nice stuff mike...I love the trade card...no 3 balls and 2 strikes back then for a full count...and love the underhanded "call it where u want it pitched" style of pitching!

This is exactly the right size for an E99, E100, and E221 (folded) to have been distributed in (scanned larger so you can see the writing). A few of the team cards say they were included in 5-cent packages of Bishop's Chocolate, Nut Bar, and Almond Bar.

Thanks for showing this Rhett, it is very cool. How big is it? It doesn't look like it could hold an E221. E221s come with a fold down the middle. I have only seen 1 E221 that was folded multiple times, and that is currently in Leon's collection. I don't think we can know if that was folded at the factory or afterwards.

Dan, it isn't large at about 4" long or so and wide enough for an E99/E100 or regular 1910 era tobacco card to have been in the package. I am unsure what this size chocolate would have cost maybe it was only a penny and the larger bars held the team cards, as some of the team cards specify the 5-cent packages had the team cards. Also, the team cards could have been folded once and then wrapped around the bar as well (like bazooka comics) but it has been years since I have held a Bishop's team card and can't really remember how thick they were and if that was possible ( remember them being pretty thin items). I have seen Leon's multi-fold example and it is my thought that someone after getting the card probably folded it that way to stack with their other Bishop's cards (e99/e100). Regardless of whether the team cards were in this size or a larger size it is safe to assume at least the E99/E100 cards came in this size package.

dstudeba 03-13-2015 04:00 PM

Hi Rhett, thanks for the information, I hadn't thought of wrapping the team card around the chocolate, that is intriguing. The team cards are about the same thickness as the e99/e100s, slightly thinner than a T206.

This came Wednesday. From the research I have done (albeit it may not be as thorough as some) it is the only one I could find in existence. Not sure if this pre-dates his e90-1 or the Colgan Chips, but I think this is the earliest known image of Joe Jackson (bottom right corner) on a "card", per se.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg:

I looked for that W601 w/Jackson for a long time with no luck, it's one of my favorites. I don't mean to scare you but there are a lot of repro's out there of W601's, you might want to check yours closely to make sure that it is authentic. Depending on your source for picking it up, you may not need to worry. I have no reason to think that it's not good, no way to tell from a scan though.

Greg - Beautiful composite! That example is the only 1909 Philadelphia AL team that I have seen. The W601 Team Composites were issued after the end of the season. I would assume that Jackson's E90-1 card was issued sometime during the 1909 season. His Colgan's Chips card was not issued until after he was traded to Cleveland.

None of the Sporting Life Team Composites are easy, but the ones from the later years (1907 on) are extremely difficult to find when compared to their earlier sets (1902-06).

Congrats on a great pickup.

Got a couple cards I've been after for awhile. Super excited about the Joss, and the Brown is deceptively tough. I sold my creased copy over a year ago, and it took me until now to find one in nice condition that wasn't way overpriced.

The Isbell is by far the nicest 2 I've ever seen. I don't really understand how it graded so low, but I love it. Can't stop looking at it.

Nice cards. Esterbrook is an interesting OJ study. He was issued cards in 1886/87, 1888, 1889, & 1890 representing three different teams. His script cards (two cards) show him with the NL New York Giants. Five new poses would surface in 1888 (now w/ Indy) with at least 3/5 poses being re-issued in 1889 with Louisville team update and another 2/5 in 1890 back to the NY Giants. Many of his variations are fairly tough, in fact the OJ book missed your variation (146-7 w/ Indy). That pose can be found in 1888, 1889, & 1890 with all three teams.

Cool piece Brian. Your reference to the business A. Todd,

Thank you for solving that mystery for me because I didn't know if Al Mamaux was related to the business, but did know he was born in Pittsburgh. The piece predates his stint with the Pirates.
