Negro Leagues
I thought that the Rube Foster cabinet photo went for a healthy price given the state of the Negro League market these days. Also, thought that the '52 Xalapa team photo w/Dihigo & Buck Leonard was quite a bargain for someone......

Of the only 24 cards listed and shown, really only need this fellow :) Attachment 229620 Going to be FUN opening and seeing what the other  115 cards look like. Decent (good) price, and it'll keep off the streets for a while ....... Great stuff, Scott |

Sam nice pick up of the CJ Lajoie! and Blair that jersey if freikin awesome! You gotta take some pictures when you put it on.
Does anyone know who won the A.J. Reach tin advertising sign? I thought it was the one of the coolest items in the whole shebang. And at $45k one of the priciest! I was able to finish my '14 CJ set by locking down the JJ! and decided to upgrade my favorite all-time card to this PSA 5 Cobb. Won some upgrades to my CJ set and a nice T206 Cobb Red and #181 Goudey Ruth. My favorite item of the night though was the type I photo of Tris Speaker with his trademark sneer. |
I am having some remorse. I thought long and hard about the 33 Delong Lionel Carter set. I know that I can get a 33 Delong set in the future, but I doubt I will ever be able to get that set! It went for 5 grand + 1 grand BP. I stopped at 4 grand. It was at $4,750 last night and had been there for a while. It went up only $250. I woke up early this morning for the 1/2 Marathon and the auction hadn't closed yet. I am getting ready to buy a motorcycle this month, so my wife and I agreed that it was an either/or proposition. At breakfast, I thought that I am pretty deep into my 54, 55, and 56 sets with each probably pushing 5-6k with the number of grade 6 & 7 superstars and HOFers. I don't want to sell them, but I knew that I could get them again - but I would not be able to get Carter's Delongs. So, I had a quick conversation with the Mrs about using consignment credit for the sake of making one final push (I would pay up front, but the understanding was that I would consign in the fall and reimburse the account). I would then make whatever set I sold be my next project and start again.
I got the head nod, was getting ready to make one final push as I had gotten final warning. I popped open the computer and it had just closed. Maybe 5250 or 5500 doesn't get it, but I am going to wish I pulled the trigger... |

Example from this REA auction: I already have a N28 Ward & a N162 Kelly, but I was looking to upgrade as I prefer all my cards to be in at least EX grade (my Ward is a PSA-4 and Kelly SGC-40). I got the REA Ward SGC-80 for $60 less than I had figured to spend, but the PSA-5 Kelly went above my limit of 4250 + 850= 5100. The hammer price at 5K to become 6K altogether, which was $900 more than I was willing to go...and I thought I would be overpaying at that. Again, I was fully prepared for the premium, it just keeps me from getting my upgrade. If the same card had shown up on Ebay, I may have been able to afford it...of course the other side of the argument is that since nobody would be paying the premium, they could all spend more and the same final price may very well be the result. Perhaps I would have considered laying out more if this was not just an upgrade situation. -Raymond |

Thanks for the nice words! I'll do that for sure. You scored big-time in this auction - way to go on the 1914 CJs! Great, great stuff. Cheers, Blair |

Does anyone know who got the T206 M. Brown/ BL 460? I really wanted it, but at $24,000 I couldn't compete. :(
Maybe David Hall? Just curious. |
AJ- Huge night! Congrats

I told this story to my current girlfriend. We met in 2005. She always says that if she had been there, she would have helped me, and we couldhave gotten a Wagner. Except for this: I found out that the winner of that card was Keith Olberrman. I could have made multiple bids, and he still would have beat me. So maybe you would have gotten them with one more bid, and maybe not. Could be someone wanted them much more that you did. Lets hope that you get another chance soon. :) |
A.J., great going. You finished the 1914 CJ set? Even the Mathewson? That really is something.

Ruth RC
Lol Pete!! Just had my third son this past Wednesday. So, my plan was for each of them to have a Ruth RC. With the prices escalating recently, I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull one off. Thankfully, the timing worked out well.

It was a big night for me; I won three cards: Lot 77 (Old Judge - Burdock), Lot 243 (Close Candy - Speaker), and Lot 257 (Briggs - McConnell). I was the under-bidder on the Kid Nichols Mayo Cut Plug card.
|
I picked up another Kbat, this one of Al Maul. Really love that set.

Reeled in a MINO and also snagged the J Wood Studio Esterbrook. Almost, but backed away from all the T214's and T215's...I thought the Orange Borders box and the Cameo Pepsins were good deals, but did not have those on my bidder card...Rob

I was an under bidder on the Esterbrook. |
I won the 1914 CJ WaJo PSA 2 for more than I wanted to spend; the Oxford Confectionary WaJo PSA 2 at a decent price; the PSA 3 N172 Sam Thompson Philadelphia card; and the 1952 Xalapa Mexican League team photo with Dihigo and Buck Leonard from Dihigo's collection. I really wanted the Rube Foster photo but just couldn't seem to pull the trigger again.

Nice one, that is sharp for a Mino. I considered Collins as I don't yet have a Mino and that is a HOFer in excellent condition, but I decided to wait to fight another day - I am glad I didn't bid you up!

Bryan, yeah I thought it was in nice shape for a T216. I also had some bids in on the T216 Lajoie. Did you win anything at REA or just waiting for Heritage? |

I am really excited about winning the T215-2 Walter Johnson -- having obtained the P42 earlier this year, I have now completed what I perceive to be the closest I'll get to a back run on the hands-at-chest pose!
(I have never spoken to anyone who has seen or heard of the T215-1, so I'm not sure it exists, despite its inclusion on the checklists.) I've updated my graphic in celebration. Cheers, Steve |
Congrats Steve! Would love to see a lineup of them.

I know the feeling. Back in 2003, I was the underbidder on a T206 Plank on ebay. I bid $16,100, and it went for $16,200. I know I probably wouldn't've won it at $16,300, but it still hurts, as I'll undoubtedly never again have the chance at a Plank. Steve |
Congratulations to all the winners, especially A.J. and Pete on the Cracker Jacks and Ruth RC!

Fantastic pickups, everyone!
This is my first REA win, and these two cards once resided in Jim Blumenthal's amazing collection. http://i.imgur.com/yIKoTKR.jpg |

I was able to win the Orange Border T210 set. I only needed two for completion and after I mix and match with my current OB's I will be able to put a nice grade set together. Ill post a thread once I have them in hand. I really wanted the pair of E222's but couldnt pull the trigger. If either owner ever looks to move them please keep me in mind. Great pickups everyone.

Could anyone tell me how to 'cut and copy' the cards I won? - from the REA website, I mean.
Thanks |

I just drag the image to my desktop and then link it in my thread post .
|
Drag the small image to the edge of the screen. That then brings up a link where the image can be copied by the usual method.

and don't forget to look at the HugginsScott preview--I just scrolled thru tons of vintage cards and including some hard backs (brown lenox and Am.beauty460) There tons of sets in this one. I got my eyes on 3 lots already there. http://www.hugginsandscott.com/cgi-b...lery.pl?mode=b |

Congrats Jason on the Set! The condition of the T210 OB set is off the charts. |
Landed a couple that I hoped other bidders might not focus on (sure) and went over budget, but what's new. Wonder if this auction will be the last one conducted by Rob Lifson. Somehow I just can't see him just walking him away completely and leaving it to his colleagues at REA. I did land:
1. N162 Goodwin's Keefe 2. D359 Livingston Williams Baking 3. E145 1914 McGraw 4. E126 Walter Johnson 5. '34 R320 Greenberg and Appling (been after a nice copy of Hank's RC and this one fit the bill. Tough and popular card.) 6. N172 Clarkson BVG 6.5 - thought this was my hope for some kind of bargain and snagged it during after hours bidding when I was cross-eyed from fatigue. What will I do for excitement now? Mile High is still running, and I hope I am not remiss in mentioning two cards I have consigned that I think offer some value, the T206 Cobby green PSA VG 3, where the obverse is just beautiful, and the E92 Nadja Wagner batting PSA Vg 3, which I believe I am correct in saying that it is the only batting pose graded by any TPG company. Nadja's, for those who collect them, can be tough for the HOF'ers not playing for St. Louis. This card does not come around very often. John (Leon, I hope it all right to do a bit of hyping. If not I will retract.) |
After much thought, I decided to go after the Rube Foster cabinet. I want to congratulate & apologize at the same time to the winner. I have no idea what his/her high bid was, but sadly it was beyond mine. Congrats!

Congrats to all the REA winners - lots of fantastic items in this thread! I batted .222 (i.e., 2 for 9), picking up this N690 Kalamazoo Bats (I had to get one with an ad back) and this Leader Theatre for my type collection:
