As username "hammertime" it feels only right that I respond to this thread. Anyway the last line is my favorite. If you have "open" extended bidding then there is absolutely no reason for anyone to get their bids in early.

And regarding extended bidding, I understand the idea, but the whole "if at least one lot gets a bid the entire auction is extended" business that many auction houses do just seems asinine. Has there EVER been a case where zero lots have received an additional bid and the entire auction is ended? I'm willing to wager that has never happened. So then what's the point.

Even if one is following many items, a refresh of the bids page and a few clicks—even on many items—seems doable to me in a few minutes in the vast majority of cases.

We have gotten a handful of complaints that our 15 minutes isn't long enough.

I’m just happy we are through the stage where auctions are kept open for an extra day at the last minute due to technical reasons.

No, I don't think so. His point was that Goldin's explanations are confusing and misleading. Your point is that if you make it a research project, you can get to the right answer. I agree with you both, but they are different points.

With no repercussions, questions, or bidders being hindered for the next fiasco.

Stuff trumps all

Yes, there are. And no, I won’t tell you what they are because I don’t need the additional competition 😂

If that makes you happy, good for you.

I wouldn’t consider two clicks on a website or reading an email to be a research project.

Sorry for the issue of the OP. We switched to lot by lot bidding 5+ years ago and this is the first time in several years I have been alerted to an issue.
That said, the language in the rules and FAQ was adjusted after the eBay purchase of goldin, and perhaps to some it became less clear. As a result of this post I have informed my marketing team to be highly explicit and detailed in all the emails that go out in final day and carefully explain extended bidding so that there is no possible misunderstanding on how it works.
I have also linked this thread to the attorneys to see what can be done to ensure there is no possible misinterpretation and bidders like you are not disappointed a lot closed unexpectedly.
Again, sorry for your frustration. Feel free to email me directly ken@goldin.com
