My kind of thread. Some great stuff, guys. I've posted 5 cards not typically found in your grandfather's attic.

barrysloate 07-22-2009 11:47 AM

Bruce- I purchased the Birdsall as well as the other ten Boston players from a woman who was selling them on ebay. She claimed she pulled all the Wright material out of a dumpster!

That's even better than her grandfather's attic.:)

aaroncc 07-22-2009 01:11 PM

I have yet to see another one of these. This is a U.K. studio.

TBob - love the card but I'm curious, can we be certain it isn't off an different notebook... one produced after the E95 notebooks? I only ask because the left side of the card appears to have black frame-like lines.

mzm55:

Who is the guy in the top cdv?

GaryPassamonte 07-22-2009 05:40 PM

I believe the player in the "top CdV" is Johnny Ryan. Along with this Warren CdV, he is also pictured on a Warren cabinet in full Boston uniform. This is interesting because he never played for Boston. Maybe others can solve this apparent mystery.

mzm55 07-22-2009 06:01 PM

Gary's correct, it's Johnny Ryan. Do you have an image of the team cabinet, Gary?

I believe Scott Forest addressed Ryan and his interesting career in a publication years ago but I don't remember the exact details.

barrysloate 07-22-2009 06:01 PM

Gary is correct, it's Johnny Ryan.

Wow, seeing all of these extremely rare cards is jaw-dropping!

Too bad I have none to contribute. Ah well, I am just as content browsing!:D

GaryPassamonte 07-22-2009 06:06 PM

The team cabinet is pictured in the December 2005 Sotheby's/SCP Auction catalogue. It is in Lot #1.

GaryPassamonte 07-22-2009 06:08 PM

I should have said individual cabinet instead of team cabinet.

I wont post any high grade E98s (or E93s since thats Jim B's department) but here are a couple of 1/1 cards.

I post these too much...

But here are my top 3 unique "mystery" cards :)

Mystery Ruth Premium (either a prototype R309-2, or a R340?)
http://centuryoldcards.com/images/1933r340ruth.jpg
Unique, extra wide green border and green name plaque, better photo quality than the R309-2, different style easel. Some have said it might be a R340 Sport Kings Premium (unissued as planned, see wrapper scan)

ca.1941 D-unc. Kroger Bread
http://centuryoldcards.com/images/1941krogerriddle.jpg
unique, never seen another...yet

postwar unique Aaron
http://centuryoldcards.com/images/19...rbeeraaron.jpg
discovered on eBay 2 years ago, unique, never seen another...yet
(different style than the more common HR Derby cards, players name moved from bottom to top and beer logo placed at bottom)

Rob D. 07-22-2009 07:51 PM

Frank,

I never get tired of seeing that Aaron.

tbob 07-22-2009 08:21 PM

JimB- thanks.
Jon- fair question. I don't think so though. The Chance and Kling have the typical light paper feel (like the b&w E97s proofs) which is different from the notebook cover cards I have felt which feel "heavier." Whether or not it is a "proof" I guess we'll never know but the trio of cards, Chance, Kling and Davis Cleveland pegs this group at 1913 as 1912 was the only year Davis played for Cleveland, 1912 was the last year Kling played for Boston NL, and Chance was hired after the 1912 season ended to manage NY in 1913. It makes sense that a set was contemplated for 1913 but never issued. The 3 players in existence are all in the E95/E96 set and use the same photos.

I love all these "What is it?" posts. There's so much we don't know.

Brian- Those Kut Outs are neat. I have only seen a handful in my short career. As for these Middy's which they remind me of, I have seen only a few....if that many.

Thanks Gary, Barry and mzm55 for the info on Johnny Ryan.

Newsboy John L. Sullivan

1 Attachment(s)
I sold off my baseball card collection a few years ago to focus on boxing cards. This is a Newboy Cabinet of John L. Sullivan. It's the only one known to exist. I like to consider this the boxing equivalent of discovering a Newsboy Cap Anson. The N566 Anson doesn't exist (to the best of our knowledge), but imagine the hobby buzz if one was discovered........

Wow, Barry. From a dumpster to ebay. Proof that it's still possible to find great stuff.
