great pick-ups so far this month!

This is my first "legit" Ruth card, although it certainly wouldn't classify as a "rookie card" as it was issued in 1920!!

I was looking at Ruth's stats today...how in the world did he leg out 16 triples in 1921?? Was the defense that shoddy, was he that fast, or were the parks that much larger? That season he had a whopping 44 doubles, 16 triples, AND 59 home runs to go with his 177 runs and 171 RBI's! It's amazing to think that he almost scored as many runs as he knocked in over his career...was it the product of a great lineup behind him or his blazing speed?? He did steal 17 bases that season. Just sayin'.

Ruth did have good speed when he was young. He only became the big-bellied slugger that most people are familiar with late in his career. He also played home games in the Polo Grounds, which had a massive centerfield. I think that in 1921 it was over 500 feet to dead center, and due to its unique configuration it was the widest centerfield ever.
I don't have a better way of describing the Polo Grounds. You should try to find a picture of it to really understand how unusual it was.
As for your card, what is up with Ruth throwing righthanded?

dlfallen 06-06-2013 12:53 AM

Ruth's early speed:

In the fifth game of the 1921 World Series, Ruth led off the fourth inning with a bunt single. He scored on Muusel's double to left field.

Not sure how it got like that since they are usually just all blue. The red/brown goes into the shadows on the uniform too, usually it is grey, although the grey is still there too. Maybe someone was having fun at the t206 factory, who knows. I'm probably going to sell it because I don't trust the unknown, reeks of evil

Very cool card. Looks like a job for Steve.

^^^ I agree, Patrick -- very nice image on that card!

Added what is likely the best conditioned T206 to the collection, although it sits in a PSA 5 holder due to some light printing on the reverse (that's my guess, at least)...

Great looking Williamson error card! Good luck growing the Yum Yum collection.

To many others in June (joeadcock, D@ve R1cks, RCMcKenzie, Bryan, Matt Hall, Alan Elefson, and especially Paul on the Deacon White), great looking OJs! And John, what a fantastic looking Allen & Ginter poster.

oldjudge 06-08-2013 09:37 PM

Joe--the photo is Williamson, but it is a really interesting card. Poor Cap, if he doesn't pick up Dalrymple's torso in Anson in Uniform he gets Williamson's portrait in his Yum Yum.

I just picked up this W517 Hornsby with a pretty clear ghost image on the back. The ghost image was actually a surprise, I won this card on Ebay and the seller didn't have a picture of the back in the auction so I was very pleasantly surprised.

Picked this color shift up from Erick Summers on the BST. I love the fact you can see the little yellow spot further down the border. That's some detail they went through to make sure that tiny area under his left arm also got the yellow treatment

I've been enjoying an old passion of mine - '33 Goudeys. Just picked this one up on ebay. Gomez was the first pre-war card I ever owned. Bought an offgrade one for fifty cents in 1989. Sold it for $15 a few years later. Nice to have this clean example back in my collection...

New to the forum, but I wanted to post a couple of my more recent pick ups to this thread. I sure enjoy seeing all of the various acquisitions that are posted so thank you. Mine obviously aren't great yard sale finds, unique oddities, or fresh back from grading, but I wanted to share them with the board members. A good chunk of you have already seen them, and even voiced your thoughts on one of them! ;)
