Chris - Congratulations to you and your wife. A pick up to be proud of for sure.
She's adorable. |
MurphUSA - Great graphics on the 1941 Playball pinball glass. It's a beauty.
Terrific trophy too. I'd say you had quite a productive day. |
Congrats Chris! An addition to the family is better than any memorabilia pickup one could offer, hands down.

Anibal Sanchez game used rookie cleats and glove 2006
6 Attachment(s)
Just picked these up from another net54 board member. Thanks Giovanni!
In his 2006 rookie season, Anibal Sanchez joined the ranks of immortality by pitching a no-hitter on 9/6/2006 against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. I had the opportunity to meet Sanchez shortly after the end of the 2006 season and got him to sign a rare season ticket to his rookie no-hitter. These Sanchez rookie game used cleats and glove are a neat compliment to one of my current favorite pitchers on my hometown Detroit Tigers. :) |
Wow Scott! Great group of Sanchez items.
|
great that you can read his name, class act by a current player

1947 Jackie Robinson press photo

Seems like it has been a long time since I have been able to post something on here and the last time the autograph guys were brutal on a honus wagner signature. Anyway had a pleasant surprise thumbing through a scrapbook I bought from ebay. Two 1947 AP wire photos of the world series. Love the shout with Jackie Robinson celebrating.

Scott those are awesome! Way cool! :) |
Sanchez was great when he was on the Marlins in terms of fan interaction. He signed for anyone and everyone and was very friendly towards fans at spring training. Good guy in my book.

Recently Bob Freedman reached out to me regarding my possible interest in an original pre-MLB debut photo of Roberto Clemente. I thanked him and explained that I was terribly interested. However such an image was currently out of my financial reach. Without prompting or request Bob made my ownership of this photo financially feasible. I have to believe that it is one of the earliest images of Roberto in his Pirate uniform. Thanks to Bob's generosity this 1955 Type I photo of 20 year-old Roberto Clemente at his first Pirate Spring Training arrived today. I am thrilled to add it to my collection. He also included a free Burke image of Cobb. Thanks Bob I am more grateful than I could possibly express with my limited vocabulary:o

Beautiful image Mike ...and Beautiful generosity Bob!
|
Wow, Mike! What a terrific Clemente photo for your Pirates collection.
Well done! |
Jack, Jim, Gary & Packs,
Thanks for your comments about Anibal Sanchez. It's nice to hear others regard him as a good guy in the hobby. I love watching him pitch! It's like watching a surgeon operate. If only the Tigers can give him some run support... It seems that they always saved that for Max Scherzer games. :( Maybe Anibal will get those runs in 2015? |
Boundless.........

The vast collection of no-hit memorabilia you've amassed is just amazing. Honestly, I don't know how you are able to contain your excitement enough to sleep at nights. I look forward to reading and seeing your future posts....keep 'em coming! Bob |
...modern stuff :)
Prior to attending last year's NFC Championship Game, the hugest sporting event I attended was the 2004 NLCS game where Houston beat Atlanta to win their first playoff series ever. I sat right behind the Astros dugout, so got to really revel in the celebration. Us Astros fans have not had much of that over the years. Yesterday I won this 2004 Astros Phil Garner road jersey. Garner was one of my favorite Astros back in the early '80s and hit about half his home runs when I attended, which was kind of weird. Other than Carlos Beltran, he's the guy whose jersey I would want from that season. Not sure when it was worn, and I guess it's possible it's not really a gamer, but for now I'm elated to finally pick something up related to that season: |

Wow, great items guys, lets keep them coming.
I found this Reach Mickey Cochrane signature model yesterday, and despite it's condition, I couldn't say no, especially considering the price. I can't see too many of these being out there, but I'm no glove expert. I did find a 1928 ad online for his signature model selling then for 15.00. The stamping were different from mine, but mine was made in Canada and the stamps and cloth patches usually differ from American made models in my experience. Or maybe mine was made later? Anyway, sorry to ramble on. |

Ewell Blackwell nearly duplicates Vander Meer's record back-to-back no-hitter feat
4 Attachment(s)
Quick trivia question:
Who came the closest to duplicating Johnny Vander Meer's record feat of throwing two back-to-back no-hitters? My post title gives it away, but it was Johnny's Reds teammate Ewell "The Whip" Blackwell in 1947. But, the coincidental circumstances surrounding it were absolutely bizarre: On June 17th, 1947 Blackwell no-hit the Boston Braves 6-0. Johnny Vander Meer also no-hit the Boston Braves for his 1st no-hitter on June 11th, 1938. Vander Meer witnessed Blackwell's no-hitter from the bench that night. On June 22nd, 1947 Blackwell took the mound in game 1 of a double header against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Vander Meer also no-hit the Brooklyn Dodgers to complete his record setting double no-hitter in 1938. Blackwell took his 2nd consecutive no-hitter into the 9th inning. Vandy was actually perched on the top step of the Reds dugout ready to congratulate his friend and teammate for duplicating his record. Blackwell retired the first batter he faced before excruciatingly surrendering a hit (a single) to Eddie Stanky in the 9th inning. The parallels are interesting and eerie. So close! After more than 76 years, no one has even duplicated the feat. For a number of years I have owned a ticket to Blackwell's near brush with history. I was able to finally find the ultimate companion piece, a scored program to Blackwell's game on 6/22/47. It's really in great shape (NMT). Check it out... |

I don't know where you find this stuff, but it is amazing. Congrats on another great companion piece. You know since Jimmy(kingofclout) stopped doing baseball, I think the crown of King of Companion Pieces has been passed to you. Best, Mark |

Great pick-ups this month. Here's one I was happy to get recently. It's from California, Stanislaus county, from what I have researched. I think it's a 1890s photo, but would love to hear more info if anyone has any. Jeremy

Well Mark...
Thanks! :)
I've got to share this with you: I may be the ONLY person that still subscribes to the SCD (Sports Collectors Digest). I actually have been a subscriber for a million years. It's certainly not the publication that it once was, but as I tell many of my friends, every once in a while I still find a diamond in the rough. This was a perfect example of why I still subscribe. I would have missed this scorebook otherwise, because the seller Pat Nuttycombe does not sell on eBay. I managed to score something that had been on my want list for years. |
Great pickup Scott
Love finding out something about the history of the game I didn't know......very nice addition too!!!!
