The money that hunters spend gives ranchers an economic incentive to perserve and protect their land from real estate developers, and the animals harvested keep the deer population in balance with the native vegetation so it is not wiped out. Yes, I choose to get my meat this way rather than support a corporate meat farm that is run like a death camp and produces tons of environmental waste.

Anthony, those are some AWESOME cards !!!

About showing off your killer instinct...

"Its in velvet but taken with a rifle on a Utah CWMU. Graded 182 B&C for those that like to score 'em. That G2 looks tall because it is... 21 inches..."

First of all, I hate deer as much as the next guy. They eat all my plants and are a nuisance with the ticks and the running in front of the cars, etc.

Also, I love to eat meat... lots of it.

But you gotta exercise a little discretion before you show off your hunting photos on a baseball card board. Tons of people find that kind of stuff really offensive. And as much as I hate deer and love meat, even I found that photo more sad than anything else.

Isn't there a dead animal board you can post that on?

Same here. I don't have anything against what you are doing and how you get your food, but I'd rather not see it in any form on this board.

jb217676 09-10-2010 12:47 PM

"Bambi"no....

What does the dead deer have to do with baseball? Did you chase and kill it with a bat? Was it beaned in the head with a 100 MPH fastball? This is the wrong place for a pic. like that.

M's_Fan 09-10-2010 12:57 PM

Well, I guess I misjudged the situation. I feel like I've come to know some of the folks on this forum, and I thought there might be some other hunters out there that might appreciate a quick off-topic post, along the lines of the many other off-topic posts and threads out there. I guess not.

HRBAKER 09-10-2010 01:01 PM

M's fan, for the record I was not offended but it was a "whoa" in the middle of the Pick-Ups thread. Nice bag btw.
BTW for those who have been around for awhile we have had numerous posts with folks displaying their haul from various fishing trips.
But then again fish aren't furry with big brown eyes.

Orions father 09-10-2010 01:03 PM

Let him be. Albeit, it was OT but so is alot of the other comments on here. I dont think he meant to offend anyone, just was proud of his recent pickup. Most everyone would be offended if they saw the meat they eat everyday in such a "raw" form, doesn't mean its not OK. Although I dont hunt or own a gun, I respect his right to and am happy for him. Most of you may disageree with me (thats OK, that is what makes this country great), saying it doesn't belong here just because it not baseball is wrong. I have seen shared pix of our families, other hobbies (motorcycles, coins) and even a few illegal substances on this board.

I agree with virtually everything you said here. OT stuff is usually fine. And I certainly don't want to see the state of the cow that produced my afternoon lunch in a photo on this board. I also respect his right to hunt and own a gun, particularly in the overpopulated deer context. Heck, I will even go so far as to say, "Thank you," for killing that deer in that context. The effort is genuinely appreciated.

Having said that, it is a photo that will make more than a fair share of people sad, uncomfortable, angry, disgusted, etc. And I would prefer not to see any more dead animals here. For whatever reason, fish don't pull at my gag reflex. But the warm-blooded animals do.

Now, let's get back to hunting deer and showing baseball cards!

Orions father 09-10-2010 01:30 PM

If people were offended than that is on them, in my humble opinion, I'm sure that was not his intent. Its hard in this day and age not to anger someone with what you do. I'm with you T206Collector, lets get back to baseball, thats why we all come here.

I pulled the deer pic down from my photobucket account so it doesn't show up on this thread anymore. I enjoy hunting but I'm not the type of guy that likes to make waves. I apologize if I offended anyone, it didn't occur to me that would be the result.

Let's close this chapter and get back to talkin' about cardboard.

There is a youth soccer league in Houston called FFPS (Fun Fair Positive Soccer) where every kid gets a trophy and there are no winners or losers - no score is kept. What a great thing to teach our kids...you can work harder and be better than your competition, but everybody is rewarded the same no matter what. What's the point of even trying?

FWIW, I didn't have a problem with the picture either. As was mentioned, there have been plenty of dead fish pictures shown - just look at the "What do you do?" thread. It's a shame that people just have nothing better to do and can't mind their own business.

David,

All of those kids will probably grow up and work at the FFWP (Fun Fair Work Place) where everyone gets the same performanace review and makes the same amount of money right?

Let's close this chapter and get back to talkin' about cardboard.

I abhor hunting. I abhor animals being harmed. I'd sooner see the heads of a few Net 54 members on the wall than that poor deer you displayed here. Nevertheless, your point that you actually eat the meat and don't support a 'meat farm' makes a lot of sense. I've got more respect for someone who hunts for food than someone who abuses animals for sport and then tries to rationalize it away. But as pointed out, no one likes to see a dead Bambi on the board, even as they prepare for a steak dinner.

All this talk about steak has got me wondering: when is the Net 54 NYC Dinner group getting together again?

The presence of Frank Schulte, front row 4th from the right (between Clyde Milan (R) and Eddie Foster (L) dates David's nice rppc to 1918.

Kawika 09-11-2010 12:41 AM

Mark: You've got the eagle eye. Merito Acosta (front row, far right) was traded to the A's on May 25, 1918 so we're talking a narrow window in the Spring of '18 as to when this picture was taken. The absence of Sam Rice in the photo would be explained by the fact that he was in the army for much of the season.

I have had this one for a bit, but it doesn't look like I have ever scanned it in. I love the colors on this one!! It looks way better in hand than in the scans. Sorry for the big scan, as I don't understand the new photobucket program yet.

American Beauty 350 Framed Black Cap Matty
I also added a real sharp Collins that is going to stay in the holder, unlike all of the others in the Collins collection.

On a side note, sad to say that over the course of my career, I have been responsible for the death of millions (maybe billions) of chickens and tens of thousands of cows (mostly sway back milks long past prime). I have also not been a friend to the nations level of obesity. I do ask that these facts not be held against me in any BST transactions!

Thanks,
Bob

I like animals too, and I don't hunt much anymore. I was never much of a deer hunter. However, that having been said, I don't have a problem with harvesting animals for food and to keep all of the stock healthy.

Jeff and others, IMO, its a bit hypocritical to decry hunting as you talk about when you are going to eat your next juicy steak. Just because you didn't kill it yourself doesn't mean that it isn't as dead. If you ever bothered to look at how the animals you choose to eat live their lives, I suspect that you would end up having to admit that they probably lived a much more miserable life than did the one in the scan.

Kenny, it's more than a bit hypocritical -- it's a lot hypocritical, I agree; that was sort of the point I was trying to make with my post by bringing up the dinner. And I really hope that someday, preferably soon, I can stop eating meat.

Cat 09-11-2010 07:19 PM

The only thing I was thinking was: Did he make some jerky out of some of that buck? Because if he made some jerky, I would more than be willing to trade some T206s (or whatever) for some jerky. That jerky you buy in the store is crap.

You send me your address and I will make sure some finds its way to you in a few weeks hopefully. Season opens here on the 15.

Nothing like organic meat. Better than steriods, corn byproduct(major cause of obesity in America) and real cruelity to animals.

This is the first time I have posted a pick-up, but I thought these two deserved a little attention due to the Net54 connections. First of all, the 1909 Obak of Shinn is courtesy of Anthony, who went WAAAAY out of his way to make sure I ended up with it. It was one of the final two cards I needed to finish the set, and now I am down to just needing the Fitzgerald.

I was able to return the favor to another Net54'er, providing Ron with one of the two cards he needed to finish off the T207 set. And in return, heck, I got the Weaver card. A feel good story all around. Thanks guys!

I didn't see the deer pix but I DEER HUNT.......I HATE SUMMER!!!!LIVE FOR WINTER AND DEER!!!....LOL..."you can't grill it if you don't kill it"----the words of one of my heroes....Uncle Ted Nugent----......no steroids....pure clean meat.... Would rather have wild game than any "bred to be slaughtered" beef or pork any day....burns me up when someone yells its wrong to hunt and harvest the animal that provides the meat you want on your table and then go out and order that steroid laced steak, pork or chicken....and by the way, chickens and pigs are two of the nastiest animals on earth...I know, my Grandfather raised both....and nasty cows are right up there with 'em...but anyway, whats the difference.....somebody had to kill it.....slaughter it while it was strapped down or led into a "slaughter house" to have its throat cut and then hung upside down so it could "bleed out"....at least when we hunt we're in their house...they actually have the advantage....a smart deer knows when hunters enter "their" woods (and 99% of them are smart...or atleast the ones that aren't hand-fed like the deer on these ranches these so called "experts" hunt on TV...come to Northeast Alabama and hunt these mountains....what I thought...they won't)...personally, I think a deer is one of the most beautiful animals on the face of the earth and I have let a bunch walk by me and never raise the rifle of bow....but God, you do believe in God don't you?....put the animals here for a reason....and it was more than to be just admired.....it was to satisfy our need to EAT!!!(Acts 10:9-13)...OK, I'm done venting....this post was not personally directed at anyone.....just irks me to the bone to read or listen to this crap....I have nothing against anyone on this forum (or anyone that doesn't believe in hunting) and I am friends with everyone on here (even the ones I've never dealt with) and have friends that don't or won't hunt or eat wild game.....may it not have an impact on any future dealings.....I'll be quiet now and go back to shooting my bow....deer season begins in 32 days in 'Bama.....OH!!!!....and ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!;)and happy collecting:D.....and I won't be back to this thread to read folllow-up comments because I really don't like arguing...and I will disregard any emails or PMs and then laugh about it...I'm done with this conversation and I will never bring this topic up again on here...its for vintage cards...not hunting.....want to see my deer pix go to my Facebook or Myspace pages

Dont mean to go off topic here, but in relation to Wolfdogg input, I went to a Nugent concert about 2 mos ago with wife, the concert had a film of his hunting deer. I've been to concerts since 1979 and never seen anything like it.
Would be cool to see a film in a concert about card collecting. Nah, dont think it will ever happen.

Just got this puppy back from PSA - been waiting for one at a "decent" price for a long time.

The PSA population for Game 2 is 7 now. If anyone has access to their population report, can you tell me how many total stubs from the 1919 Series have been encaps by them, just curious.

I'll spend over a grand for the ticket, but I can't justify $4.95 for the pop report. It's like I spend a 300 or a grand for a program or something, yet I drive to the grocery instead of the gas station cuz milk is 50 cents cheaper.

Here are three more pick-ups. The W554 features that classic Jimmy Foxx pose and is the highest graded example by SGC. The T205 Zach Wheat was a B/S/T purchase from Tony Andrea (thanks Tony!) and the 1934 Detroit Tigers Annis-Furs card is from ebay.

The slab arrived broken and split at the seam across the bottom up to the middle. The card is fine though, so... whatever.

Jeff,
Nice T205 Wheat! I never get tired of Zach and his pimp tilt hat poses.
Mathew,
That Blue Ribbon is awesome too!
Bob

I think I may start a Zach Wheat and the Pimp Tilt Hat collection.

Small upgrade, still looking for a higher grade. Love this one though.

Not sure what happened to # 12 but a neat group !!

chaddurbin 09-19-2010 03:00 PM

from the recent group, no back damage! would trade for a similar condition in blue or green. i don't think any back is tougher, just prefer other 2 to red.

(FYI i'll start an e98 back scarcity debate when i'm ready to sell...not gonna be subtle either will link to ebay/bst)

No, actually no one will be allowed to link to ebay or the BST.
