1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: barrysloate
As a final note: it is extremely unlikely that this collector will ever sell any part of what he owns. It will be passed down to his son, and may stay in the family for generations. So don't hold you breath on that one. But I know that at some point in the future, perhaps by next year, he will have it all available on display and will allow people to see it. But not yet.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Hal Lewis
As long as this collector is lucky enough to have a son that appreciates the value (sentimental and historical more than monetary) of the collection and will treat it with the respect it deserves ...

then I would RATHER see it get kept in the family than broken up and sold. I hope to pass my collection down to my son as well (but he is only 10 right now and would trade those old ugly black and white cards for some new glossy foil cards).

More importantly ... I want to hop a plane and come see it when it goes on display ... or maybe Barry can arrange a private viewing for loyal collectors?? (seriously?)

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Julie Vognar
On my P and S, and ss far as I know all the ones with Mr. Peck on the back--nice to know that!-- the "C"s on the front of all the uniforms of the Cincinattis are very pale. But I saw one once--with a different back, on which the "C"s were all healthy and bright. Does anyone own this P and S, or know which back it is?

Anxious to see the book!Wish MY son were interested in something besides reviewing movies...I mean, Profoundly interested.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: barrysloate
Rather strangely, although the scope and quality of this collection is beyond anyone's comprehension, it has basically been in storage for as long as he has had it. He is currently in the process of building a wing onto his house which will be to display his many collections (besides baseball) so I guess at that time he will be happy to have visitors. And since his collection will be one of the chapters of the Smithsonian book, maybe he is ready to raise his profile a bit. If you are ever able to see it one day, you will be amazed to see just how far someone with both the resources and determination can build something so historically significant and aesthetically beautiful. I haven't even seen the whole thing, but probably nearly all of it. I have been selling rarities for 20 years and I have never handled more than a dozen or so pieces that even come close to the qulaity of this. I too am anxious to see it when it is finally all available to see.
Julie, I know what you are saying about the "C's" being light on the uniforms. I think some of the images are stronger than others, that has been my experience among the ones I have seen. But the "C's" always seem to be the weak point of that image. Since they were obviously red, maybe that just didn't photograph that well.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Andy Baran
Julie,

The Peck & Snyder with the very "Strong C's" as you called them is the CDV that I recently sold to Hal. I'm sure he can post the picture.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Andy Baran
Would the anonymous owner of the Peck & Snyders be the same person who owns the only Just So Cy Young and 1 of the 2 Four Base Hits Kelly's?

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: barrysloate
That would be correct.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Hal Lewis
The "C's" are VERY clear and bold on this card ... even MORE so in person than on the scan:

In fact, the photo on this card is SO CLEAR that it looks like it was taken last week. Andy can verify.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: paul
Julie, your Hugh Duffy had a bat when I owned it. It was light and did kind of blend into the background, but it was there. Maybe it got lost in the mail.

Paul

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Andy Baran
I'm not talking about Leon. It's the guy who owns the OTHER Four Base Hits Kelly.
|
1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Andy Baran
I can verify that Hal is correct. If there is a Peck & Snyder with a better quality photo, I'd like to see it. The person who sold me that particular card told me that it had been in a family album most likely for 131 years, thus preserving the photo quality. They discovered it in the album in 2000 when I purchased it.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Julie Vognar
it's disappeared since..like the cheshire cat. I know it's not Leon--or rather, I thought not. But I was just bluffing. I really don't know. But Jay knows...thumbscrews, please.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Andy Baran
I know too though I've never met or spoken to him. Hopefully I'll get to see the card (and the Just So Cy Young) some day

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Hal Lewis
I have always loved his dry wit and sarcastic style of journalism ever since he started at ESPN ...

so this would give me even more reasons to be a big KO fan!

I would also like to know if KO ever visits this board?
|
1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Andy Baran
It's not Keith, though he may be one of the few who has a collection that could rival this one. I originally thought that Keith may have been the owner as well. I've actually spoken to Keith via e-mail in the past. I saved the message to show my son when he gets older Nice guy.

Please don't bother asking me who it is. Even though I don't know him, if he doesn't want to be known, I'm not going to be the one to spill the beans. I hope to view his collection some day, and don't plan on doing anything to ruin my chances. I believe that several people on the board actually know him personally besides Barry.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Hal Lewis
I don't want to do anything to jeapordize my chances of seeing the collection either!!!!

PS - I still like Keith Olberman, and I agree that getting an e-mail from him would be cool. (are you out there, Keith?)

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: leon
I have briefly met the mystery gentleman and he is just that..."a gentleman". I hope in due time we will be enlightened by his magnificent collection. Please don't ask as I will also "not" divulge his name. Best regards all.....

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: barrysloate
Yes, Leon knows who it is. I know they have met. And he had nice things to say about Leon, too. He appreciated all the nice cards Leon had on display.
No, it is not Keith Olbermann, who does have a wonderful collection but has almost exclusively cards. This collection only has a few cards (and among the best in existence) but is mostly an historical collection, rich in the 1845-1875 era mostly. I'll speak to him in a few days and see if he wants to introduce himself on the board. A little shy, but a great guy.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Hal Lewis
Out of curiosity ...

does he have a copy of the 1868 Chadwick "The Game of Baseball," and if not, would he like to trade something for one?

From what you have told me previously, he is probably the guy who owns the one copy that you think is nicer than the one you just sold me!

Jay Miller: I just got your e-mail, and I appreciate the offer but I am unable to buy them at this time. They sound great, however! Thanks!

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Hal Lewis
I'll leave it up to Jay if he wants to go public...

but I think it is fair to say that this is one of those situations where Jay is not really selling ... unless Crazy Hal was willing to pay through the nose again.

(Not knocking Jay, since he is the source of most of my great stuff ... and I want to stay on his list of potential buyers ... but I had a LOT more money BEFORE I ever ran into Jay!!!)

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: barrysloate
Hal,
Yes, he has the finest copy of the book, and no, it is not available. I know I am speaking on his behalf without asking him but I know him well and that is what the answer will be. Sorry.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Hal Lewis
Oh well ... I will remain in second place and hope to someday be able to meet the First Place gentleman.

1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: barrysloate
Hal,
I just reread your note- you said you want to trade one of your copies to him, not buy his copy. Sometimes my eyes play tricks on me. No, since he has one, he doesn't need another. I think that answers your question properly. Sorry for the confusion.
|
1869 Peck & Snyder Observation & Question
Posted By: Hal Lewis
You are correct ... I was hoping to trade him one of my extra copies for anything that he might have "doubles" of ... but apparently he has no need for it.

Unless, of course, you were to accidentally drop his only copy into the fireplace on your next visit...
