I would agree that pose 3 (Stooping to field grounder) is his toughest as it was only issued in 1888. All his other poses were either issued in both 1888 and 1889 or just 1889 with the 1889 cards being more common than the 1888 examples. Nice card.

Thanks Joe....I had noticed over the years that I have only seen maybe 1 or 2 of this pose (from 1888) offered for sale or at auction.....

Thanks, Joe! I'm pretty happy with all the tough ones I have acquired over the years. Most of them are in pretty decent shape picture-wise. I might post a few more later and one is a tad ugly! :D

Jay:

Did John Dreker put you up to asking that question? He'll never let me live that down. I saw a Taylor Shafer once at a Fort Washington show, but by the time I got back to the seller who had it you had already bought it! :( So, if you ever want to sell it...

John:

That particular Visner has one of the best pictures I have ever seen on an Old Judge card. The scan doesn't do it justice. Brooklyn had those god-awful uniforms that looked like graph paper and you can see the lines in his shirt and pants. I had zero interest in him as a player, but when I saw the image I just had to have it. It also helped that it looks like someone just stole his beer money! :D

oldjudge 06-28-2014 02:32 PM

:-)

ValKehl 06-28-2014 02:43 PM

I agree that the Visner card has an incredible image. Visner looks to be a mean sucker - I wouldn't want to incur his wrath!

You've been holding out on me, brother! You have an unidentified Hafner, too! Nicely done!

Kevin

oldjudge 06-28-2014 04:38 PM

Fred--how did you get a Corcoran away from John?

Fred 06-28-2014 04:42 PM

Jay,

I did it the only way possible... I BEGGED..... I mean really BEGGED... I threw my dignity out the window and BEGGED.... I almost had to fly to the east coast and carry a cardboard sign that said "will BEG for a Larry card..."....

Fred 06-28-2014 04:45 PM

Kevin,

That Hafner came from the Oregon Find. You can barely read the name Hafner at the bottom, it is very faint. After Dave sold it to me he kind of let me know that he let it go too cheap... :D Well, I didn't think it was that cheap...

oldjudge 06-28-2014 04:55 PM

That must have been the only card from that find that got sold too cheap.

Printer's scrap is unheard of in the Old Judge set. This is the only such piece I have ever seen. Please note that the Gleason Browns Champ shares the card with a bit of low number series card 5, which is the King Kelly catch, hands chest high pose.

wonkaticket 07-03-2014 11:07 PM

Jay, that has to be one of the coolest cards I've seen. Wow!

barrysloate 07-04-2014 04:37 AM

What's great about that card is that although only a tiny remnant of the second card is visible, it's the number #5, positively identifying it. Very impressive.

shernan30 07-04-2014 04:55 AM

Really neat card Jay.

This is one of the most interesting Old Judges I have ever found. As most/some of you know, sheets of Old Judges were made by rephotographing cabinet size photographs produced from glass plate negatives. If you look closely at the bottom of this card you will see the words "OLD JUDGE CIGARETTES". Those words, in that format, are not found on any N172. The only place to find that line is on the mount of an Old Judge cabinet. Thus, when making this card (and possibly the sheet it came from, Old Judge cabinets were used to provide cabinet sized images, instead of just albumen photograph prints.

wonkaticket 07-11-2014 02:02 PM

Extremely cool card Jay, thanks for sharing. Have you ever seen another one, same pose or otherwise? When the card maker compiled a matrix of 24 cabinet sized images I suspect the photos were rarely mounted on full size cabinet mount as they needed to be trimmed down so as to not affect the neighboring cards. But to see your Weber with the OLD JUDGE mount at least partially present, what a treat.

oldjudge 07-12-2014 10:57 AM

Fred 07-13-2014 04:59 PM

Jay,

If you're still following this thread I had a quick question -

Where in the "OJ spectrum" of "hard to get" would you rate the Phenomenal Smith portrait card? How does this card rate in the order of "rarity" when compared to the spotted ties?

Thanks!

oldjudge 07-13-2014 05:21 PM

Hi Fred! The Phenominal Smith portrait is a very scarce card, as scarce or scarcer than most of the spotted ties, possibly with the exceptions of Behel and Brady. It is scarcer than all of the Connor, Gerhardt, Kelly, Welch, Esterbrook, Orr, and Lynch script cards (one Lynch script pose may be as scarce). Unfortunately, it also tends to come with a light photo.

Pinkish cards can have sharp images. Unfortunately, in most instances they do not. Scarcer than the pink tints are the purple tints. Unlike the pink tints, they usually have nice photos, sometimes very nice ones.
