his stats were still impressive.... especially seeing as they have him on a pitch count. Not really his fault his team cannot score a run!
|
Does anyone realize that the Strasburg card is now up to $102,000.
|
just back from the game
Took my boys to see him pitch this afternoon... struck out nine but didn't seem to have his best stuff. Never got over 98 on the radar. But the kid is for real... even if those bids aren't. No way someone is actually going to pay over $100K for that card.

i read the write up on the game and they blamed his pitching speed on the heat.... apparently you cant pitch quite as fast when it is hot out?
You never know what someone will pay for something they really want.... the high bidders have alot of feedback... remember what we were saying last week... no one would spend 16 k... the guy thought he got a great deal on the card! I seen him on tv talking about it |
That price is ridiculous, stupid, moronic and whoever pays that for that card when you could buy a house, or a great rare old card/set is a total fool.

Whatever floats their boat. I think the hype is good for the hobby at this moment. 5 years from now when the card hits $20 it will be bad for the hobby. Look at all the Pub it's getting. It may bring people back and start collecting again. As for the price. I'll never understand it, but since I'm not bidding, I don't need to understand it.
Another thing I don't understand is the variations of the 1/1's. I guess a true 1/1 would be only one? Not 10 different colored 1/1's. Just me I guess. |

Feedback of 4 now bidding it up in $200 increments... can anyone say more shill bidding going on?
|
It is probably shill bidding.
plus, I guess Im just discouraged someone can actually afford that and such. Still, as others have said, whatever floats your boat and if you have the means, then by all rights, go for it. No point furthering my already high BP and nerve quotient by arguing over this stupid card.haha. :p |

all you have to do is watch the Barrett Jackson car auction to know how much $$ guys have to spend on their hobbies....
|
the seller canceled those bids for less then 10 feedback....
|
Am I seeing things? I just looked at the lsiting and it's going for $113,500.00 with 4 days left. Do people have so much money to throw away on 1 card?
I wish I was the person that was selling that card. |
Quote:
Its still stupid as heck IMO. |
Here is a 1/2. Why is this worth only 2 percent of the 1/1????
http://cgi.ebay.com/2010-STEPHEN-STR...item2a07fbf25c |
Don't these people know they're supposed to wait 'til the last day to bid? They're shilling themselves!
Peter, there are only 2 mint 9's but there's probably 20 gem mint 10's. You'd have to mishandle these cards to get anything less then mint 9. If there is only 2, it just means people aren't grading them. |
In the begining of this thread I was shocked that the card was at $18,000.00,,,,,,,,but IMO this is ridiculous. I'm not saying it's stupid to pay alot for something you really want, I seem to do it quite often- but I also try to factor in the item holding some type of value over time----will this card really hold even 25% (and that's being generous IMO) of $100,000.00 ?????
I agree with the comments of it being their $$ and let 'em buy what makes them happy--sure--but where does common sense play a part? No doubt Strasburg is proving to be an awesome pitcher, but this early in his career would paying this much for any one of his cards be a wise move? Clayton |
I don't know whether the bids are real or not, but if some wants to spend that much then let them. What about the vintage cards that go 100k +, others would look at them and say their stupid just because it's modern shouldn't discourage the person from his hobby.
|
A factor that may not have been discussed yet is that the buyer may be doing this for publicity. Maybe this person wants to be known as the owner of the most expensive modern card?
"The modern day Honus Wagner card!" |
This seems like a memorable enough moment in the hobby. It may be setting it self up for future hobby lore. If he lives up to his expectations... You never know.
|
This one is 1/250, not 1/2
Looking at the card, it is 1 of 250... only two have been graded by PSA

I wonder when he'll end up in a Yankees uniform. I wonder what the guy who sold it the first time is thinking.
|
Anybody remember this stat line from a 20 year-old phenom in 1985?
24W 4L 1.53ERA 35GS 16CG 8 Shutouts 276.2IP 268Strikeouts 0.965 Whip Let's not forget he also came in 2nd place in Cy Young voting the year before as a 19 year-old Rookie. Imagine what his card would be worth if he came up today. ;) Oh, not to mention he also played in the biggest market in the country. |
Sort of related to this topic and the Blue autographed card. Its PSA 9, one of two. Let me ask this, Why does that make it ANY better than someone who may have one of these who didn't send it to grade?
In general, lets say you have 500 Ty cobb T 206 cards. and 100 have been graded. Someone says "one of only two graded seven" none higher. Does that make the 400 "Raw ones" not worth money (assuming they are all original/unaltered). I guess Im saying that a card being "1 of xxx" graded at that level, shouldnt mean it is the those are the only ones in that physical grade around, as some may not want to grade cards and be holding Raw ones in at least that shape. Puts a super high premium on grading, I guess.. |
Looks like the superfractor 1/1 first time buyer for $16,400 got himself a nice little profit:

Just passed 210k with 4 days left.... will we see 300k???
just saying that makes my ears bleed! |
Do you all think the seller will really get paid at this point? This just seems strange to me.
Clayton |
well the high bidder has 1400+ feedback.... will he pay.. who knows... he isnt a rookie with that feedback
card just past 260k.... i watched it climb 100k in 45 minutes.. crazy crazy crazy... |
It's funny how earlier in this thread people were discussing what they would do with the 18k the card was selling for.
If this seller was having any trouble financially then that's over now. |
Quote:
Now at this point, i hope it goes for like 100 million..........because whatever company buys it....will never recoup it....probably a Las Vegas Casino or something |
One could now buy a low grade T206 Wagner at the current price of $250,000.
|
Correction......make that $252,100. And the current high bidder has bid at least 30 times on the card today.
|
Does anybody really understand what is going on here?
|

Barry, this auction has more swinging D1cks, than a Chippendales event......its unreal |
Barry, I admit this makes little sense to me. Leon did a great job of explaining this earlier in the thread, but this price,to me, is beyond reality.
And just for the record,I don't care how anyone spends their money. If someone wants to spend $350,000.00 on this card, go for it. To me, I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of $$ on any card of a player with hardly any history in the game. And look how many "1 of 1's" keep popping up. One of one Blue, one of one red, one of one black, one of one sig orange blah blah blah............... Clayton |
it says paypal is the only method of payment... that will be interesting.
|
I think this has gone beyond bidding on a baseball card. I can't believe that anyone, even the high bidders, believe this is worth a quarter of a million dollars, and I still think it has a long way to go. Maybe a million dollars at this rate.
So I think bidders are buying something else. Maybe being able to say you bought the most "valuable" modern baseball card is worth something to somebody, I'm really not sure. But these bidders are perceiving this card in some unique way. |
Obviously the current/high bidder will not be paying for it at a quarter mill....i bet the seller is sooooo pissed since he knows there is no way he should expect payment.
|
It's already at 261K, and the high bidder has bid on it about fifty times. And there are four days left. Again, what is going on? Nothing makes any sense.
|
This guy should have done the same as the first guy that sold his 1/1 Strasburg and worked with ebay to pre-approve all bidders to make sure he was weeding out the idiots.
|
A VG Wagner T206, or this Strasburg........hhhmmmnnn........
|
Quote:
They will pay... i think companies are starting to bid now |
It's all been just fun & games since it got near $100K---it's way outta' hand now. One guy has bid over 50 times and others are just playing along.
Seller should cancel everything back to about 50K & take his chances, otherwise it's a total farce. PS: The 1914 FB guy has bid 48 times, not 50 as I stated above |
it could be the Golden Palace casino... they like to waste money on ebay!
|
Is 1Mill range possible? I can just see Olberman, Dicaprio, and Gates all on there computers doing one big pissing match for this card : )
|
It's now 310K...I say it goes for a million.

Knowing how Scott Boras likes to HYPE things to the extreme, I wouldn't put it past him to have somebody bidding on this card. That way, he can say that he represents the best rookie pitcher in MLB who has the HIGHEST priced modern baseball card in the world.

But hey, I guess $22k is peanuts compared to the other 1/1 thats going for over a quarter mil Rob :) |
i wont mentioned it just passed 600k, but people are screwing with it now.....
|
Now over $500k.
|
810k
|
Now 800K.
|
Just went up $250k in 2 mins. Crazy!
|
Make it $900,000.
What a mess! |
The 900K is a new bidder.
|
Looks like Barry's prediction of $1,000,000 will happen in the next few minutes.
|
920
|
I've never seen anything like this.
|
this is better then REA.... 6 different people are bidding.. i dont get it, there are 4 days left not 4 minutes
|
15 retractions so far.
|
I like how fifteen people "accidentally entered the wrong amount".
|
Could it surpass the T206 Gretzky/McNall Wagner ($2.8 Million) as the most ever paid for a card?
I still don't think the winning bidder will pay for this card. |
11 bids just got canceled ... back to 920K and stable.... this guy must be wetting himself! I know id be dancing around the house if it was me....
George, Weesie and myself would be movin' on up! |
I expected the million dollars to be a last minute snipe. This is happening so fast that I am starting to think there is something fishy going on.
Anyone suspect that before the night is out this is shut down? |
I can't believe that this auction has not been shut down yet.... I thought ebay would based on the previous shill bidding patterns throughout.
|
Eric- I was just thinking the same thing. If all these bids are on the level, then this is going to surpass the Wagner and become the most expensive baseball card.

next year bowman will only produce one of every card and sell them all on ebay as 1 of 1s
|
the two guys really going at it have over 1778 feedback... doesn't sound like a shill account no matter how ridiculous this is getting.
I think this is turning into a pissing contest between guys with too much money! Its not about the card any more, its about winning! |
Maybe it is the Nigerian Prince who is always trying to give me money, maybe he found something else to spend his "money" on :D

7 different bidders have bid over 950. Yeah right.
