Non-Baseball

Hi All,
I like the RRPC's being shown here. Especially true since I collect photographs and most of my concert photography is in black and white. I cannnot contribute any baseball pc's as I do not collect baseball. I am, however posting some RRPC's and one publicity PC from my Olympic archives. As I do not know how to put words between the images I am listing them first. Nate Cartmell - 1904 & 1908 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze athletics Charley Jewtraw - 1st ever Winter Olympics gold medal speedskating Johnny Garrels -1908 silver hurdles, bronze shotput. One of the greatest all-around athletes in University of Michigan history. Left end on the 1904 and 1905 'Point a Minute' football teams. Fullback in 1906 and scored the first TD at Ferry Field. Albert Gutterson - 1912 gold long jump. Official Olympic PC from Sweden Johnnie Hayes - 1908 gold marathon. Finished second, but awarded gold when Dorando from Italy was helped across the line by officials. Mort Kaer- 1924 Athletic pentathlon. 1st USC consensus All American in football. His 19 TD's in 1925 not broken until O.J. Simpson in 1968. NFL Franford Yellowjackts 1931. College Football Hall of Fame. Joie Ray - 1924 bronze track. Also competed in 1920, 1928. Inscribed to Rube Waddell, but not THAT Rube Waddell. Louis Scott - 1912 gold track. Signed on the back Oscar Osthoff -1904 gold and silver weightlifting. Lettered in FB, track and gymnastics at Wisconsin. State champ in diving at the age of 40. Football coach at Washington State 1910-1911. Hope you like them. |

I forgot to post these two so here they are.
1972 U.S. Olympic Wrestling team. Mailed from Munich during the games. Tallest athlete in the back row is Ken Patera. He made a name for himself in pro wrestling. Man on the left with the glasses is John Terpak. Competed in the 1936 and 1948 Olympics. He was a world champ in 1937 and 1947. 1904 Olympics - men competing in the high bar. This may be practice as the photo is dated in pencil July 26,1904 and there were no events on this day. There were gymnastics events two weeks later (Bohemian Gymnastics) and also as part of track and field at the end of August. Not all of the events in St Louis in 1904 were Olympic events. There were high school, AAU and other events which were all part of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition aka 1904 Worlds Fair. |

Fort Branch Indiana Home of Heroes
This was mailed in my hometown of Fort Branch, Indiana to another resident of Fort Branch in 1909. I don't know if it is our home team or not. The white painter's cap one guy is wearing says Evansville on it. Evansville is 20 miles away. Love the buggy in the background and the really short guy in the middle who looks like he has an attitude. Is he even 5 feet tall?

I don't collect stadium PCs per se, but I do collect some venue PCs that catch my interest. Here are a few:
http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...%20MSG%201.JPG Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of boxing, This mailing card-backed picture of the second [1890-1925] stadium of that name caught my eye because of the lower corner of the building, which plainly shows advertising for the Jim Corbett-Charlie McCoy bout on August 30, 1900. See the next image for a close-up. http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...%20MSG%202.JPG A view of the next Madison Square Garden, actually a promotional PC for the Nedick's restaurant. The picture was taken September 9, 1949; the marquee advertises the Gavilan-Castellani bout that evening. http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...dicks%20PC.jpg 1965 Dodgers PC shot at Chavez Ravine. One of the ways you can date a Dodgers stadium photo is to look at the palm trees behind the pavilion. When the stadium opened they looked like pipe cleaners, with the fronds straight up. http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...%20Dodgers.jpg This Drysdale you know was a few years after the stadium opened because the palms had developed pretty good 'beards': http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...20Drysdale.jpg 1949 postally-used Ralph Kiner: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...acino%20PC.jpg |

1910 Kansas City Red Sox with Casey Stengel
Has anyone seen this image before? |
Are the Kansas City Red Sox & Kansas City Blues the same team? Stengel played for the Blues in 1910 but only 4 games, it would be very unusual for him to appear on a team photo having played in that few games........

Here is the link to the Baseball-Reference.com website indicating that he played on the Kansas City Blues, do they have it wrong? http://www.baseball-reference.com/mi...gi?id=10c2d65b |
Quote:
There are other photos of Stengel when he played with the KC Red Sox, also with Marysville (including a baseball card), but I haven't seen this actual image before. Scouring the internet, can't find it, but I'm sure it's out there somewhere. |
What league did the Kansas City Red Sox play in?
|
Quote:
I fully understand your point, but it would be much easier to respond to if you would simply post it. |
Scott:
I did a google search first and nothing came up, hence the question The bottom line is: I don't believe that the team pictured on the postcard is the same one that Casey Stengel played for and obviously then Stengel would not be pictured there. The scenario becomes even harder to believe when you state that there are other photos picturing Casey Stengel on this Kansas City Red Sox team (which I don't think is even a professional baseball team) when he played a total of 4 games in 1910 for a Kansas City minor league team, which I believe is correctly identified as the Blues on Baseball-Reference.com. How many photo opportunities would 4 games played lend itself to? |
Phil, that wasn't so difficult, was it? :)
|
I found the previous Net 54 post about it, don't remember seeing it before. It mentions a semi-pro team which could be the one on the postcard. I don't know that much about Stengel nor his amateur career and am not going to start endless research on it so I will graciously apologize for the misunderstanding and leave it as is.
|
Quote:
Other than my own theories, I know little more than you do, but I feel that there is still research that I can do to validate those theories (or invalidate them). I have to visit northern Missouri, Iowa and Chicago, to research a baseball team I'm writing about - the Japanese Base Ball Association - so I'll just add the Kansas City Red Sox to the research list. The bigger area of doubt, unfortunately, is whether or not the postcard is real. I tend to lean toward the negative when it comes to such things, so I'm meeting with David today to go over it in detail. |
Quote:
Thanks, Phil. |
I don't blame you, Scott. If I had the chance to buy that postcard, then I would do the endless research involved, especially since it would pre-date 1910 when his T210 card was issued and which costs a fortune and I can't afford right now. This postcard would fill that spot in my collection and I would not have to spend thousands to get a 1910 Stengel card.

I don't know if it helps the cause any but here is a postcard picturing Casey Stengel in 1911 (Aurora), Casey is the guy lying on the ground above his initials. I believe this postcard originated from the Stengel estate.

Sure looks like him. Being left handed doesn't hurt the case...

So you think he played for the Red Sox team after 1910? I was thinking semi-pro would have preceeded his minor league days, that's why I went with pre-1910.
As an aside, do you have an image of the Maysville postcard? |
Just got this one, a newspaper issued PC that was mailed the day of the big fight between Jess Willard and Jack Dempsey from Toledo, OH, where the fight took place.
http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...20training.jpg |
Phil, I did some more googling and found this: KC Courier News article on Stengel
The article describes his time playing for Aurora in 1911. It also has a gallery of photos, including one of Stengel with the KC Red Sox - while he's not wearing a sweater as he is in my photo, it's clearly the same player, and he appears to even be wearing the exact same uniform in both photos. The Baseball Hall of Fame could definitely be wrong, but I like their thinking. Click on the small 'gallery' image of Stengel to the left to get a larger image and the following text below the photo: "Casey Stengel with the Kansas City Red Sox, one season before he came to Aurora. Photo courtesy~Baseball Hall of Fame" This corroborates my theory which I explained to you by email. The postcard back is a 'KRUXO' with clubs in the corners, dating it to the correct years. Also, I know I spotted a postcard of the 1910 Maysville team, but now I can't find it for anything. Here is a young Brooklyn Stengel, the KC Courier image, and my image: |

Since some non-baseball postcards have been included in this thread I'll include two here along with baseball:
1. 1915-1916 Portland Rosebuds (first U.S. team to play for Stanley Cup) 2. A fun boxing postcard. 3. A guy who loves his mom. 4. A guy named Joe. |
You've got a very good case there, Scott. I guess now the big question is whether or not the postcard is real since you doubted its authenticity earlier. I wish you were closer to me, I would be happy to take a look and give you my opinion, for what it's worth. I know you have handled lots of real photo postcards before and are probably more of an expert than I am.

I got this in the mail today. It is not even for my personal collection as he is not an American and I only collect images of American Olympians. This signature is nice for my Olympic Autograph database. Probably the only exemplar collection of just Olympians. It does not have a full postcard back, just the address lines, but is it printed on RPPC paper so I feel it fits in the category.
This is Claes Johanson (1884-1949) - He won a gold medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling (middleweight) at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and a gold medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling (light heavyweight) at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerpen. He also competed in 1924 in Paris, but did not medal at the age of 40. He has signed the back. Below his signature it reads: 'Olympiska Mastare 1920' - Olympic Champion 1920 and 'Goteborg, Sverige' - Goteborg, Sweden, the town he lived in. |
