This one was in November, but just getting around to it.

Everything is very nice but Gary, your 1871 Boston composite is my favorite. Aside from the obvious I like the reference to 10th and 11th man.

Been waiting a while for this to arrive, and he’s rough but beautiful at the same time.

Thrilled to get this 1917 Sporting News record book with Joe Jackson on the cover. I had one 25 years ago and sold it for more than I paid for this one.

Amazing pick-up, Gary. Three HOFers and one who should be. Too bad you had to pay for those other guys to get Barnes!
|
Thanks, Bruce.
Michael- Spalding and the Wrights have cost me a bundle through the years. |

Just grabbed this mislabeled Dolph Camilli (rookie? do we call Zeenuts rookies?) off COMC for what I'd consider to be a steal!
|
I get it, there's some minor "foxing" to the corners, but a 2?!

Nice finish for the year for me. Thrilled to add the Ted Williams premium RC and upgraded my M101-6 Mendelsohn Walter Johnson!
And this Ruth photo has to be one of the coolest images out there! 1916 type 1 rookie era Ruth in a fur coat with a shotgun hunting in the woods while visiting the Draper-Maynard factory. in the middle is Hoblitzell with a pistol and another teammate (I believe...?) with a shotgun and in the vintage Red Sox team sweater. I know he looks familiar but am not sure who it is if anyone can identify? |
Another RPPC catcher

Some 25+ years ago I was set up at the Chicago Sun Times show in Rosemont, IL (now called the Donald Stevens Convention Center). The Sun Times show was 3 or 4 times a year and I always set up in the mid to late 90s. I dealt in strictly pre WW2 cards, photos, etc. At one of the shows a dealer approached my booth and asked if I’d like to see some vintage cards he acquired in a large deal for modern cards. He said he had no use for them since he only dealt in modern. I checked out what he had and was shocked - he had 20 or 25 S74 White Silks and most (or all) had the ultra rare Red Sun backs! And a lot of them did not have the horizontal creases through the middle! The highlight was a gorgeous Ty Cobb with the Red Sun back and no crease! It was absolutely beautiful and the front shined like new. I held on to them for a couple years then sold them in a Mastro auction. They were not graded and I always regretted letting the Cobb go!
Well, I’m absolutely overjoyed to get the Cobb back! So grateful and excited to get this card back (even though it cost 10x what I paid for the whole group). |
Congrats Erik, Chris and Aaron

Wow! What an incredible December for the Net54 clan! I particularly love the JA Pierce CDV and W600 Brown.
I was fortunate to have picked up some incredibly difficult Pritchard stamps to join Chief Meyers, who was previously my lone example. Always looking to add more! :D https://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...0Pritchard.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...0Pritchard.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...0Pritchard.jpg |

GREAT pickups Leon.
I just picked this up from a 14 year-old?!?! A buddy on a Facebook group told me this was for sale and got me contact info. I sure hope he actually sends the card…. Pretty cool that a 14 year-old is selling cards like this (he also had an M131 Speaker and a T210 Stengel among other tough cards). |
Grandpa
Great pickups this month everybody...Ryan, that is crazy...someone's grandpa or great-grandpa left him some cool cards...Jerry

Definitely some awesome pick ups this month. Kind of hard to follow with your average, everyday cards. Here's an R315 yellow background of Klein, from the BST. I like the pose...

The Madness of Rare Backs

Huge gains in my quest for a 1916 back run. A couple are crossed over from PSA and a a few are reholdered, all 1/1 copies. My progress is shown at the bottom, 4 more to go...

Nice pickups with vibrant colors, Leon... Great back run, Greg... Awesome Speaker, Ryan!

Leon, I really like that Klein btw, and thanks Steve! GB |
Really cool seeing all these backs, thanks for sharing.

Super great back run, but it certainly needs a blank back example. Over half of my M101-4 and M101-5 cards are blank backed, and they feel a little sad their kind is not represented.

a little under-graded, in my view...
I've always wanted one with "most famous" photo middle... Also, only half of these out there compared with the Jennings plus Cobb version https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1703108683 |

A scarce card of a 1924 Senators player
3 Attachment(s)
At the beginning of December, I was in an unusual predicament. I hadn't yet spent my card budget for 2023! What to do? Well, I did something I don't recall ever doing before. I bid on and won a complete set of 27 cards, just to obtain one card for my 1924 Senators players collection. The auction was Huggins & Scott, the set is the 1945 Centennial Flour set of Seattle Rainiers players, and the card I so badly wanted is that of submarine pitcher Byron "By" Speece: https://bid.hugginsandscott.com/bids...?itemid=220526
1924 was Speece's only year with Washington. He appeared in 21 games, all but one in relief, with a 2-1 won-loss record and a 2.65 ERA. He appeared in one 1924 World Series game, pitched one inning and gave up one run. Speece pitched for Cleveland in 1925 and 1926 and for the Phillies in 1930. He was age 27 when he piched for the 1924 Senators and age 48 when he finished his career with Seattle in 1945. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=speece001byr What to do with the other 26 cards I don't want? Ideally, I will be able to sell them for much/most of what I paid for the set. If not, I'll keep them until age/health forces me to stop collecting. BTW, I am told that this same set was also issued with the cards having a blue tint. So, I'm still looking for a Byron Speece with the blue tint. Can anyone help? |
