I do have a real photo postcard that used a couple of the same images, it was produced by Comet Studios in Boston. |
I get the assist! Thanks, Scott!
Those Vandy's are WINNERS. :) Graig |
Scott,
Congrats on the pics. I absolutely love this pic. I think it would look incredible in Kreindlercolor. http://www.net54baseball.com/attachm...1&d=1364043835 Best, Mark |
Now for my own
Well it has been a while since I posted any pickups. I've been spending money on getting the basement finished so I would have a place to hang all this stuff. So far, my room is done so I am starting to go through some stuff to decide what to hang etc and came across some things I forgot I had.
Late 50's 60's UPI restrike pic of Joe D and Cronin. Signed by both. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...JoeDCronin.jpg Type 1 of Ford and Mantle. The back has a NY times stamp without a zip code. I know original NY times pics are rare as they haven't sold their pic archives. I have not seen any exemplars of other NYT stamps either. Any further ID help would be appreciated. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...MantleFord.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tleFordbk3.jpg 1962 Wirephoto of Koufax's no hitter against the Mets. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...oufaxnohit.jpg Original 1927 Type 1 of Lou at the playground. This goes with the one of him in the playground at bat(which I don't have...Yet!) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...playground.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...aygroundbk.jpg 1928 Type 1 of Lou in Spring Training. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...attingCage.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tingCagebk.jpg Original promo pic of Ruth, Cooper, and Mack Prior to POY filming. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...erRuthMack.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...RuthMackbk.jpg |
A couple more
So I just won on ebay this set of pics of Mel Ott.
http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=10522 http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=10521 I got them for 2 reasons. First Mel Ott was my dad's favorite player, so I always have a soft spot for him. Second is that it goes with the other pics taken prior to the 1936 WS of Lou and them together. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...composite1.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...composite2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...936WithOtt.jpg Interestingly enough, on the right edge of the top Ott pic there is a brown shadow that matches with a similar one on the left of the second pic. The reason i find it interesting is that my two Gehrig photos are taped together with a similar brown tape. I wonder if they are still connected. The seller didn't specify either way. I'll see when they get here. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...mposite1bk.jpg I also picked up a nice pic of Lou with his wife. http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=10523 |

Lance,
Thanks very much. It is an interesting thing. There is only one exemplar in the Yee-Fogel book, but it is so small, you can barely make it out. The book states that since 1941 none of the Times pics were used for syndication, so originals are very difficult to find. I didn't know this until tonight rereading that section. I've had the pic for a very long time, so I have no idea where I got it. Mark |

Thank you for the compliment. I must admit that when I spotted this photo I thought this would be perfect for Graig to paint as well. ;) :) BTW, awesome photos that you posted as well. I especially like the two of Lou Gehrig. The spring training image is a dazzler! |
Man, Lou was a monster. Look at him compared to those kids. What a great picture.
|
Yeah, I didn't realize he had such muscular arms.

Not sure what made this scorebook so tough but it had eluded me for some time. Extremely glad to finish off my 1950-1958 run of Wichita Indians/Wichita Braves scorebooks.

Dem Bums...
Many thanks to GoldenAge50s for this '56 Dodger Year Book...I think it's neat I'm only the second person to own this copy in almost 60 years...I'll take good care of it Fred...

Was lucky enough to be the high bidder on a 1923-25 Rogers Hornsby game used bat at an auction in Little Rock, AR. It has been through a lot over the years but I intend to see it gets new life.

Great pickup Clint...glad you got that run out of the way...is it just me or does that mascot on the front of the program look a little feminine?
|
I saw that auction, curious how it's related to hornsby based on just RH??

Thanks Dan. Yeah I thought the same thing. I don't know what's up with that. I guess they didn't like the design because they went back the Indian swinging the bat. |

Hornsby
Roger Hornsby did not sign a contract with Hillerich and Bradsby until I believe 1926. One of these which was a sidewritten R.H. bat recently sold in the Feb. Heritage Auction. (#80097) If I remember, I saw another one as well a very long time ago as well. Pictures also apparently exist showing Hornsby in the Cardinals dugout posing with one of these R.H. bats which shows the label turned toward the camera. Thanks.

Hornsby

The bat is 34 inches in length. The "R" starts 6.5 inches from the end of the barrel. Knob is chipped on both sides but it is a "Hornsby type" knob. Hoping to get the bat restored in the future and then will probably send to auction to help pay for my daughters college.

Sicollector, Nice pickup. you taught me something new. curious it is at 34 inches. they would Not have made an "R.H." pro stock bat, so it is either the real deal, or not, and not something in between like a pro stock. Lengths are largely not recorded for Hornsby in this era, though Hornsby is at 35 inches a year later and his other recorded player orders are at 35 inches and longer to my knowledge. That being said, the last "R.H." certed a Hornsby gamer, which was the one at Heritage, is also 34 inches, and it appears based on the auction description that John gave 34 inches a thumbs up, though I have not seen the letter.
I would be Very curious to see the photo of Hornsby holding the bat with the "R.H.", does anybody have it? that they might post, as it may be generally discerned by those who look at bats a good portion of the day, whether Hornsby appears to be holding a shorter or longer R.H. bat, 34 or 35 or 36+ inch bat. |

Thanks BJJ! I had a restored Hornsby once before that John Taube did but he would only grade it a 6 based on the lack of length information. It was a 1929/30 era bat and like you said...no records to back it up one way or the other for shorter lengths. It later was sold in a Mears auction (about 6 months ago) if you want to check it out. However, with the Heritage bat being the same length as mine and it being much earlier( I believe the center label dates it to (1923-25--correct me if I am wrong anyone)--there now seems to be a case building to support Hornsby using this length bat a few times or perhaps quite often and the lack of records just don't exist to confirm this fact.
It is in the write up of the Heritage bat that a copy of the photo would be mailed to the winner of that particular Hornsby sidewritten bat probably found by Mr. Taube during his research. Maybe someone here won that bat in February and if so--they can post the picture for people to see. I know I would love to see it. |
