St Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles in 1954. Moss was traded to White Sox in early 1955. So, its spring training 54 or 55.

Thanks...since the Orioles trained in AZ in 1954, so it must be 1955

We shall see. I feel pretty confident a 5k card in Jan is not all the sudden a 30k+ card in March. This happens on occasion in every type of market.

The episode I watched read it was from 2019 so pre-covid.

Hi Dave

Sure was a nice 1-2 punch to start the game. Most remember Jackie as the 2nd Baseman for the Dodgers.
But, he played at 1st base for the entire 1947 season. Eddie Stanky was the Dodgers 2nd Baseman in '47.

Small Traditions did a nice write-up about this issue, which I will quote from to explain it:

"Even more obscure than the Bond Bread Exhibits ... is a fourth and final version, referred to as the 1947 Bond Bread Dual Sided or Perforated set. Virtually nothing is known about this set other than that it was issued in at least two different 24-card perforated panels by a company called Elgee. To call them scarce, even extraordinarily scarce, is a gross understatement. Until Small Traditions graded the [PSA 5] Robinson offered in this lot, only one other had ever been recognized by each PSA and SGC."

I've done a lot of research on "Elgee" and come up with squat from the pertinent era. About all I can say is that there are three known examples of the card, one SGC and two PSA, and perhaps some raw ones tucked away in collections that haven't seen the light of day. The only remaining research to do is to figure out whether the card was issued in 1947 or later. The ballplayers in the set are not helpful in that regard thus far, so I will probably have to start searching for source materials for the movie stars and try to see if any of them would make 1947 an anachronism.

Never seen that card before, Adam. Super cool.

'53 Dodgers were the winningest NL team of all time until the 2020 Dodgers. On their way to another World Series showdown with the Yanks, they beat the Giants in September, but lost an all-star in Carl Furillo. He got into a fight with Leo Durocher, the new Giants manager, and broke his hand. Missed the postseason where the Dodgers again lost to the Yankees.

The Brawl. Jackie scoring last run of that game. And a stub.

Brett, I’m loving your Jackie collection. That is a beautiful ’53. Has anyone else noticed the blue mark in the sky next to Jackie’s hat on the ‘53? When I first got mine in hand I thought it was a pen mark. I wonder if it was a stray mark from the painter’s brush on the original or a printing mark on the card. Has anyone seen a picture of the original painting? I know it was auctioned off with a bunch of the other ‘53 paintings in the 80’s, but I’ve never seen a picture of the actual painting.

Dewey 03-18-2021 08:11 PM

Thanks, Aaron.

Funny you mention it. I had the same experience with that mark!

Out of vintage cards to show.

Here's a modern card signed by Rachel. And the corresponding wirephoto (1963).

This is the only one I currently own, but it's always been my favorite image if his on a card.

Dewey 03-20-2021 01:47 PM

Not my prettiest card. And it is not a Jackie card either.

This has to be one of my favorite all-time Net54 threads, hands down.

Think we've seen all of these now, so hopefully fair game to see them all together. What a great subject!

Beautiful set with nice attention to centering, Jason. You could pay off (or buy another) house with that handful of cards.

Exhibitman 03-20-2021 03:55 PM

was there a 1951 Robinson?

I have a few of these:

Beauties!

His only appearance that I know of is the '51 Topps team card.

This day in Dodgers history. 3/22/53

A spring training shot of Jackie and Billy Cox. The slug suggests Cox may be traded. He played two more seasons. And had one whale of a '53 World Series.

For anyone looking to part with a very low grade 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson for my PC, please let me know. My favorite issue of all the Jackies.

Can't seem to upload the Jackie cards I have, but here's the pride and joy of my collection. Not worth as much as the 48 Leaf and 49 Bowman I have, but it's pretty amazing. There's a random signature on the other side of the ball, but it presents as a single signed.

I like the exhibit card . The image is better then his lazy eye rookie. Plus some were made in 1948 .

Exhibitman 03-26-2021 05:28 PM

I have never seen definitive proof of that, Dustin. 1949 cards had "An Exhibit Card" on the bottom:

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...age%20Comp.jpg

See the Paige on the left. I do not recall seeing a Robinson with that notation. He was definitely in the 1950 and 1951 runs; here are two salesman samples with checklists from those years:

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ist%20card.jpg

(this one is a 1950 because it has 1949 ROY Don Newcombe and the 1949 pennant winning teams; the 1948 pennant winners were the Indians and Braves, so the 1949 checklist would have had them listed)

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ard%20edit.jpg

This one is a 1951 because it has the Phillies on it (1950 pennant winners).

I don't have ESCO issued checklists for 1948 or 1949, so if you have something, please share it.
