T205 Cobb

Yeah the back has some paper missing but I can live with it!!

Matt

MattyC 02-05-2014 01:53 PM

That T205 Cobb has a clean white baseball and no red on the basepaths as well. So many have that red ink shifted over. Great call picking that up.

A little OT. I bought this because of the picture and I because this gentleman-and he was a gentleman-was the only pre-WWII ballplayer I ever met.

Two pickups with the last of my ebay bucks...R303-b Simmons and a duplicate W554 McWeeny I picked up thinking I still needed one (oops)

Black Swamp Find Mack Miscut

This finally arrived today. To me this card is Gem Mint, I am just glad that SGC gave it a technical grade of "Good" so that I could afford it. Factory errors, to me, shouldn't be counted against the grade of a card (especially to the extent it was with this card).

I don't have time to scan, and HA has great scans already so I will just use theirs:

From the Lawson's Game--the very first baseball card game, so it's said. This is one of the rarest cards in the set. 1884. I guess this makes this my oldest card.

Great looking card.
For the record I have owned several sets and all of the cards are exactly equal in rarity, in my experiences.

We might even have a nice raw set in our upcoming auction, as we have before.

Jay Wolt 02-07-2014 11:53 AM

Leon in the set there are multiple cards of some, like the Striker and some cards are solo like the Umpire.

GregMitch34 02-07-2014 11:54 AM

Leon, according to Pop reports (which I know don't represent all cards) the "Striker" card (which I also have) and one other appear in dozens of copies, all of the others only a handful at PSA and another handful at SGC... so from that, yes, there are two "commons" and the rest about equally scarce..

Woops forgot. There are in fact different numbers of different players. I was thinking that all of the decks of cards I had seen were the same..Time to go back to sleep.

and I should add, yes Greg, you were correct on this. :)

I am curious to see if more miscuts come up in the BSF cards to know if the rest of the sheet was distributed to the same place. If they do show up in the BSF collection we may be able to figure out an entire sheet layout.

As many of you are aware, two of my major collecting focuses are WaJo cards and Sam Rice Cards. And, you may have seen my recent, ecstatic post in the LOTG Auction pick-up thread where I showed the 1921 Herpolsheimer's WaJo 1-of-1 card that I won in the LOTG Auction that ended a week ago.

Well, guess what - a couple of days after my WaJo post, I received an email from a Net 54 Board member (whom I didn't know, but whom happens to live roughly 25 miles from me) asking if I would be interested in purchasing his 1921 Herpolsheimer's 1-of-1 card of Sam Rice (and, at a reasonable price!). I could hardly believe my eyes as I read this email. Would I be interested - heck, I'd kill for this card, so to speak! I put my check into the mail on Thursday, and the Herps-Rice arrived in today's mail. Are Board members great, or what?!! Bruce, again, MANY THANKS!

I keep pinching myself to make sure that I am not merely dreaming that within a week's time, I have picked up two cards that I never, ever expected that I would be able to obtain. 2014 is already a great year, irregardless (sorry, but I've long used this "incorrect" word) of whether or not I add anything else to my collections for the remainder of this year!

Hey John, what you deem to be my "showing off" is merely my feeble attempt to "keep up with the Joneses Wonkatickets," which I now realize is even more futile than ever, especially since you've been "showing off" your incredible N172s, each of which is better looking than all of my 70+ N172 Washington-player cards!!! :D

Seriously, Pete, John, Leon, Jason and Frank, many thanks for the kind comments. You guys and many other Board members have brought me so much pleasure and made this hobby so much more fun for me ever since I found Net 54, which was around the time I retired in 2007 and began having more time to enjoy my hobby.
BEST to ALL,
Val

Phil, I guess I'd say I collect rookie HOFers but I'm not really going after all of them. The Baltimore Ruth and the Just So Young are a bit beyond my expectations.

My T206 Gibson back run was completed for all of two hours thanks to that card.
The day I got what I thought was the last card I needed was the day REA made the announcement about that card in an upcoming auction.
