I collect modern cards of vintage players

I collect a lot of different modern cards. I don't buy packs or boxes anymore though. I pretty much just collect Pirates focusing on 1st Bowman autographed prospects, complete Topps runs of series 1, 2, and updates all #'d gold parallels, and any vintage design like Heritage, Archives, Gypsy Queen, Allen&Ginger, etc.
I also collect all the Topps All-Star Rookie cards with the trophy icon on them. Yes, they still produce them. I pretty much have a complete run going back to 1960. I'll also pick up rookie cards of the players I really like. I normally get their first Topps card with the RC logo and again they will normally be #'d gold parallels. However, I have an addiction so I buy way more than just that. I pretty much buy anything I think looks cool. Even though I consider myself to be primarily a Pre-War Pirates Type Collector, my collection is probably 75% modern considering I collect Steelers and Penguins too as well as modern football RCs. |
The new high cost of vintage has driven me to some modern - where I can still actually buy and collect cards. I haven't sold any vintage except for a token few. I just keep 'em, cherish 'em, and be glad I acquired what I did when I did. I also have collected some Star Wars cards and some Pokemon cards when my kid was big into them.
Speaking of "vintage" - my sister claims vintage is up to 50 years old, and beyond that they are antiques. I now see people talk of vintage with 1980-2000 cards, kinda blows my mind. I considered vintage to be thru the 1970's. When we talk pre-war, are they vintage or are they now antiques ? |

Collecting modern Topps sets and then working my way backwards is what has brought me to vintage collecting as well. |
Pretty much my entire collection is post-2000. I quit collecting for a long time and got rid of everything. I then picked it up again in 2002/2003 - but switched from baseball to football. Collected for a couple years at that time and then dropped it again. Those cards I still have. I've dipped my toe into the waters again this year. Am a little dismayed by the extreme cost of unopened product but am still able to find things I want here and there.

I collect some modern because I still love to open packs, but it's probably the biggest "waste of money" part of my collecting habit. I do like to pick up auto cards of some favorite current players. Buying Tom Brady stuff in the early 2000's has certainly helped mitigate any modern losses.

If there is a box of cards at the register, I will pop for a few packs, but that is a rare day. I do collect the 2000 Fleer Greats of the Game Autograph cards subset. I am down to 2-3 cards to complete the set. For the sheer volume of hall of fame players that set is tough to beat. Just his past year, while looking for a certain player, I came across the Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts subset. I just like the look of the card and have picked up some of the cards.

To my way of thinking the question is too black and white.
I answered no to the poll because I do not specifically collect anything post 2000, but I do HAVE things from post 2000. I buy a box of packs every spring to reenact my youth (sans the gum, of course). |

I collect specific sets I like; usually those featuring old-timers because I've tuned out from the modern game entirely the last couple years. There are some really cool looking base that are basically worthless (a sweet spot if one is a collector and not an investor), and some of the specific sets I collect the inserts and auto's too. 2001 Fleer Greats of the Game is one of my favorite card sets of all time.

Yes for me, but for post-80s I just collect cards of players I like, not type cards, sets, etc. I don't tend to spend very much on modern either.

I started out in modern because it was the players I was watching. As my interests changed, I ended up getting rid of most of the modern stuff. I have a small minor league set from 2007 that I'm working on getting signed, and a handful of other TTM autographs that I obtained around 2006-2010, but on the whole very little post-2000. If I expand it to include the junk wax era, then there are a few more TTM autographs, but still a very small percentage of my collection overall.

Collect them, I'd deny that if accused. I occasionally buy a signed card of a player I like, or a group of cards of the Cardinals or of a team that's having a great year... I don't get them striving toward completion or monetary gain, I'll get a new card if I like it. Usually paying more than it's worth as I get it on eBay.

I am a little surprised, I didn't think as many members would collect the new cards. It is a little over half at the moment.

Out of thousands of cards, I have 14 cards from after 2000. I didn't set out to buy them...they were just stray cards in lots. So technically I have them, but I don't really want them.

.........No....I am completely disinterested in the "New " stuff. However display a 1978 "Trey Pack" unopened because it is wax and gum just because I have it! So...who is this A-Rod? I am certain that he is/was not a Cub or White Sox.

I agree with Exhibitman, if you don't want to rip packs or buy sets, go online to Topps and pick up some of the individual cards online. The Topps Living Set has some great artwork, and you only have to buy players you're interested in. Topps Now has cars commemorating achievements, some auto'd. Occasionally the set Throwback Thursday has some nice designs too. I never feel like I've wasted money on Topps online product like when I buy modern packs. And like other collectors, since I'm a Reds team collector, my collection wouldn't be complete without modern stars. I am shocked it is not much higher than around 50/50 for Yes. I would think most collectors would either still collect topps factory sets, update sets, their team, a favorite player or local minor league team sets.

Collecting modern seems to be like going to the beach to fill up a small fish bowl as a tidal wave comes crashing in.

I only collect modern Japanese baseball cards, but I assumed the poll meant American branded cards, so the answer is a definite no (collecting only vintage American cards).

The Modern Monster
2002 2003 topps 206
Topps released this set with a cardboard back and used colored ink that looked a little strange on the cardboard. However, with the constant tobacco styled re-releases from Topps with white backs the original cardboard backed card set has its unique place amongst Topps sets. The only complete set over the three series releases is the polar bear backs with approximately 1450 potential set. Bazooka was also released over the three series and is a skip numbered set with 45 subjects and a potential for 30 complete sets. Unique at the time was the use of game used material in the tobacco styled cards. They used different colored jersey swatches for the same image of some players. This created in my opinion some rare cards. The ebay data can be seen on net54 “2002 Topps 206 Odds and Oddities - Joey Votto". There are some real gems in the set with 3 Wagner bat cards from each release. Also Votto Uzit, Mauer Drum, and Cobb bat card. Throw in some unintentional blank backs and the set mirrors elements of the original. I have collected this set on and off for the last 20 years. The T206 and T205 buyback cards they included in both those releases are fantastic IMO. You can always find a few for sale on Ebay. Are there people that specifically collect these buybacks? The holder Topps came up with to put the original T206 and T205 cards in I always thought was ingenious. Nobody seems to ever remove the original buyback T-cards from those special holders either, at least not to my knowledge. And whenever you do see the buybacks up for sale via auction on Ebay, they always seem to go for more than the cards would sell for without the Topps holder. |

a couple Ohtani, Trout and Suzuki - and somehow I have become interested in Detroit's Miguel Cabrera - Other than that I'm pretty much Mid 50s and T206
