Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Dan: Groan.

Cat: I found it a bit tough to watch the cross. All I can say is that I do it quite a bit differently. As for Jami, she is a very nice person and very smart. Alas, I was not on her show today -- in fact I rarely do CT TV anymore as it tends to interfere with my ability to take as long of a lunch as I can humanly possibly take.

Peter: I'm just a guest so I basically sit there and say whatever fool thing crosses through my brain at the time. This usually is not a problem except when I do morning talk radio in NYC which is a few times a month. I have to wake up at 330 am for a show beginning at 530 am and inevitably I say some pretty awful things. A portion of the show is broadcast on a local NYC television station which, as you can imagine, has a very large viewership. A few weeks back the TV host asked me what I thought of the Britney debacle and I replied, clearly without much rest, "I think that she is a good example as to why abortion should be legalized through the 75th trimester." As I heard the words come out of my mouth I thought, "please, you didn't just say that."

Posted By: barrysloate
Jeff- are you on Court TV regularly? I like Nancy Grace but she is a prosecutor and gives all defense attorneys a hard time.

Edited to add Jeff and I were posting at the same time and he was answering my question.

Posted By: Joe D.
The only clip I watched so far is the CourtTV one - and it was awesome.

I spent a brief moment of my life as a student in Law School and I definitely can see the allure of being a litigator.

Talk with Jeff for 5-minutes and you will see he has a passion for what he does. It is very cool to see a person have such passion and drive in his profession (whatever profession that might be).

edit to say: Barry - I think Nancy Grace is phenomenal - and I disagree with most everything she says. She was a regular on Larry King (when I used to watch it)... it was basically the Laci Peterson show at that time (thats all they talked about). I thought Nancy was awesome... and I disagreed with her almost always.

Posted By: peter chao
Joe,

Criminal law is one of the more glamorous parts of practicing law, Jeff will be one of the first to tell you that you are in Court often.

In civil litigation, my line of work, it's not so glamorous. You work 40 hours in order to be in front of a judge for 1 hour.

For nonlitigation type work, it's paperwork and more paperwork.

Peter

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Joe, thanks for the kind words. And for the Chase Orange Borders.

Funny Nancy Grace story: first time I'm on her show she was ragging on me and I just started to abuse her pretty badly. The case was about a woman who killed her boyfriend after stalking him for some time. Anyway, I start to make fun of Nancy and say that I'm sure she knows what it's like to stalk a guy who's no longer into her--a joke, but still. I'm in a studio next door to where she was doing the show..and during the next commercial break I hear the door fly open and Nancy, who's like 5 feet tall, comes charging over to me. I honestly thought she was going to hit me. She flings her arms around me and says, "great TV!" And then offered me some corn chips she had in a bag in her hand. Strange but funny and endearing.

Posted By: barrysloate
Joe- Nancy Grace had a fiance who was murdered right before they were to get married- and that is what brought her to the field of law. I also think that is why she views all criminals (even the ones who haven't been convicted yet) in such a harsh light. But she's really smart, and I like smart people, so I'll overlook the rest.

Posted By: Joe D.
Barry -

I didn't know that about her fiance and why she got into law.

Many times I think her logic is flawed (by design, not out of lack of smarts), and she is obviously biased. I would watch her on TV and think she was dead wrong - but I still loved her.

Jeff -
great story. For some really great TV, I would have liked to see you two go head-to-head in a court room.

John -
Barry doesn't like to drink alone - so you are going to have to buy me a draft as well.

Posted By: barrysloate
Joe- you've got a deal! Oh you asked John to buy for you...well, it's my treat, what the hey!

Nancy Grace has never gotten over that trauma, and it shows in her responses. When Scott Peterson was up for trial, she saw a piece of her past in the case, and she just lost it. You could see her every night on Larry King just wanting to see Peterson fry.
