All of these were taken at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. All were taken down at Darling Harbour. This was a gathering area near downtown. There were two fireworks shows there every night. Coca Cola radio was set up there (small studios set up for any radio station from around the world to use). This is also where they held boxing, fencing, judo, weightlifting, wrestling and volleyball.

I could always show a photo of me and Todd Frazier...
https://live.staticflickr.com/4632/3...4ca6ee45_b.jpg ...or a photo of me with the great Pete Alonso, who's so awesome he can hit a grand slam with the bases empty... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1a9ed7fb_c.jpg ...but since someone else posted a photo with Mr. Met, I wanted to share one of my favorite photos of me and baseball's best mascot. It's a photo with a story, and there's even a memorabilia aspect. The premise: on 9/17/22, the Mets gave away bobbheleads of broadcaster Gary Cohen. I offered to trade mine to Mr. Met in exchange for his cap. Mr. Met was all set to make the swap, but Mrs. Met said "NO DEAL!" with a mighty thumbs down. Oh well. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6967e9a5_c.jpg |

pitched by then Memphis Redbird Adam Wainwright at a game versus the Omaha Royals at Rosenblatt Stadium in 2005. Royals catcher Scott Walters was the batter. I’ve held on to it since then, hoping someday to get Adam’s signature on the ball. Finally happened at an event benefiting his Big League Impact foundation. I’m one happy Cardinals fan.

Me and Steve at the airport in SLC. You can tell it’s him because of the distance between his eyes and the shape and position of his ears.
We were on the same flight from SFO to SLC. August 1998. This was back when planes weren’t always full - trust me, it used to happen once upon a time. Some little kid took my assigned seat, so I took the row behind. Just before they were about to close the doors, Steve slipped in and sat down next to me. We spent the next couple of hours chatting about the upcoming season (he didn’t seem to think they were going to be that dominant), my “run and gun” poster of him that I had hanging up in my childhood bedroom, whether he had a hot date that night (he didn’t), and my experience being a missionary in Taiwan - I had just returned home about 5 months before. Then he signed a barf bag for my little brother, who suffers from the world’s most sensitive case of motion sickness, and signed my ticket sleeve for me. We walked through the SLC airport together, and I flagged down a fellow fan who took this picture of us together on the escalator. The photographer was standing on the lower part of the escalator looking up at us, while we were facing backwards riding up the escalator, which is why the photo has such a great upward angle. |

Here is a picture with not just a sports figure but my all time favorite sports hero. The first photo was taken when when went to one of Harmon's signings in Sioux Falls, South Dakota some 25 years ago. The kids are my two oldest kids and of course they are all grown up now. The second photo is the photograph I had him sign. He was interested in the photograph and asked me what I did for living? When I told him I was a teacher/coach he asked if we wanted to sit down afterwards at the concession area for a coffee . Who does that, what a great person!! We talked about the photo and he asked me if I knew who he was shaking hands with at the time and I responded, Bobby Allison, I believe. He responded that is correct. He asked me where I got the photo, since has remembered the moment but had never seen the photo. I told him I purchased it online and gave him the info. I offered the photo to him to have but he said, No! hang it up in your wall, so it has been there even since. He asked what I taught and coached and we visited for 15 to 20 minutes. This is certainly the high point of my collecting. He was the most generous, nice man and left and endless impression on both me and my kids. The Killer was not a killer in person but more of a Harmless Harmon who was just a great role model. |

At the age of 13, I got to visit Cooperstown for the 1973 inauguration of Harry Hooper, Early Wynn, Sandy Koufax, Buck Leonard and Yogi Berra. The all signed a baseball for me, but I played with it to the point that all of the signatures got super faded. Then I tried to write over them with my Bic ball point pen! Geesh, what a dummy!

My partners and I used to run card shows in the suburban Chicago area in the 80's and 90's and with each show we would bring in a local athlete to sign free autographs. I had been in touch with Heisman trophy winner Johnny Lattner and he agreed to be our guest one fall Sunday afternoon. I knew the pre-arranged time was getting close for his signing and was on the lookout for Mr. Lattner when I heard may name called out from across the center of the mall. I turned to see Mr. Lattner pushing a shopping cart which I thought was a bit odd. As I got closer I stopped in my tracks and realized that the reason he was pushing a shopping cart was because the Heisman was sitting in it. I stood dumbfounded just staring at the trophy and Mr. Lattner casually mentioned to me that he thought people would like to see it so he brough the Heisman with him. We had never discussed this possibility but yet, there it was...THE Heisman.
To say this was a huge hit with all those who were attending would be an understatement. I am the big guy on the right who stupidly never got a picture of myself holding this 45 pound sculpture but it was so very cool to see and hold it in person. |
