Posted By: JimCrandell
I think you're right Nick--he vowed never to go back again.....and the industry celebrated.

He used to have a two-pronged business model--one was auctioning cards taht he often described as mint but which often weren't and buying cards cheap from unsuspecting sellers so he could flip them two a couple other dealers. Now its just the latter.

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
"Ted Z, where is my back up????"

Here I am guy....I wasn't going to read this thread....hate these bashing threads....as they are
meaningless; and, only serve as a distraction from the meaningful topics on this Forum.

I've known Alan Rosen since 1981 when our booths were adjacent at a Show in Kenilworth, NJ.
Alan and I have done some great deals over all these years and he was very fair to me on all
our transactions. I've sold him "tons" of stuff, and bought some really scarce cards from him....

Such as a complete 1949 BOWMAN Pacific Coast League set back in 1984.

Or, many of the very scarce 1949 LEAF 2nd Series cards from his great find in 1989. This find,
incidently, revealed to the hobby that the Leaf Satchel Paige card was really short-printed....
by a factor of at least 5 to 1 over all the other 48 cards that were short-printed in the scarce
2nd Series. Confirming a theory I have had about this Paige card, dating back to 1982.

I also acquired from Alan many of the Near Mint 1952 Topps Hi#s from his legendary 1952 Topps
find in the '80s. He was the man who pulled it off, and the entire hobby greatly benefited from it.

I'll finish this by telling you that at the 2003 National in A/C my booth was once again adjacent
to Alan's. For me it was a great Show selling. I didn't buy too much and what cards "walked-in",
I passed on them to Alan. He bought several of these "walk-ins" and very generously compen-
sated me for them.

T-Rex TED

Posted By: boxingcardman
I'd say that since the advent of ebay, 3rd party grading and so many consignment auction houses his profile in the hobby has collapsed. His market niche as a wholesale buyer and reseller just isn't needed.

I also happen to find that his overtly mercenary and predatory style typifies a certain class of dealer who leaves customers with the distinct feeling that they've been fleeced, which is not a good image for the hobby and is also why he was such a great target for parody.

And yes, that 2006 Anaheim thing was worth the price of admission. That first day people were actually baiting him by asking innocently why he was over there in the corner. You could have steamed a tamale on his head. Wasn't anyone's fault; the convention center simply rerouted the crowds.

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc

Mr. Mint is Angry!!
Posted By: Eric Brehm
I did business with Alan on a regular basis back in the 1980's, but haven't talked to him since I got back in the hobby a couple of years ago. I always thought he was a hustler to be sure, but not a scammer. I remember once I agreed on the phone to buy a T206 Cobb card from him, and sent him a check. Later I received a refund in the mail, with an explanation that he had discovered a flaw in the card that he knew I wouldn't be happy with. When I called to get more details, he said that he had bought some T206's that he determined had been micro-trimmed, and he couldn't in good conscience sell altered cards to anyone else. He was not happy about it at all.
