I've been eyeing this '37 Wheaties "card" of Joltin' Joe for some time. I finally pulled the trigger ...

deadballfreaK 08-10-2014 11:08 PM

Well, this qualifies as an August "Pickup" because I literally just picked up some cards off the floor that I didn't even know I had. Scratching around in a spare room we have which is pretty much a junk room, I found six graded cards which had fallen behind a desk and were completely forgotten about. 4 of them were not exciting. 1967 Topps football cards PSA 7 and 8 of Miller Farr, Frank Jackson, Art Powell, and Larry Elkins. I actually remember winning these cards off ebay for 99 cents each. Not sure why I wanted them, but a good price. The other two much better and have me mystified. 1913 Tom Barker game cards of Christy Mathewson and Ed Walsh. Both SGC 70/5.5. I don't remember these cards for the life of me. I assume they came from a time when I was drinking heavily. Not like yesterday, I mean REALLY heavily. Still a nice "Pickup"!

Okay, here we go again with this Monster thing. I'm going to approach this a little differently this time. Sure I will. The Monster will never see me coming. I'm going to sneak up on him all silent like. At least I can honestly say that this is the best condition Ty Cobb card I've ever owned... hands down.

<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-8XVAj9gJP9iym1tuBEwgEbbPrYp6YHrRqcN_cfzkkQ?feat=em bedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FBbI_Xc6hOg/U-lk8dY_OiI/AAAAAAAAhHA/AMLjQFt7Sto/s800/Cobb_Red_SGC_60.jpg" height="800" width="486" /></a>

Also picked up the cleanest Chase-Trophy I've ever owned. Quite happy with this pair. And now my unsigned T206 collection now stands at 20 examples. Once I had 521...

Awesome Cobb and Chase. Very difficult to find a red Cobby with great color, registration and centering all in one card. Well done!

AMBST95 08-12-2014 03:23 PM

That's a beautiful Cobb! I've picked up a few more, so I thought I'd share.

Beautiful card Ben.

BTW, what is a "F Scott Fitzgerald" in card lingo? I know he is the famous author, but I am confused about the card being called that.

Thanks to everyone. Here is a link to a thread I started when I found this card on EBay. There are some very good explanations by some great people on this forum about the "F" stamp and the supposed relation to F Scott Fitzgerald. The debate is still out there, but I chose to be a believer! :)
Worst case scenario, I have a T206 Hall of Famer!

There's another one of these "F" marked cards on ebay right now, I just don't remember which card it is! I didn't know what the stamp meant at the time until I read this thread and was convinced you bought the card I had seen since I saw it the same day you purchased yours, but it's definitely a different card. Let the hunt begin!!!

Yes, but let's reopen the debate. Does the F stand for F. or for Fitzgerald?

Both very nice Leon, the one on the right being a better match in design to the GQ packs. What are your impressions of the differences between the two (date, original contents, etc.)?

The other day, I was writing a little Pirates history article and realized that I didn't have any Woody Jensen cards. It was his birthday, so I said what better day to pick one up. Looking at my three choices on ebay, I couldn't decide, so I bought all three. Same seller, free shipping, total cost: $18.50! Can't beat that. Love the prices on these 1936 Goudey/Fine Pen cards

I finally have a new computer up and running after being with out a desktop for over 6 months after the last one crashed. I was able to lurk on the board for that time, but posting anything from my phone was sort of a pain and I certainly didn't know how to show anything from my phone. But anyway, I picked the following four cards up from The National and I just wanted to shout out a hello and thanks to all those I saw and talked to at the National. Everyone from the board is always so polite and friendly and great to talk to. I want to especially thank those board members from which I bought cards from and from those board members that I was considering buying from, but ran out of money...sorry!:( These four cards, an E98 Tenney which I just had to have another, and the 3 Turkey Reds...my new set that I'm pursuing, came from board members Michael Peich, Ed Hans, Tim Newcomb, and Gary Nuchereno.
Thanks Guys! Enjoy! I love all the great cards from this month!

Some gorgeous cards coming in this month, guys.

Pete, I'm a sucker for a Ruth or Gehrig Goudey. To get one from each at the same time, wow. Very nice!

T206collector, that's a really nice Cobb. Nice clean lines on the edges.

Daryl, I really need to sit down and learn about the Mello Mint cards. I know enough to appreciate that they are to get. And I love that you got one of Hughie Jennings. Every time I see him on a card, especially with his famous "Eeyah" pose, I can't help but smile.

numbers 32 and 33 toward the Nadja set. Really must thank the board member sold these to me. Not only did he give me a fair price, but he also held them aside for me for a few months while I gathered up the money to pay for them...Thanks Jerry
