Really fun to see all these great cards. Had been offline a few weeks with some medical issues but still hoping to reel something in before month's end.

Was a crazy month. Docs thought I had pneumonia, which was unpleasant enough. But when I woke up ten days later barely able to breathe, I found out I had a massive bilateral pulmonary embolism. Still here so can't complain, but full recovery will be slow.

Second that! My '56 Mantle is centered just as well...but would not be a 5. [emoji3] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Nice cards everyone!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Jason! |
Not sure why I thought I needed this but I'm glad I did. I don't particularly collect Yankees or Ruth but I can't resist oddball pieces.

Glad to be back on the scoreboard. Another for my Top 100 display. Let me know if you can tell from the scan why the grade is so low. My eyes aren't great, but I thought the card looked pretty good.

Jason, glad to see you back. Recovery can be a slow, arduous task. Take it one day at a time, and know we're all pulling for you. :)
Some beautiful cards as always, guys. |
1952 Wheaties metal trays, not cards but thought they would be appreciated posted here.

Nice Musial. Don't know that I've ever seen that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Jerry, your Wheaties trays are simply beautiful. How were they available at the time the cereal company issued them? I don't have a Krause Standard Cat in arm's reach at the moment.
Regardless, dazzling pickup. Congrats. For what it's worth, that Musial outshines all of Stan the Man's cards. What a radiant pose--perfection!:D --Brian Powell |

They were attached to the back of wheaties boxes in 1952 as a premium. Far as I can tell there was just 4 different trays issued, these 3 plus a Jackie Robinson which is by far and away the highest valued. The musial is my favorite also. |

Also, as others have mentioned the Musial is very nice; I like the other two, but the Musial is classic. |
Jerry, I should have mentioned this in my initial thread to you. I really like your use of the small easels to display them. Great idea.
I do know for a fact that the Jackie Robinson tray uses a beautiful photograph by the legendary Ozzie Sweet, SPORT magazine's best photographer for many years. Thanks for enlightening us about how the trays were offered by Wheaties. Wow. That's the key for these as conversation pieces. I hope the stock boy was extra careful when he unpacked the cases and set the boxes with the trays on the grocery store shelf. Can you say, inherent condition sensitivity?:D ---Brian Powell |

92 down, 8 to go for my Top 100 Display. Have really developed a liking for this 1939 Play Ball set. Along with Big Poison below, have relied on the same set for Arky Vaughan, Joe DiMaggio, and Bill Dickey.
The odd shape is a relic of the photo...expecting card to be much more rectangular when it arrives. Attachment 224988 |

Not only does the footage show Ducky hitting it into the seats but it also shows four of Hubbell's five consecutive strikeouts. No sound, but otherwise really fantastic. |

Unfortunately mine is so trashed I don't think it would qualify. Agree with you on the set though. I might make a run next year at getting into the Diamond Stars. Their artistic quality is fantastic with that 1930's style, Art Deco or whatever it was. They are very under appreciated too, at least in comparison to Goudey or Playball cards. They came out right about the time the movie "The Natural" is supposed to be set in in the late '30s. Too bad there is not a Diamond Stars Roy Hobbs...
|
I think the lack of Ruth and Gehrig hurts the set too, but it also makes it (relatively) affordable. I love just about all the HOF cards in the set, though the Jimmie Foxx as catcher takes some getting used to.

Received these today.
I am trying to collect some low cost 52's, and happened to see the Walker Cooper card searching, which I thought would be pretty cool as my son is also named Walker. While looking further, I also noticed his first name is William, just like my son and just like my son, he used his middle name as his primary name. I showed my wife and son, and both thought it would be a really cool card to own. I knew my son would be into me purchasing it, but I was surprised my wife also said the same! :D I also received the "Irv" Noren card, which was chosen for obvious reason. ;) I would still like to purchase a PSA (4-8) Walker Cooper copy as well as I am not sure this copy is worthy, and I nor my son ever plan on selling it. |

And with this I complete my Post War HOF rookie collection. Maybe a few upgrades will happen for me over the next few years but it was nice to land the final card I needed this week. Completed the heirloom (in its current incarnation) two weeks before our baby is due!

BK picked a great year to give whole cards to the Tigers rooks. Do you know if they did other teams also...eg 1978 Molitor or 1977/1978 Dale Murphy?

Quick question that I couldn't solve via Google. O/T for our pickup thread but I know one of you will have a quick answer.
A term I see on N54 a lot is "Type Card" but I don't know what it means. Lemme know. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk |
I think the term "type card" would be defined as any card within a collection of different issues, years, teams, etc. Each one is it's own type.
I know many collect players from a certain team, and like to get a card from every issue known. When adding a 1952 Topps or a 1932 US Caramel to a Phillies set, for example, they are adding a "type card" to that collection. |
Right or wrong, I tend to lump Al Simmons and Chuck Klein together, so I decided a while back to get cards of each of them for my Top 100 display from the same set--1933 DeLong. A N54 member gave me a terrific deal on Simmons, but I struggled to find an affordable Klein with good centering and color.
After much searching and losing out on a PWCC auction, I finally bit the bullet. And shown with it is my Simmons from last year. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...8886e85817.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...db3204bc16.jpg 93 down...7 more to go! |
