
I have no Leaf's to share but want to give a thanks for sharing firsthand knowledge of some almost prewar cards. :)

Just thought I'd add my uncut sheet of 1948 LEAF boxing cards to illustrate the format of how the LEAF GUM Co.
printed all their sports cards (1948-1949). http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...9cardsheet.jpg And, here is an old B/W photo of an uncut sheet of the 1st series of the 1949 BB cards. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...eries1x50x.jpg TED Z . |
1949 LEAF BB cards with wrong-backs
Complementary pair of wrong backs from my 1949 LEAF set.
These inverted backs on the cards in 2nd (scarce) series tells us that the printer simply ran the pre-printed 49-card sheets (of fronts) in reverse when doing the back run. I've never seen 1st series wrong-backs from this set. Anyhow, if you have 1949 LEAF wrong-backs, please post them here.....Thanks. .http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...idGordonWB.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...dGordonWBk.jpg TED Z . |

It's all a matter of "relativity"....you consider this vintage card of Ruth "overpriced"....however, when compared with his Goudey cards (or earlier cards), it is reasonably priced. Ruth is Ruth, and most collectors want an old card of him. 1949 Leaf BB cards....show us your Leaf's
I am reprising this thread as it illustrates a rich amount of LEAF cards on display.
Especially all the 2nd Series (short-prints)....which are very seldom seen. And, many of my color variations. Plus, Mike Ryan's (long-time 1949 LEAF BB collector) beautiful cards. After all is said and done.....pictures are always worth a "1000 words" :) TED Z T206 Reference . |

What a wonderful thread -- a trip down Net54 memory lane!
Even more impressed with the cards in this thread with the passage of time. My own Leaf run from earlier in the thread has rounded out a bit now. Many thanks to the board members who helped along the way. The Jackie and Ruth were actually two of my very first cards bought via Net54, and I am still very grateful to the sellers! Great memories. Not a set I collect, but a cool thread. I have a handful of Leaf cards, including these two misfits. Can anyone offer a good explanation with what is going on with them? Harris has a really dark area below his mouth that looks like a beard (not ink on card), and the Evans has registration issues that caused the weird border overlap on the left side?
