Active week for me... I picked up the following...
1. With many thanks to Mike H (for finding it), I picked up this cool Baseball themed Humidor. I love the crossed Mushroom Bats on the Lid. 2. Cool 1931 Athletics Pinback. A bit on the plain side, but a rare (and I believe pretty desirable) pin. 3. Really excited about this piece... Athletics Straw Hat, circa 1911. The type Connie Mack would wear- super high quality, and not a "novelty" or "carnival" hat. The only other thing I've seen even close to this was a group of 3 Hat Bands in a 2004 Hunt Auction. They had the NY Giants, Red Sox, and an Athletics just like this one. No Hats were included (just the Bands) so I believe this to be super-rare.... |

BB Humidor
Mark, Very cool humidor....never seen it before....yeah I agree on the mushroom handles, very nice...now ya need that William Demuth baseball pipe...that is if you don't already have one LOL
|
Carlton, since i have the pipe, i need the humidor.
|
Maybe REA can help us fill some of these needs in May. They are due for a big event on the Memorabilia side. This early tobacco-related baseball stuff is addicting, but is really tough to find. Wish I had started collecting it earlier, as REA and Hunts both had some amazing stuff 3 -5 years ago.
|
I saw the humidor listed and kept asking myself if they were bats as advertised or made out to look like drum sticks to go with the base

Well I'm now very glad that I didn't cause it's a much better fit in your collection than mine. All best, Jimmy |
Thanks Jimmy (both for the accolades, and for not pulling the trigger on the A's Hat!!) I'm glad you ultimately refrained, and can't wait to see the next piece that you do get your hands on.
BTW... I never commented because so many others did.... but that photo of Gehrig (first one in a Yankee Uniform) is stellar! What a majestic and iconic shot.... Who would know about the heroic career ahead, and the consecutive games streak that was in store? Can't stop thinking about that image as a potential Kreindler masterpiece  Take care, Mark |

Thanks Dan and David. Yeah Wilhoit is up there but finding material of his is very difficult. Would love to get a game used bat of his. The description of the photo said Wichita but I've found other things where this exact photo was used that had him with Salt Lake.

Wheat
1 Attachment(s)
Was the underbidder on the Walter Johnson glass negative, but got this Wheat for a steal. Look at those forearms! Great items at SportsCardLink. Any suggestions as to what I should do with it? Anyone know a good photo shop in NYC where I could take this to get it developed?
|
Hey Josh,
Do you have any access to Jersey? There's a great place in Bergen County that I get my negatives scanned at. They're super cheap and the quality is always top notch. Otherwise, I can send some NYC-based suggestions your way! Graig |
I can get my hands on a car if necessary to get out to Bergen, but I'd love to get the NYC places you have in mind as well. Thanks Greg!
|
Hey Josh,
Well, if you find yourself in Bergen or Englewood for any reason, here's the place I go to: http://www.bergencountycamera.com/ I've never been to the Englewood branch, but I would imagine that they have the same services available. In the city, well, there's a plethora of places. I've used all of these three guys, though for the most part, it was years ago, as Bergen was just easier to get to for me when I was still in Rockland. In other words, they might not provide the scanning service anymore (though I don't see why they wouldn't). Here ya go: http://www.baboodigital.com/ http://www.gammaoneconversions.com/ http://www.duggal.com/ If you need anymore, just let me know. Graig |

Johnny Vander Meer 1938 Snapshot

I also placed this on the resurrected snapshot thread, but I just picked up this vintage signed 1938 snapshot of Vandy.
Any board members have any idea where the photo may have been shot? He's obviously wearing a road grey Reds jersey... Any help would be appreciated! |

I'm guessing 40s or 50s. However, if you look at the attached link, it says the Jacob Ruppert company became Jacob Ruppert Inc. in 1933. The tray just says Jacob Ruppert USA is small print. Would it have the (Inc.) if it was manufactured after 1933?

red sox pennant
1 Attachment(s)
I picked this pennant up a couple months ago. I was wondering if anyone knew when it was from and if they have ever seen it before. I am guessing it is from the '20s or '30s but I am new to the game and only have a handful of pennants to go off of
|
It's reeeeeally rare. That is a surprisingly tough late 1930s - early 40s Red Sox variation that you simply never see. I picked mine up around 1990 and just sold it last year. I did so reluctantly, because within that 20 year span, I NEVER saw another (and I search these things almost every week).
Congrats on a very nice pickup! |
Just wanted to add that if you un-knot the tassels, the white felt binding strip might lay down better (and possibly span from top to bottom). The outer plastic sleeve should then provide adequate pressure against it, to keep pressed flat.
If this doesn't bother you, nevermind  |
Thanks for the tip on tassels,
Any idea how much it is actually worth roughly? I realize it is probably hard to put a value on it if there aren't may around. I don't really plan on selling it but I wouldn't mind knowing what kind of a deal I got |
Quote:
So even with the extreme rarity, it's probably only worth $135 - $165. If you could fix the white strip to lay flat, it could possibly exceed $200 on a very good day. All it would take is for 2 Red Sox Fans to see it and want it (most Red Sox collectors wouldn't have this one). But it's worth closer to $150 in its current state. Hope this helps, Mark |

Been a tough month...got caught looking at a Pete Rose 4000th hit ticket, Swung and missed big time at a Al Kaline 3000th hit ticket, but got a base hit on a Roy Hamey signed check. Roy was the GM for the 61 Yankees.

Bob Gibson no-hitter and Len Barker Perfect Game tickets
2 Attachment(s)
Two very nice last minute pickups in January:
A pair of ticket stubs to the HOF great Bob Gibson's no-hitter in 1971 and a vintage signed stub to Len Barker's perfect game in 1981. :D I'm surprised that with all the incredible tools that Bob Gibson brought to the game, that he only managed to throw one no-hitter. It really demonstrates how much luck actually factors into throwing one. |

http://shop.ebay.com/sportsbronzes/m..._sop=15&_rdc=1 FYI, , I am currently auctioning the 1953 Helms Olympic bread loaf and the 1960 Canada Dry Olympic water, and a 1985 Larry Holmes vs. Michael Spinks boxing pillow on eBay, link above. [QUOTE=CarltonHendricks;864184]http://sportsantiques.com/fantazdispenser.htm Mike, I'm not a pin guy but that's a cool pin...I did a story on a Fan Taz syrup dispenser, see link above. At the end of the story is a Fan Taz sign, which has been on eBay a long time. In other news...here's some Jan P/U's....went to the Glendale Show and the Long Beach flea over the weekend...didn't find much....At Glendale got a dummy advertising loaf of Helms bread, stating Helms supplied bread to the Olympics....after leaving regretted getting it since it's one of those fragile pieces I hate...then the next day at the Long Beach flea I found a bottle of Canada Dry water, again advertising it as supplyed to the Olympics...then found a killer horserace plaque marked 1966....also got a cool little c1930's polo trophy on eBay 7 1/2" wide..given to a U.S. Ambasador <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=BreadWater.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/BreadWater.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> |
