Judging by the skin on that infield I'm shocked any of the infielders had teeth:eek: |
I thought I played on some terrible infields but that has got to be the worst. I have even more respect for these players from days gone by who had a high fielding percentage.

Thanks Gary,
Picked them up this past weekend. If it's any consolation, my checkbook hates me too right now. But didn't know when I would see a vintage Wagner snapshot again. I missed out on another one a few years back and have had a bit of regret ever since. Mike |
I know it doesn't hold a candle to the snapshots we've been seeing here, but I like it. Circa 1974, based on Mickey's sideburns :)

My newest HOF snapshot. Henry Aaron! I probably overpaid on this one, but I love the fact that this was a sweet Aaron photo,it was against my favorite team(Cubs), and Hammer' Hank hit a HR that game! http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...ps440afe47.jpg http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...psca4d1440.jpg |

I got these snapshots from my first scrapbook haul! The photos were taken in 1941 from a family from MA. Super thrilled to add these.

Many thanks to (YankeeFan) Jack on net54!
I'm happy to add this 1928 snapshot of WaJo, at the beginning of his stint as manager of the Newark Bears, to my Walter Johnson collection. The photo appears to be taken in Feb. of 1928, FWIW. |

Thanks for the compliment Craig.
I have been trying to thin out the collection a bit and really haven't added much to the collection in the last year and a half, but every now and then I see an item that I gotta have. The Wagner photo is one of those items. As much as I was drawn to the image of Wagner, something about the field and the background with the trees & houses just jumped out at me. BTW, you're right, wouldn't want to play "Mercy" with ole Hans. Mike |
WILLLSOOOOONNNN! Okay, this.."Hack" guy is not as cool as Wilson from, "Cast Away" but still very excited to add this piece to my collection!

As a funny, insightful aside that came to mind while enjoying the heck out of this thread…
Q: How can you tell Sandy Koufax is Jewish? A: Because he's signing autographs with his left hand. When you look at the tremendous lefties from the old days, like Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Whitey Ford and others, they were (literally) forced to use their right hands when writing. Catholic schools in the eastern United States were especially notorious for this practice as the left hand was considered sinister (in Latin, 'sinister' is defined as "on the left-hand side"). So when you see photographs of these players giving their autographs to fans, it's amazing seeing them using their right hands. I was especially taken by the photo of Whitey Ford. He, like me, is from Astoria, Queens. My southpaw sister was also forced to use her right hand by the nuns there. Chilling. I'm sure this fact isn't news to most people around these parts, but it's worth mentioning. |
Chief Bender mows 'em down
1 Attachment(s)
This is my favorite, which I recently added to my collection. Chief Bender in March 1916 (backstamped date) in spring training with the Phillies, the only year he appeared with them. It so beautifully captures the era and the character of the man. Notice the field hand appears to be holding Bender's glove. In poor condition, but priceless to me.

Joe Torre as a minor leaguer
1 Attachment(s)
I like shots of guys in uniforms other than how we normally picture them - usually either early in their career or later in their career, when they've moved on to another team. I picked up a great group of photos this week and it included a Joe Torre snap shot from his brief stint in Louisville in 1961.

Great shot Brad!

Here are a few more of Eddie that I found in my stash: --A cool shot taken by a fan sititing in RF at the 1957 World Series, as Mathews hits a game-winnning homer in his direction; --With Charlie Grimm (L) and Joe Adcock (R) joking around; --Doing an interview in spring training circa 1958-59; --Arriving in Hawaii |

Here are two Ruth ones I just acquired at the White Plains show. I really like the one where he is holding the bat. The other one is really small, but the price was right. I am really enjoying seeing everyone's photos.

Here's a few early Rose photos. I like how they show his number progression from 11 to 14...
|
Chris, great Rose photos! I'm curious where they originated from. There's a seller on eBay with a couple thousand of spring training snapshots that seem to span the early 60's through the mid 70's. Stylistically your Rose photos are very similar. I wonder if they come from the same collection? I purchased many of the 71 Pirates from the seller but alas no Clemente, Stargell, or Ellis were to be had. I'm curious as to the story behind them and the identity of the photographer who took them. Nonetheless, those Rose photos are beautiful.
|
Thanks, Mike. I believe they originated from the same source / photographer but I acquired them through another individual...
|
Alan- Nice pickup!!! Beauty Ruth's!
Sean - Love the Speaker and whose the player above him? I believe those Rose are from that set of snapshots that are on eBay as well nice Rose! |
Mike, I believe Al Prince is the name of the photographer you are looking for.
A couple of his photos also appear in the book Baseball Fantography, which was probably inevitable given his prolific output and that it is a book centered around baseball snapshot photos. |
Chris - awesome Rose pics - the last one has such an iconic look to it.
Sean - that Speaker is amazing! Quote:
Unfortunately for many of the teams (but fortunately for collectors of today), many of these were released years ago. More tragically, much of this kind of material was simply thrown in dumpsters when teams moved to new stadiums in the 1960s and '70s. I know a few collectors - and some very high-profile dealers - were "in the right place at at the right time" to take advantage of these situations. And I'm not talking about just the photos - player contracts, uniforms, etc were often thrown out in haste. That might be where a lot of these photos are originating from on eBay (I'm not sure of the seller you're referring to). Hope that helps. |
Thanks Brad that would explain the quality of the photos composition which often does not appear to be amateurish. I know times were different then but I cannot imagine players posing so willingly for a fan.

Al Prince, I think you are correct. The knowledge base here never ceases to amaze me! He seemed to favor the hands on hips pose. I posted a few of these awhile back but will do so again for comparison sake. The handwriting on the reverse is the same as well.

Then, continuing my search for players/coaches in uniforms that you don't normally see them in, four snap shots of Paul Waner as Milwaukee Braves hitting coach at Spring Training in 1957. |
