Leon
I'm in. I trust your judgement. This should be fun Bob |
Diamond Stars would be a great one or even 1934 Goudey. Alot of HOFers.
|
Keep the post coming. Thank you to all for the input.
-Nick |
Did this idea die? Did I miss it? Did a set get decided?
|
I suggested to Leon when I saw an auction currently running about several post-war sets which would were available reaonably and he indicated to me that he would much rather run pre-war (which makes sense)
However, I think some of the sets I mentined, would be great for this and I hope he reconsiders :D Rich |
To make it a pre-war set and yet one where the value is spread out nicely can be tough... but I would suggest one of the Games. 1936 S&S, 1913 Tom Barker, 1913 National Game, 1914 Polo Grounds - they are completely loaded with Hall of Famers so instead of 1-2 people getting one big card, many people would get a nice HOF card. Would also keep the cost per person down. You'd still have a few higher end hits like a National Game Joe Jackson.

Just catching up on this...i love the idea of a 'mixed bag'. Like one guy said, it gets ALL of us interested in this. Not knowing what you can get will be interesting indeed. I am more post-war, but i wouldnt mind getting a piece of pre-war.

I'm new to this forum but I'd be in for the break. 41 play ball and 51 bowman both sound good.

I think Play Ball would be the best value but would be happy with anything you choose.
|
Yeah, hopefully it's not too late for input. If it is, I'm simply in for the idea. If it's not, I'd suggest 47-66 exhibits, bowman 49-51, or t206
|
I appreciate everyone's input on this topic. I am actively looking for the right set. If it is not Pre-War it will be a set with a lot of good HOF'er cards. It will definitely be vintage. Hopefully I will have another update soon.
|
'54 Topps
Thanks to Sterling Sports Auctions for auctioning the set we will be breaking. While it's not pre-war, it's close. More details soon......

Great deal Leon! I can't wait to participate... so many options for a winner, great rookies
|
All in
Even though I do not collect post-war I'm still in...plenty of nice opportunities for us, and not a bad looking set of cards. Thanks Leon, and let's make this fun

Nice
Tough to complain about any of the great 1950s sets getting the nod here! Thanks Leon, I am looking forward to participating.
|
Even though it is not pre-war as most hoped it is still an amazing set with great value. Leon definitely picked a great set! I'm glad to see the tremendous support on the site. I'd also like to thank Leon for making this happen!
Im really excited and hope everyone else on the forum is! -Nick |
Great choice Leon!!
However we go about letting people sign up, I'm in and I'll take as many as 10 slots if they are available after everyone has a chance to get involved. :D |

Thanks, -Nick |
cool opportunity! thanks for setting this up!

Thanks Leon and Nick. This should be fun.
|
Great choice, Leon. My favorite post war set, and one that I have contemplated putting together for years. Thanks!
|
I am interested. Let me know.

$12 per slot plus shipping allows for a decent profit and an affordable entry fee
|
Quote:
We don't have a final cost per slot yet. It will be a 10% markup to the final price (hammer + BP). Then on each order there will be shipping and any other small, hard fees that are accumulated. My half of the 10% will be donated to a local animal charity of my choice.....Nick will get the other so he can officially be doing it for the love of doing it and about 2 bucks an hour....The goal was to get each random drawing to cover the cost and a buck or two after that for Nick's time and charity. We'll continue to give the exact numbers as we go.....but so far the final hammer and BP was $1955. Add 10% to that and you get $2150.05 or ($2150). Add a very small amount for actual supplies and paypal or whatever, plus shipping...and anyone can figure out the costs per however we do it :). |
I would strongly like to reiterate the request to allow only one slot per person for the first couple of days (or whatever time frame works best), thus allowing 'everyone' to get a chance to join. After this fair warning time expires, then people would be able to hop in and buy as many slots as they wish.
Again, if the money is done via paypal f/f, then making multiple payments over time won't add additional fees to the mix. |

Let's assume $10 per slot for the initial round (for argument's sake). 1 per customer for x number of days. After x number of days, leave it wide open as maybe a reverse auction (starting at $15/slot?), dropping each day until all gone (but never less than the $10/slot). The original $10/slot total (cost, overhead, charity) would still be in place with the additional going to charity. Yeah, I know. Maybe a logistics nightmare but might generate quicker action and more for charity. Something to consider. |
I'm in, looking forward to this!!

Thanks, Nick |
I was trying to ensure you all a profit; based on the posts just say $10 each with a max of 3 at this point.
|
I would love to get on this
Thanks |
I think three would be great - but I want to make sure that I get Aaron, Banks and Kaline!
|
Nick and I will discuss how to do the drawing of the lots. Absolutely everyone should get a chance at the first round of available slots, whatever that might be. My gut also tells me that 3 would be a good max number to start with, then go from there.....Most of this is going to be up to Nick....but he and I will discuss. Thanks to all who have expressed an interest.
|
Nice set. Excited to participate. Thanks Leon and Nick for your time and trouble to give us this opportunity.

I am absolutely in.
Leon, will you be able to shoot an email to everybody when it's time to sign up? I don't want to oversleep and miss anything, but if I know when to be here and sign up an official something or other, and send in my money, I will set multiple alarms to rouse my body from its supine position. :D I would also like to know if we can buy lots for other people, too. Oh, and of course, a big thank you to Leon, Nick, for setting this really fun idea up. Thanks also to Sterling for handling the auction. I am very much looking forward to this! |
In for Prewar
|
Sounds like a lot of people are interested and going to have fun with this. I want to Thank Leon for picking the set from Sterling, the consignor is a great guy and would also like to say Thanks.
Thanks to everyone for there participation in Sterling and Good Luck to all, I probably will get a spot myself, who wouldn't want to own a Aaron, Banks or Kaline Rookie? Lee Behrens |
In for 1954 Topps.
|
I'm in as well when the buying thread starts.
Just a comment though, in looking through this thread, it seems there may already be as many as 70 buyers (although some may drop out with the post-war set). You may want to consider only 2 buying slots to start as that would push the potential buyer number to 125 total. Like me, I assume there are a number of people who have just been following the thread, waiting for the "buy" thread. Dave |

To answer a couple of Bill's (hi Bill) questions, there will be a thread which Nick will start and anyone who checks the board at least every several days will see it. It will be almost impossible not to see. :) And I see no reason why a member can't buy a slot for anyone they want to, preferably after our members get all they want to. And actually it would be appreciated if there are some leftover. I am having Sterling Sports Auctions (hi Lee) ship the set straight to Nick, in order to expedite matters a little bit. I will try harder to have a pre-war group or set next time but I really wanted to get something going already and this looked like a nice set. Like Lee said, who wouldn't want that Aaron rookie (or the others mentioned)?
|
I was not real excited about this till it was announced that it would be a 54 Topps set. Amazing choice with the 3 nice rookies, 2 Ted Williams cards and a Willie Mays. I am in for 2 or 3 slots or what ever the limit is on the first buy in.
|
Definitely excited for this!

1954 Topps SGC Yankees

....the '54's look good in the SGC holders and it's full of New York Yankees and Bob L. should have a Mantle ready by the end of the shenanigans . |
Nice Choice for set
Wow, this sounds like a lot of fun... Count me in for a spot or two.
|
Awesome! Great looking cards, excited to see the official starting post.

Just a couple of updates!
-I will post the official thread most likely on Tuesday when I receive the set. -Leon will also be sending an email blast once the official thread is posted -There will be a limit of two spots per member for the first three days of the thread being active, so everyone has the opportunity to join. After that time frame members can claim as many spots as they would like -If anyone has any more questions. Feel free to post on this thread or private message me. Thanks, Nick |
Set is arriving earlier than expected. I should have it in hand this afternoon.
I will post the thread tomorrow morning. Thanks, -Nick |
Cool. Already have a Aaron, but a chance to get some other RC is nice too.
Just a suggestion, as for the drawing...how the list is made. How about the buyer decides what # he is on the list. Especially when it comes to buying multiples slots, do people wanna have their choices confined to only those or wanna spread them out. Like if i bought 3 slots...In the previous one we did, you would get like #'s 145,146,147. How about if i could choose slots like 54,88,120 instead. Just a suggestion, it could be more of a headache, but not really. |
I'll be in for a slot or two. Great looking set!
|
In for 2...not a card collector but this seems way cool. Thanks Leon and Nick.
Jeff |
Sounds fun, I'm going to try to get in !
