I never post my pickups here because quite frankly I feel a it intimidated by most of the high grade cards. I am a collectors collector. I enjoy the beaters with good eye appeal.
Having said that the card I have been wanting for a very, very long time arrived today. A special thanks to Pete Sycks for working so well with me to make sure I add it to my collection. I was hoping it would be the final card needed for this set completion but it was mailed so fast and I am still waiting on the arrival of a few more from other members as well as an auction site. Now on to my next project.

Here it is. The only 52 Mantle I ever wanted.

drew,

keep posting them! and don't ever feel intimidated. I can sit and look at mantles all day long whether they are 1's or 10's. ironically enough, I sealed a deal with pete on this same card (not exact same, obviously). so far it's been smooth sailing both customer service and price wise!

begsu1013 03-18-2015 06:25 PM

bobc,

I just picked up a raw 47 bond bread berra. didn't pay much for it at all (maybe $30-$40) and was listed as an original, but have you ran into many repro's or have any info to share on this set?

bobc88 03-18-2015 07:48 PM

I'm sure there are others here that know far more about these cards than I do. I believe the square-cornered versions may be of questionable authenticity. I just think the cards are cool and this Feller came at a good price.

Sounds like you should ask the auctionhouse for a real Ryan/Koosman since you don't have a complete set. ;-)

Hey Bob, I mostly collect MLB Player HOF RC's along with autographed baseballs for each. If I get a good deal I'll add a prewar HOF RC now and then. I try to get as many of the possible HOF RC's for each player as I can get. I'm also close to completing a 1969 Topps set.

I just checked out some of your collection, very nice! Especially the Mantle set. Good luck!

begsu1013 03-19-2015 07:40 AM

usps claims "rain, sleet or snow" delivery but doesn't mention anything about having to navigate thru a quarter million drunks. so, st pattys day is pretty big day here in savannah (3rd largest parade, I think) so it pretty much shuts everything down here including the mail.

however, nothing like a nice aaron sandwhich for the hangover!!!

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...psygzov8uk.jpg

Yossarian 03-19-2015 08:51 AM

Bob - nice work on those Aarons. Both look solid for the grade.
While that card has been shooting up in value of late, I still feel there is growth to be had based on Mr. Aaron's place in history, etc.
Also, literally one of my favorite cards from an aesthetic perspective as well - the background orange coupled with the old Braves logo really stands out.

Good job.

(now, i am in search for another low graded exampled to add to my collection).

begsu1013 03-19-2015 01:52 PM

yossarian,

thank you and i totally agree. why the natural all time homerun king's cards are still somewhat low considering puzzles me, i am more than happy to keep picking them up when they are nice and centered, regardless of the grade.

personally to me, i think the 1.5 looks better than the 2.

jason.1969 03-19-2015 02:02 PM

Agree on the Aaron RCs. They do look very nice for their grades, especially the 1.5. To me, Aaron is everything good about baseball--a guy who came from humble beginnings, faced tremendous adversity, persevered, accomplished the impossible, and ultimately used his fame and wealth to create opportunities for others.

bcbgcbrcb 03-19-2015 02:19 PM

I keep hearing the same things about the Aaron RC escalating in price recently but hard to tell from my results. Listed two for sale on Net54, both with near perfect centering, one was a 3.5 and the other was a 4 and I was barely able to squeeze out $800 for the 3.5 and couldn't even get $900 for the 4 and ended up consigning it to an auction house. Like everything else, they will probably escalate once gone from my collection.:D

Nice pick up on the 53 Mantle. Great color and look for a 2. Congrats!
Drew

begsu1013 03-19-2015 06:01 PM

that's a solid 2 mantle! one thing about the 53 (for me, atleast) is the lower left hand corner and how often it gets chipped and turns white. even your's w/ the corner wear doesn't display it which is a good thing, imo. cheers!

to this day, i have still yet to find my 53. it's always centering issues and a good corner or a dead centered one with a chipped up lower left corner.

Other rookies

5 Attachment(s)
I've done pretty well this year with my HOF rookie collection but now I'm starting to get into the high price district as I circle the last 10 I need...so in the meantime, I've had fun reading through Hall of Stats and other sabermetric Bill James-type hall of fames, and players I liked growing up, and have picked up a few (affordable!) rookie cards to feed the addiction. Here are a few I picked up for fun and to add to the rookie pile. Oh, and Kingman is definitely NOT a Hall of Stats guy....I always just used to love his all-power, no average stat lines every year. ANd I realize Stieb is an '80....I'm sneaking him in to the pre-80 board, don't tell anyone. ;)

WillBBC 03-21-2015 11:54 AM

Finally checked this off my list. First card I've purchased in a long while that gave me chills to hold/own. Ha.

WillBBC,
Congrats on the Aaron rookie. I remember when my first Aaron rookie arrived. A good feeling to check that off the list.

bcbgcbrcb 03-21-2015 02:57 PM

I like the rookie cards, Carl.

I started buying up that kind of stuff a couple of years ago since that is what I collected as a kid growing up in the '80's. Unfortunately, while it was a lot of fun while I was buying the rookies in the dime and quarter boxes at card shows, when it came time to sell some to recoup some of my money, I saw the darker side of "investing" in those rookie cards. I quickly found out that nobody really cares about the stars of yesterday unless they are in the HOF. Everything else is literally "a dollar a dozen", pretty much. I don't mean to put a damper on things for you, just don't want you to go down the same road as me and potentially "waste" a lot of money. It's easy to get addicted quite quickly collecting that kind of stuff because you can pick it up so cheap compared to "book price".

Thanks Phil! I appreciate the insight. These particular cards are mostly for fun but it's kind of a shame that players who were merely very good aren't really sought after, but that does keep the prices low. I like having my HOF box and then my fun box of rookies I would have been blown away by when I was a kid.

Thanks again, Phil! It's a blast for sure. Just thinking about what 12 year old me would have thought about having a mint Dave Stieb rookie in 1987 makes it all worth it.

Congratulations, Drew, on finishing your set. And doing so with a '52 Bowman Mantle is going out in real style!

Some real beauties here, guys. I'm enjoying looking at these. Lots of Aarons and Mantles.

Nothing big for me, as I am still in saving mode (well, I dropped about $400 on Blu Ray movies, because I wanted to boost my collection. So I'm not saving everything. :p I should be buying cards again soon).

I did pick up my first 1952 Topps though, a Vern Stephens. And it's a real beauty to me. I think it's my favorite card right now, one because it's a 1952 Topps, and the history of the set is not lost on me. Two, I've been reading quite a lot about Mr. Stephens as of late, so adding this card was a no brainer.

The centering is absolutely magnificent.

http://imageshack.com/a/img661/1821/WrAS31.png

The next card I buy will be from a gentleman I plan on writing about here very soon. Somebody I feel is vastly underappreciated by baseball historians. Within the next week or so, I'll be putting up a discussion about him. But for now, I am going to just enjoy looking at my first '52. I'm transported back to that picture of Woolworth's & Co, with the table setup with the boxes of 1952 Topps.

Clicky goodness

I can't help but wonder if Vern didn't come from one of those boxes. :)

To really appreciate Stephens, take a look at the Top 5 Single Seasons for HRs by a shortstop, pre-Ernie Banks. Pretty cool!

MattyC 03-25-2015 08:38 AM

What a pretty 52 card. The Boggs RC always makes me smile-- love the colors on it and I have a vivid memory of a kid named Andrew in my 1st grade class bringing one in and showing it to me.

Stumbled across this insanely centered Ted Williams last night on eBay. Was priced above all 3s but under the 4s so could not resists, as I have wanted this pair of cards in my collection for a long time.

1941 was one of the coolest seasons in baseball history. "56" and ".406."

That they both achieved those miraculous feats in the same year, and have two beautiful cards in the same set from that very year, representing the two classic divisional rivals, is just so cool. In having our collections tell the story of the game, I think the 41 Play Ball Joe D and Ted cards are up there with having a Shoeless and Cobb, or a Gehrig and Ruth pairing; some players just have entwined legacies.

the 'stache 03-25-2015 10:37 AM

Matt, as strange as it may be, considering how many baseball cards I look at in a given week, I've never seen the Joe D and Teddy Ballgame '41 Play Ball cards together. They're beautiful.

I will own both. Absolutely.

And I'll put them next to these:

http://imageshack.com/a/img537/3249/UCxO91.pnghttp://imageshack.com/a/img537/8366/qIyJP2.png

All sorts of Man Cave thoughts are rushing through my head, guys. :D Baseball on one side, movie memorabilia on the other side, and a home theater system to end them all with black leather studio seating in the middle.

jason.1969 03-25-2015 10:53 AM

Following the Williams/DiMaggio theme, I was at a card show when I was about 15 years old. The dealer had two very old Life magazines for sale, each for the then-unaffordable price of $50 each.

I knew I couldn't get them, but I told myself if I ever made it big, I would track these down and put them in my office. It only took me 30 years!

A couple more RC's today

MattyC 03-25-2015 02:53 PM

The background on the Eck RC shot is another noteworthy detail. Really pleasing to the eye. Reminds me of the background of the 1975 Ryan HL #5, one of my favorite cards ever.

That Fisk is steal of a mint card for an 8.5 price!

I adore both the Joe D and Ted figures and those Life Magazines. What great pairings. The 41 PB's would look awesome next to those!

Stache, glad you dig them as a duo. The Joe D 41PB has always gotten a ton of hobby love but when you add the Ted beside it, it's a case of 1+1 equalling way more than two! In showing them to my son they segue perfectly into a discussion of that amazing historic season for baseball.

Plus the write ups on the card backs are like a time portal to much simpler era. I will try to scan the backs later.

Ben, you nailed it! Some people I know think I collect to hoard what they feel is useless stuff. They always have that "why would you pay money for that piece of cardboard or whatever? " What they don't understand is, as you said, the insight and the passion. When any of you guys or me collects, we are celebrating the game and preserving our country's past. Since the Civil War, baseball 's history walks stride for stride with America. My appreciation for the game and its greats grows every year. I love the nostalgia, the logos, the colors.....all of it.
