Just got a few more in. I also posted the Pittsburgh Exhibits in a "January Pickups" thread. The 1972 Reggie Jackson In Action cards are not really Aaron cards, but I never noticed what was on the back.

Actually, at this time, I'm trying to avoid anything too large to get slabbed. I've got a few 8 x 10's and quite a few wire photos, but I'm trying to focus on cards right now. I just picked up PSA graded examples of both variations of the 1968 Topps Milton Bradley #107 checklists for my Aaron checklist run and a 1971 complete Bazooka box.

I got a few more for my run of Aaron checklists (checklists that have Aaron's basic cards). The Milton Bradley checklists were a little tough to find. I did not even know about the 1972 Cloth Stickers checklist until recently.

Thanks, everyone. I should have some more pics soon. I've got 50 more cards at PSA - I'll post them as soon as PSA decides what "50 days" really means. I'm also redoing my office. I got some more really nice items and had to put in a few more shelves.

Since it seems like it will be near the end of April before I get anything back from PSA and I finished up the changes in my office, I decided to post some new pics here, even though this thread is in a a card forum. Sorry about the not so great photos; I really need to upgrade my camera. The pics go more or less from left to right around the room. Pic #2 has two new bats on top - a 3000 hit bat and a NL MVP's bat. Pic #3 (sorry about the glare) shows the signed helmet, cleat, and glove that I just picked up. Pic #6, middle row, shows some signed ball with Aaron in the inscriptions - Billingham/HR#714, Downing/HR#715, Drago/HR#755, Lum/1'st pinchhitter, and May/traded for Aaron. The last pic is really off topic! It's signed Redskins mini helmets from the Super Bowl XVII winning team. I hope to have some scans of graded cards soon!

It's been really tough finding new, affordable Aaron cards. Since it seems it might be a while before I get anything back from PSA, here is a pic of one new Aaron card. It's a 1975 Brewers team checklist hand cut from sheet.

pony cleat is super cool.

Fantastic! I too collect Aaron though not as comprehensively. There are lots of regionals and oddball item you can go after next if you are running out of challenges.

KCRfan1 04-28-2016 07:29 AM

Robert, that's an amazing collection you've put together! Have you reached out to Aaron to let him know about your collection?

Mark70Z 04-28-2016 05:22 PM

Robert,

Thanks so much for the pictures of the room. The way you have your Aaron items displayed is very nice. I particularly like the barrister bookcases that you have items displayed in; makes for a great display.

I saved what I thought was best for last. The 76 Parker is one of four graded by PSA. The Birthday Stamp panel is the only one graded by PSA. Also, PSA has only graded 3 other individual stamps. I had originally planned to separate the Aarons out, but I discovered that the panel was small enough to get graded. The '69 MLB Photostamps are Type 2. I was also planning to cut up this panel until I noticed the other players on it. It is also the only one PSA has graded.

Robert,

Really like the Aaron collection. Especially enjoy the picture pack type photo's as well as some of the odd-ball items that you have obtained. Really sets it off with the PSA slabs as well.

Thanks for taking the time to share pictures of your collection.

Jason,
Thanks. I pre-ordered one off ebay and got it the week after the game. I did notice one thing though. The ads showed Hank with gray hair, but the bobblehead I got had black hair - but not really a problem. Here it is in my showcase.

Just picked up this '73 Topps Pin-up. I really wish I had bought the one years ago that was offered to me for $200; this one cost a little bit more. I get all my Aarons slabbed, but now I have to decide which company. PSA would probably be better for value in the long run, but I already have a '73 Comic in a SGC holder.

Neal 06-19-2016 05:30 PM

Nice stuff fellas!

Mark70Z 06-20-2016 03:47 PM

Pin Up

I think that the '73 Aaron pinup would look great in either holder. If you have one in a SGC holder might as well get one in a PSA holder, but I don't think you can go wrong either way.

jason.1969 06-25-2016 07:11 AM

Question the guys on this thread might have an answer for.

I noticed that the 1977 TCMA is part of the Hank Aaron Master Set. It would make sense to me were the TCMA a set of contemporary players and the Aaron card showed him on the Brewers. However, given that Aaron is shown as a Milwaukee Brave and the other cards in the set are retired players, its inclusion seems odd to me.

Is it just automatic that any card issued the year after a guy's final season qualifies as Master Set? Or is a judgment call?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

RobertC 06-25-2016 09:37 AM

Sometimes I wonder why PSA includes a card in the registry. Trying to figure out PSA's "logic" can give you a headache. It might be just to have another card to grade. For example, the Action Cartridge hand-cut "card" and the Transogram side panels were never intended to be separate "cards", but PSA still includes them in the Aaron master set. Why is it that the Plaks checklist is included, but no other checklists (except for team checklists)? Maybe because the Plaks checklist is an expensive card to grade. I do not mean to bust on PSA, because I do use their Aaron master list as a important reference, but sometimes they make you wonder.

Looks like a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Vet.

This is a great thread. Congratulations.

I may not have been paying full attention on the bats, but top to bottom:

1) LS 3000 hit;
2) LS NL MVP;
3) LS HOF Induction brown bat;
4) LS 57 WS black bat;
5) ???;
6) Magnavox 715 commemorative?;
7) LS 715 commemorative?

You know there would be a LS 58 NL Champions black bat, too?

Because the Plaks checklist pictures him. That their standard and they're pretty consistent with it. All the 68 Topps CL's picturing players count for those registries, like Marichal and Yaz.

#5 bat is the LS 1976 Bicentennial bat (has the Liberty Bell). #6 is the "very rare" Magnavox bat :D. I just added another bat on top - A silver Rawlings 715 Commemorative. I know about the 58 NL Champs bat, but the only one I've seen was priced a lot more than I want to spend.

I saw the list...a couple tough cards to find... others shouldn't be that hard to find(OPC).
I had one of the list but not ready to part with it. I will keep you in mind when I am ready to sell.

I always felt the 56 salesman sample is a great card. Very hard to find. That and the 59 Bazooka are my favorites.

Some new additions. The first is a 1976 Bob Parker More Baseball Cartoons checklist. Second is a 1974 Deckle Edge proof (straight edge, white back). Next is a Finnish Sportscaster Rules, then a Swedish Sportscaster Rules. The last two are PWCC pickups (reasonable prices!).

Robert,

So you picked up the white back proof?!? Do you have the white back deckle as well? I'm still missing the white back for my Brooks collection; tough to find.

RobertC 10-02-2016 05:09 PM

I found the white back proof on ebay. It was listed at too high of a price at first, but kept getting lower each time it got relisted. It finally came down to the price I had in mind, so I bought it. I don't have the white back deckle edge Aaron; I don't remember ever seeing one. Just another card I'm still looking for.

I've picked up a few cards in the last few months, so I thought I'd update this thread. Here's two '70 Super color proofs, a '70 Braves Stamps panel, a '70 Topps Candy Lid, a '69 Transogram top panel, and a '55 Yellow Basepaths pin. I've been looking for the candy lid for quite a while. I have doubts about whether or not the handcut Transogram should be considered a real card, but PSA does grade them. I am a little concerned about the pin, since I picked it up for really cheap. I guess I'll find out when I send it in to PSA.

"Blue" Aaron

1 Attachment(s)
I picked up this 1958 "blue" Aaron. There was another thread where this exact card was mentioned. I knew exactly what this card was when I bought it, It was a faded 1958. I wanted one like it, but I did not want one that I knew had been purposely faded. This one shows green where a price sticker was probably once attached. I do not believe someone would leave a spot of green on purpose and hope it was just accidental. Nevertheless, it's something I wanted, but did not want to spend a lot on.

One final post for today. I've been changing my home office around. I thought I'd show one completed wall. I was tired of not being able to see my cards and having to get them out of secure storage to look at them. I decided to get wall display cases for graded cards and jerseys. I was really disappointed with the card case; it was advertised as holding 35 graded cards, but only holds 30 SGC cases. I would like to have shown more. I am really proud of the fact that the most I spent on any card shown was $200 for the rookie. Low to mid grade cards are the most fun!

DBesse27 02-04-2017 11:41 AM

You're the one who got that Venz marichal CL with wrong back! I collect 68 Venz and thought it was interesting, but my conservative snipe of $50 was blown out of the water.

I really admire your collection. Forgive me if it's been answered here and I missed it, but do you know why Aaron isn't included in the 1963 Fleer set or any of the Kellogg's 3-D sets? And why didn't Topps make a deckle-edge card of him in 1969? This is the kind of stuff I've wondered about for a long time.

I've got one. I have several tubs of newer cards, etc., in storage. My office is only 12 x 12, so I'm limited on space. I am redoing one wall now with the main part of my display. As soon as I get in some more nameplates I will finish it up and post some pictures.

I've wondered about this, too. I don't really know why Aaron wasn't included. You have a nice display. I was really lucky to get my Aaron basic Topps cards before they started rising in price. I really like low to mid grades too. I buy the card, not the grade. The worst thing I can see in an ad for a graded card is "highest graded" or "only one graded higher."

The 1963 Fleer set (as we know it) was really just the start of the set, the first series or what not, before it went kaput. That's why it only contains 66 or 67 cards. Hammerin' Hank would've been included in the set if it reached fruition with all series eventually released.

Finished up one section of wall above my desk. Not cards, but signed balls from players, etc. at important times in Aaron's career. Some were easy, some were really tough. The research was a lot of fun, though. There are still a few I'd like to get.
