Lets go mets!!!!!!!

bk400 10-09-2024 06:26 PM

We're on to California!

I know Ohtani is the best player in baseball, and I know the Dodgers probably don't even make the playoffs this year without his bat.

But Lindor is the real MVP.

Let's Go Mets!!!

Mets

The Mets are playing inspired baseball. I'm thrilled the always adorable Bryce
Harper gets to watch from the couch- perfect!

Metsies on an amazing unfathomable roll right now. I don't know how this insanity continues . . .but I hope it does. Been a long wait for this level craziness in Flushing.

The vibes at CitiField are insane. Steve Cohen was in the parking lot crashing tailgaiting parties and posing for pictures.

I will say that I feel badly for the Phillies fans. They are a proper fan base.

Peter_Spaeth 10-11-2024 05:33 PM

I still hate the Mets because of 1986, but that said it's a pretty exciting team and just shows you how unpredictable baseball can be.

I was in law school in Boston in 86. I was well known as the big Met fan in my class. Was quite a scene. I watched most of the series by myself. Was very glad the Sox eventually won a WS. Really a terribly unfortunate deal for Buckner, who was a great player and a good guy.

I was at the Boston games, it was great baseball even if the Mets won. I blame Calvin Schiraldi much more than Buckner, and the only thing worse was watching the repeat horror in Game 7. People tend to forget the Buckner play only tied up the Series, it didn't end it. The Sox had a 3-0 lead in Game 7.

I did hate them but in addition to the incomparable Gooden, they had some really good players who were fun to watch: Carter, Strawberry, Hernandez, Dykstra.

bk400 10-11-2024 08:45 PM

I am absolutely biased, but the 1986 Mets were the greatest team in history. The Red Sox put up a good fight, but even when the Mets were down 3-0 in Game 7, the outcome seemed inevitable.

Totally agree that Buckner took more of the blame than he should.

Well, Mets - Dodgers is going to be fun. When Yamamoto doesn't have the yips, he looks untouchable. He might be the key to the series for the Dodgers.

LOL disagree that it was inevitable, what happened is they brought back Calvin Schiraldi. I will never forget when they flashed to Rice smiling in the dugout after the Sox went up 3-0. I felt pretty good about the game at that point too, curse or no curse.

Pretty evenly matched teams, lots of stars. Sox were not exactly hurting with Clemens, Boggs, Rice and Evans, and Baylor still capable as well.

bk400 10-13-2024 09:12 PM

Well, glad we got that out of our system.

Peter_Spaeth 10-13-2024 09:17 PM

Ugly if you're a Mets fan. But the great thing about baseball is a one run win tomorrow would even the series and give the Mets home field advantage.

Peter_Spaeth 10-14-2024 05:40 PM

To borrow from Bill Spaceman Lee, asked after game 2 of the 1975 World Series how he would characterize the series to that point: "Tied."

Jeez Louise…

bk400 10-14-2024 05:53 PM

Stop the presses. I've found the key to beating the Dodgers: hold the top five guys in the order hitless for the next three games.

I'm just holding my breath and hoping that Ohtani doesn't blow up Citi Field. He's kind of due for one of those crazy runs.

bk400 10-16-2024 09:07 PM

F**king Dodgers and all their home runs.

Well, glad we got that out of our system.

Precisely! My favourite example is the 1960 World Series victory of the Pirates over the Yankees.

;)

bk400 10-16-2024 11:36 PM

Ok, this might come off as a bit of a rant, but the tone is meant to be lighthearted:

1) I watched a replay of Ohtani's home run earlier tonight. First, there is no way that guy is 210 lbs. I'm not an expert in sizing up other men, but he looks to me like he's 250 or 260.

2) I read that he holds the vertical jump record for the Angels AND the Dodgers. At 250 lbs, give or take, that's not normal. I think the Mets have to lodge a protest and get that guy tested for steroids.

3) You know who's not on steroids? Francisco Lindor.

Let's Go Mets!!!

Agreed! Just because MLB wants a World Series between the Dodgers and the Yankees is not a reason to throw the rulebook out the window.

:(

Ha! For the avoidance of doubt, I don't actually think Ohtani is on the juice. I just think he's a freak of nature that I wish was playing for the Mets.

But I understand why a guy like Ohtani wouldn't want to play for the Mets.

bk400 10-17-2024 11:01 PM

I have to stop yelling at my computer screen. You know what was sad? I'm watching the MLB.tv broadcast, and at the end of the game, you can hear some Mets fans saying that their team sucks. Those guys must be the Yankees fans who couldn't get tickets to the Guardians game. Or maybe they're also Jets fans and have PTSD.

The Mets don't suck. They've outperformed expectations. But let's face it: you're not going to beat the Dodgers if you let f**king Ohtani blast one and walks three times for Mookie Betts. You can't walk like a million guys and then when it's your turn, leave the bases loaded a million times.

It's uncanny in how many games giving up walks, especially two out walks, are what undid the losing team.

BobbyStrawberry 10-18-2024 10:31 AM

Well, it was a fun year. No one expected them to even make the playoffs, so this was quite a run.

We seriously need some pitching upgrades next year if a championship run is in the cards.

Fans of JIM: Jets, post 1995 Milbury/Wang Islanders, Mets

We have a defeatist atitude. I'm lucky enough to have seen the Cup years and the '86 run. But these younger fans and Jets fans? Not a lot to root for especially when there is a better option in town. (Not so much for hockey, but football and baseball...the alternative is superior.)

The reverse jinx is working so far...

bk400 10-18-2024 05:39 PM

That's right, guys. Make them beat you at home.

It feels a little like 1986. Freddie Freeman with the bum ankle and all.

Peter_Spaeth 10-18-2024 06:32 PM

Huge win to extend this. Far from over, it's baseball, anything can happen these next two games.

Balticfox 10-18-2024 08:01 PM

Well we can still hope!

bk400 10-20-2024 10:11 PM

It was a good run for the good guys.

It's freezing cold again in the DC area.

Wanted to send out some Mets love to get people thru this cold day.

There is A LOT to like about this video, from the various music montages highlighted by Duran Duran's "Wild Boys" (Dyksra and Backman) to Roger McDowell and Howard Johnson breaking down how to light their teammates shoes on fire, aka the "Hot Foot", to various brawls.

It's going to be tough not to cheer for the Mets to flounder in 2025 after their Juan Soto signing left such a bad taste in my mouth. I wish Soto had stayed with the Yankees so I'd have yet another reason to continue hating the Yankees.

:(

There's no shortage of reasons to dislike the Yankees.

+1 This is a great video. One of the things I love about that team is that they only had one future Hall of Famer, Gary Carter, but they still managed to win. They worked together in a way that few teams have since.

I'd say the 1997 Indians (even though they didn't win) and the Big Papi-era Red Sox are the only ones that even come close.

And speaking of the Hall of Fame, I can live with Wally Backman not being in the Hall (colorable argument that he didn't have the counting stats), but the fact that Keith Hernandez isn't in the Hall keeps me up at night.

Snapolit1 02-03-2025 06:53 AM

Wally Backman in the Hall of Fame? From one diehard Mets fan to another, you must be kidding. A career 13 war player. He missed the Hall by a fair amount.

A couple of cards:

Great cards!

So the Mets released “Get Metsmerized” one day into the ‘86 season, but were cocky enough to guarantee a World Series win (well at least George Foster who ended up being released later in the season, and HoJo did during their segments).

I feel like Dykstra and “Rook” Kevin Mitchell were the strongest MCs….

Thanks for sharing this! I had not seen this before, and as awesome as it is, I kind of understand why. (I thought George Foster was pretty good as the leadoff man.)
