However, in the future I will avoid ALL topics about other auction houses. Thanks and hopefully there is no harm no foul with Barry. I was speaking 100% as a collector. Those who know me, hopefully would vouch that I'm not arrogant as I seemingly sound.

And I would dread a final night crash. I sell alot on ebay and like that format, but for my catalogs I will stick with what I have. While the last night does have its level of stress, I do enjoy speaking with many people who I only get to talk to during the auction. And more than half the bids are emailed to me anyway, so I get a little bit of both worlds.<br /><br />And it is true that the N28 is an 1888 issue, and thus N172 is the true rookie card. My error, and I wish someone caught it earler as I would have posted a correction.

First I screwed up the phone number, then I messed up on the registration rules, and called just two hours before the auction ended. Nevertheless, Barry, or whoever took care of my bid, treated me with respect and dignity. They probably spent more time on me than my bid was worth. I was only bidding on one of the lower priced cards in the auction, but he made me feel like I was bidding on the featured item. I will let that admission stand on its own merit.<br /><br />As for Barry's auctions, yes, they are archaic in this online era. But, the one thing about Barry's auctions that I know in my heart to be 100% true and I cannot say this about a single other auction house is that I will not be a victim of shill bidding. I just don't have the same comfort level with any other place, no offense. We should all only hope that Barry's auctions proliferate.

But Eric Burden has no voice left and was embarrassing, and he used to be among the best. Some people age better than others.<br /><br />Edited to say thanks Jeff, I do treat customers' ceiling bids with tremendous respect. If they feel comfortable enough leaving them with me I know I have a big responsibility not to let them down.

I agree, it was just awful.<br /><br />As a side note, Dave Van Ronk and Bob Dylan did very respectable versions of "House of the Rising Sun" in the early sixties. But after the Animals did their version in 1964, I don't think anyone ever attempted the song again. It was so good that it became almost a sacred cow.

Posted By: <b>barrysloate</b><p>Brian- the auction closed at about 11:15. As far as whether lots were won by board members or not, I didn't do a survey but it was a mixed bag. Many of my customers are oldtimers and I am amazed by how many of them have never heard of Net54. But what I do find interesting is a high percentage of lots are won by new bidders, much more so than old ones. I guess many of them have dropped out of the hobby.<br /><br />Edited to add I don't know how many new registrants found me from Net54. Many do, some find out in other ways. One woman googled "Duke Kahanamoku" and because I had one of his cards found the whole auction and won the card.
