Beckett's Baseball Card Hall of Fame

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
I remember back when the McGwire and Griffey rookie cards were hot thinking that it was just so ridiculous that these two guys that hadn't done all that much had rookie cards worth as much as some of the all-time greats' rookie cards. Sure, the cards were worth a lot at some time but wasn't it obvious that unless the players hit a zillion HRs in their careers that the cards' value would have to go down? It's not like there were only 7 PSA 8s in existence (more like 10,000 a piece in PSA 8 and above). So, while I collected the sets with those cards in it I never bothered to hunt down additional examples. Did cards like these change the landscape of card collecting? I suppose they did for the larger population and I was affected in an indirect manner. But so did Brocade Communications and JDS Uniphase change the tech market; neither one of them affected my investing outlook either as I wouldn't have bothered buying their shares after a runup from 1 to 150. While the great sets of the 50s aren't remembered perhaps as seminal happenings, if it weren't for them my father wouldn't have pushed me into collecting.

Not popular or well like, but there is no denying the impact he had. The same is true for the Griffey card on the card hobby.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

I can't divulge who or what cards are on the list, but I think most everyone here on the board will be much happier with these selections. The author didn't want to have multiple cards from the same person and he also wanted to represent as many different sets as possible.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
I am really amazed at the debates on this thread over '80s and
'90s cards. In the 1970's thru the mid-80s the current rookie
cards, or who at any given moment was "hot" would be the "card-
de-jour". And, these fads would be short-lived, or perhaps last
thru a given season.

However, the Anson's, the "King" Kelly's, the Cobb's, the Joe
Jackson's, the Ruth's, the Gehrig's, the DiMaggio's, the Ted
Williams', the Jackie Robinson's the Leroy Paige's....etc, etc,
where in constant demand throughout these decades.

So, its really a joke to me the debates here regarding Griffey,
McGuire, Ripken, Canseco; and, all the rest of these NEO-CARDS
with respect to the original intent of this thread.

So, I am sure I will have to dodge some "flack" for saying this
But, what do I really know....I am just a 66-year old "Paleo-
Poofto".....that's Greek.....but I am not going to tell you.
